'Basketball on Bowman' event canceled

CLEMSON, S.C. – Basketball on Bowman, Clemson basketball’s preseason event initially scheduled for Friday, Oct. 29 on Bowman Field, has been canceled due to forecasted inclement weather potentially impacting setup and the event. The gathering was set to introduce both the men’s and women’s rosters a Read Update »

Not a good start for the Bball team.

First they lose a secret scrimmage to Vandy and now they have to cancel an intrasquad where they were guaranteed to have at least half of the team get a win.

Much worse, Littlejohn has been rented out so the team won't even be able to practice and get better to try to improve their results.

So they don't have access to Littlejohn? Hold it in Jervey?

Do it in Fike.

And let the student body pick a 5 person team to compete against Brownell's bunch. :)

I know Barnes's Slab Five would have been challenged in Fike back in the day.

This is so lame.

Can’t set up the court in the middle of the football indoor facility or anything?
Like, there are NO other options?

had a basketball practice facility built in his house, just to thumb his nose at Brad?

Can’t he throw Brad a bone just this once, and actually let him use the thing?

You bet. Fike is historic. Why doesn't Dandy Dan think of the obvious?

You would think the Athletic Department would have

Oct 27, 2021, 2:15 PM [ in reply to This is so lame. ]

taken inclement weather into consideration when they planned it to start with, but it's basketball, so they half-assed it as usual

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t mean this to bash Brad (Lord knows that happens enough) but…

1

Oct 27, 2021, 2:33 PM

I’ve worked with athletic departments before, and I can tell you a detail-oriented head coach is involved in some of the planning for an event like this. At least the “high level” stuff, such as “what do we do if it rains?”

So it’s not like Brad is getting totally screwed by a disappointing thing like this. He could’ve helped prevent it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How do we know he didn't raise concerns and was over-ruled?

Oct 27, 2021, 5:08 PM

It took him a decade to get a full size practice court, it's not like he can bark orders and have the Athletic Department ask how high

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You don’t have to believe me…

1

Oct 27, 2021, 8:26 PM

But I guarantee 100% Brad had the power to say “we’re not going to plan and promote this event if a raindrop in the forecast is gonna shut the whole thing down.”
If he doesn’t have that kind of authority over a relatively small event like this, then he has no balls and that’s another issue.

Getting a new facility built is a totally different deal. Not even comparable.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think we can both agree that you're just going to blame

Oct 28, 2021, 12:04 AM

Brad regardless, it will save a lot of time

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1

Oct 28, 2021, 7:05 AM

I’ve consistently made one single point, and it’s clearly a valid one. You just don’t like it.

You (and some others) WILL defend Brad “regardless”…and that is okay.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, what I don't understand is why you can't just admit it

Oct 28, 2021, 1:08 PM

and move on...Your original comment was a drive-by on Brad, I pointed out the possibility that he did exactly what you suggested , but was over-ruled, and then you blame Brad ANYWAY...Just come out and blame Brad from the start next time, why give the illusion that you're being fair about it? We both know where you're headed

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Again, you don’t have to like my point.

1

Oct 28, 2021, 1:17 PM

But it is a valid point backed by knowledge of how athletic departments operate.
Yes it’s just a fun little pre-season event. But what it uncovers is the bigger picture what we already kind of knew…
Coach Brownell is not a coach who pays attention to every detail of his program.
That is typically not a good thing, and may be a little glimpse into why he doesn’t win more.

Yes, that is a concern and a criticism of Brad.
But it is absolutely not a “drive by” unfounded bashing of him.

Understand now?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I get it, it's ALWAYS Brad's fault, it certainly can't EVER

Oct 28, 2021, 2:30 PM

be the Athletic Department's fault for ANY of this...If Brad was a better coach he would have stopped the rain...simple as that

A head coach who is detailed oriented with his program would have been involved enough with this event - or at least assigned one of his staff to work with the marketing and operations departments on the basic planning.

The very first obvious question asked is: “What happens if the weather is bad?”

Should not have been blindsided by something like this.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point...

Oct 27, 2021, 2:56 PM

Yout top Head Coaches at football schools work a lot with marketing to get fans and students involved. Examples are Oats at Alabama, Pearl at Auburn, Beard at Texas and and Barnrs at Tennessee. Brad doesn't do anything. He didn't even have his media day tip off event this year that he has had before. Something is missing...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good point...

Oct 27, 2021, 3:16 PM

Just conserving energy so they can kick butt when it counts. Genius imo. Plus, didn't want anyone to scout our team preseason. Hence, secret scrimmage.

Being serious, why would you schedule this when you didn't have plan B, or plan C. I plan on being there opening night. Hopefully we'll rock the house and pack littlejohn every night. Send a message that bball matters.

They should have divided the teams & let Brad coach one team & the Lady Tigers coach the other team.

At least it would be fun!

in your criticism of Coach Brownell.

You have zero evidence that he was allowed to be part of the planning for this event, yet you decided to criticize him anyway. Unbelievable.

I have plenty of evidence of how college athletics programs operate.

1

Oct 27, 2021, 3:37 PM

But I’ll keep it simple here for you:

Are you saying…

1. Brad did not know this event was happening at all?

or

2. Neither Brad nor any of his staff asked any of the event planners what would happen if inclement weather occurred?

Which is it?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can't be serious.

Oct 27, 2021, 4:05 PM

Of course Brad knew about the event, and of course the staff thought about the possibility of inclement weather.

Your portrayal of our basketball coaches as passive players who don't even know about a season tipoff event and don't concern themselves with details is unfair. You have zero basis for your characterization.

The most likely scenario, and one which a reasonable fan would default to, is that this event was scheduled at the direction of the athletic director with limited input from our coaching staff. The time and location of the event was dictated by the athletic department, in conjunction with the university, based on consideration of other events going on. The basketball coaches had little to no input on this.

A backup plan either wasn't considered or wasn't available. I'm confident our coaches would have preferred to have the event indoors to begin with, for exactly this reason. But they weren't given that option.

If you want to be mad at someone, take it up with the athletic department that scheduled the event, not the coaches who were told when and where it was happening.

The bottom line is that if Clemson's athletic department considered this event important, we would be having it, rain or shine. And if enough fans were expected to attend this event, it would be held in an arena (where schools that are passionate about basketball typically have these sorts of events).

Re: You can't be serious.

Oct 27, 2021, 4:50 PM

So you are implying then that the school and athletic department doesn't care what Brad has to say? Or DRad the AD doesn't communicate with his HC on matters and want his opinions? Regardless not a good look for the importance of basketball...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I'm saying that the planning of this event was done

Oct 28, 2021, 3:38 PM

at the athletic department level, in coordination with the university. Littlejohn already has an event scheduled this weekend, necessitating a setup that doesn't allow for the basketball event to occur there. That's why it was scheduled for Bowman instead.

I'm sure they involved Brad in the process on some level, and they might've asked for his preferences, but Brad wasn't allowed to decide when and where the event would be held.

I agree, it's not a good look for the importance of basketball at Clemson. That's exactly the problem I've been trying to highlight here for years.

If basketball were important enough at Clemson, this event would've been a priority and it would be happening, rain or shine.

It sounds more like this was done to benefit the FB program

Oct 28, 2021, 4:33 PM

in the first place and as usual, they didn't use their entire ### and when it looked like it wasn't going to be the Dog and Pony show they wanted to put on for the Football recruits, they simply pulled the plug

So, I guess you are taking option 2. (or an implied third option)

1

Oct 27, 2021, 4:57 PM [ in reply to You can't be serious. ]

The coaches knew the event would be canceled if inclement weather was in the forecast, and they went along with it.

So don’t act like they are being wronged.

As stated before, I have worked with head football and head basketball coaches at the collegiate level. The good ones are on top of EVERY detail of their program, including any event such as this one.
Those are facts.

Re: So, I guess you are taking option 2. (or an implied third option)

Oct 28, 2021, 8:38 AM

This.

This is one of the things I was referring to. You don't think Beard was serious when he wants the students to be the best in college basketball. You think Brad ever said that to the student body? Watch this:

https://mobile.twitter.com/TexasMBB/status/1453115973070843905

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well yes, of course the coaches went along with it.

Oct 28, 2021, 3:40 PM [ in reply to So, I guess you are taking option 2. (or an implied third option) ]

What do you want them to do, protest outside Jervey? Refuse to come to work until this event is scheduled when and where they want it?

At the end of the day, our coaches are still employees of the university and do what their athletic director and school president tell them to do. If you will recall, failing to understand that is what got Danny Ford fired.

Re: You can't be serious.

Oct 27, 2021, 7:58 PM [ in reply to You can't be serious. ]

Can't attest to what or how/who but I do know one thing that's a definite: the AD knew this was a huge weekend to show off Clemson, if for no other reason football. Big weekend for recruits. A lot, if not most of our FB recruits play and/or care about other sports.

Just a guess, but my opinion, that's one reason we had a bball event and baseball scrimmage, soccer etc. Sure those events are fall events usually played, but Dabo and staff targeted this weekend for recruits. True, FSU weekend is huge but Dabo is detailed oriented. Just a guess. Either way, bad on AD not having a plan B.
