Wide Right Sinks Defending Champs Tech in Death Valley, 9-7

Published: September 28, 1991

CLEMSON, S.C., Sept. 28— Ronald Williams, benched for the first quarter for skipping study hall during the week, scored the winning touchdown today as Clemson edged Georgia Tech, 9-7, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.

The Yellow Jackets, who had beaten Clemson the past two seasons, had a chance to win with eight seconds left, but Scott Sisson was wide to the right on a 44-yard field-goal attempt.

Williams, who fumbled twice before the go-ahead drive, gave the Tigers (3-0 over all, 1-0 in the conference) the lead when he scored from 2 yards out with 2 minutes 6 seconds left. The extra point was blocked.

Georgia Tech (2-2, 1-1) drove 51 yards to set up Sissons' attempt. Last week against Virginia, Sisson kicked a 33-yard field goal with no time left for a 24-21 victory.

Williams, a sophomore, led all rushers with 102 yards on 20 carries.

Entering the game, Clemson had the nation's No. 1 defense. The Tigers were allowing 94 yards a game and were second in scoring defense with 3.5 points. Georgia Tech, averaging 459 yards on offense, gained 282 yards against Clemson.

Jones was held to 159 yards passing, 42 below his average. Lincoln led the Yellow Jackets with 94 yards on the ground.

Best Is The Standard

Probably the best moment of the Hatfield era.

Great game to beat the defending national champions.

I was at this game. The stadium roared when Williams scored the TD.

Got real nervous when Sisson lined up for the game winning FG. The stadium roared again when he missed it.

Didn't watch the kick as Sisson was a very reliable kicker. This post might be the first time I've witnessed his missed kick.

I thought highly of Clemson before kick-off enough to believe we was going to win by 14 at the most.

It took all day to score on them it seemed like.
I'm like what is wrong with Clemson? What is going on with this offense???

Defense had to be needing so much I-V's during and after that game because they were constantly on the field.
