What am I missing with the Kellen Jones thing?

Jan 24, 2013, 5:21 PM

I know he transferred in from Oklahoma when Veneables came. But he was a 3* recruit and didn't see much time at Oklahoma.

Why do so many people expect him to compete for a starting spot right away? I know we've heard he's looked good in practice, but we've also heard that about Justin Parker and other guys.

Not doubting, just trying to get some perspective on this expectation.

My understanding is he has outperformed almost everyone since arriving.

Well if that's true, then awesome. Would be nice to have that kind of a bonus on defense going into next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a good point. There's no reason Jones can't compete

Jan 24, 2013, 5:28 PM

for PT if he keeps working at it. JP is another guy who could factor in.

I'm not the least bit worried about LB depth.

Don't know how much time he got in the freshman y r he was

Jan 24, 2013, 5:29 PM

There overall but he did see sig playing time in the fsu win in tally in a game I watched. Bv has already said he would have been a starter last yr if he was eligible. Is it possible he played more than we know? I was watching a replay of that game not long ago and he had some serious message type hits.

He had 10 tackles as a freshman at Oklahoma, including

special teams where he was a regular.

It's a story that has taken on a life of its own.

fans pretending to know more about the situation than they really do coupled with wishful thinking.

You're not missing a thing. It's based entirely on a few

comments from coaches as far as I can tell; that and "great things are just around the corner" optimsm that often comes with being a fan. Nothing really wrong with that, but fact is, nobody here has seen him play a single down as far as I know. ####, I hope he's the next Jeff Davis/Levon Krkland/Anthony Simmons all rolled into one, and he may be; but we'll have to wait and see,

Cool...just wanted to make sure something didn't happen, as I was away from the boards for a few days early in the year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just guessing here, but if he was all-world he probably

Jan 24, 2013, 5:42 PM [ in reply to You're not missing a thing. It's based entirely on a few ]

would not have left Oklahoma and been forced to sit out a year.

But, we shall see.

Nothing he did there would indicate that he was a great

Jan 24, 2013, 5:51 PM

LB. Just to be clear, I'm not saying he isn't or won't be; I'm just saying that other than a few complimentary words from the coaching staff, we have no indication one way or the other.

grin when talking about lateek arriving at the ball with authority? a lot of people took that as teek's coming out party.

all the best in the world to the young man, but he mostly cracked the gatorade, not the two deep, during his time here.

i also wish "we" could move away from the 3* thingy, but i get it.

Bringing up how many "stars" he is is a waste of time.

Jan 24, 2013, 6:02 PM

The entire world has been brainwashed by that gimmick.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree....the whole "stars" thing is foolish

Jan 24, 2013, 6:46 PM

once they set foot on campus. I think Jones is gonna be a stud

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree , once you're in school and on the field, ....

Jan 24, 2013, 7:48 PM [ in reply to Bringing up how many "stars" he is is a waste of time. ]

stars go out the window. Makes for interesting conversation and retro-analysis , but what matters now is how you stack up with the competition.

3 reasons:

Jan 24, 2013, 6:50 PM

1. People want to seem in the know

2. They assume practice play will translate

3. They don't want to consider that being the best LB on the team still may not be anything special.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know if he can play, but I know he can hit

Jan 24, 2013, 7:00 PM

I had the opportunity to attend a preseason scrimmage this summer/fall. I was casually watching from the west zone seats talking to someone while the team was practicing live kickoff returns/coverage. My attention was quickly brought back to the field when I heard a very loud and crisp crack of pads. It was Jones that delivered the hit. I am pretty sure he made several more solid shots during the scrimmage.

Some people have the gift for delivering a solid hit and it seems this young man has it. Here's hoping he decleats a few bulldogs in the opener.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2013 will be his 3rd year in Brent's system.

Jan 24, 2013, 7:11 PM

That's the one for sure edge Jones has over everyone else.
