Regarding the trick play....

Dec 2, 2013, 6:21 PM

....that play took me back the '97 CU-USuC game at W-B. As I recall in that game, USuC had a 14-6 lead midway through the 2nd half, driving the ball down our throats & deep in our territory. That's when they tried a double-reverse, fumbled, and we recovered. We then drove it right back down the field to score just before halftime to make it 14-13.

I was sitting right behind the USuC bench, and I remember Brad Scott ripping off his headphones and half-throwing them in disgust after the fumble. I thought you moron, what did you expect? All you had to do was keep running the ball & you probably go up 21-6 before halftime.... and keep Clemson on their heels.

Instead, the tide turned and the Tigers never looked back, winning 47-21. I recall Antwan Edwards, who had 2 interceptions in the game (one I think a pick-six), saying after the game "crazy plays like that never work against Clemson and never will."

My point is, a well-timed trick play can be a good thing to have in your playbook at a pivotal point in the game. But a play like Sammy's interception looked like it was planned to happen on the first drive with USuC expected to key on Sammy. Big risk with that play. Fail like ours did, and you've shown a hint of desperation to the opponent. Another example of coaches outthinking themselves instead of just plain ol' doing what works.

I wasn't surprised by all the mistakes we made later in the game. In my opinion, the trick play got the ball rolling in the wrong direction & we never recovered.

Nothing wrong with the play, poor execution.

Being an Armchair QB(like most us), I would have waited till later in the game for it. After running HR to death, they would have inched their safeties up and the play would have been a success. Hey, that's what Monday Morning QB's do.......

No,

I thought it was an asinine call when I watched it in real time. That was all Dabo attempting to prove something to Spurrier.

I'll preface my reply with this...

I like our staff and think that they will be fine. But that was a STUPID call considering the way we were moving the ball.

I agree that it may of not been the best time to do the trick play but the 2 punt return fumbles are what really broke our back. That and Tajh's fumble was at a very crucial spot in the game as we were heading down to tie the game back up. The Sammy Interception was just unfortunate and would have set the tone of the game but we had the momentum in the 3rd quarter. In the past years after that first Interception and them scoring we would have given up. There was not quit and if not for Tajh trying to press those late interceptions would not have happened.
