Regarding Inexperience on Offense

Jul 28, 2014, 4:20 PM

Started browsing through it by the numbers to see just what we have coming back. Thought I'd pass this along.

Cole Stoudt- I keep hearing the same as you, he hasn't played in any big games. I slightly agree but many folks forget hes appeared in the ACC Championship game and the Orange Bowl. Actually he's appeared in 22 games and logged 287 snaps. He is 86-119 passing with 8 TDs. He also has 29 carries for 107 yards and 2 TDs.

O Line- We'll miss two to start the year at ThUGA. But its not like we have a crew who has never seen action. Have a glance...

Ryan Norton- 1,118 snaps, 25 games, 13 starts
Kalon Davis- 715 snaps, 36 games, 8 starts
Isaiah Battle- 512 snaps, 15 games, 4 starts
Reid Webster- 217 snaps, 29 games.
***Also a three time ACC Academic Honor Roll Member
Eric Mac Lain- 178 snaps, 26 games
Jay Guillermo- 182 snaps, 8 games
Joe Gore- 124 snaps, 12 games

WRs- Probably most folks biggest concern. It was good to see Mike Williams turn it on towards the end of the year. But I think we're all optimistic that Kitt, Scott, Thompson, or Priester will step it up. Heres what we have...

Adam Humphries- 1,328 snaps, 40 games, 15 starts.
97 recs, 893 yds, 3 TDs
Charone Peake- 751 snaps, 29 games.
37 recs, 327 yds, 3 TDs
Mike Williams- 404 snaps, 13 games, 3 starts.
20 recs, 316 yds, 3 TDs
Sam Cooper- 752 snaps, 39 games, 6 starts, 3 TDs.
Stanton Seckinger- 482 snaps, 21 games, 10 starts.
25 recs, 279 yds, 5 TDs
Jordan Leggett- 166 snaps, 12 recs, 176 yds, 2 TDs

RBs- We certainly have plenty of options. Gallman looked good in the spring game. I think we all want to see Dye healthy and we're rooting for him. Plus we're all anxious to see what Choice looks like when he laces em up. Heres what we look like...

DJ Howard- 442 snaps, 36 games, 133 rushes, 581 yds.
Zac Brooks- 204 snaps, 18 games, 74 rushes, 365 yds, 2 TDs, with 9 receptions for 92 yds and a TD.
CJ Davidson- 36 rushes, 160 yds, 4 TDs.

Very good list. Too many think we're relying on freshmen

Jul 28, 2014, 4:38 PM

And while they will be looked to help contribute the starts on offense are guys that have plenty of field experience. I remember the dogs saying we'd miss Nuk, Ellington, and Ford and that they were 80% or more of our offense and yet we still torched them.

Let the dogs bark

Dawgs don't realize we're bringing back experience....

Jul 28, 2014, 5:01 PM

WRs- over 230 catches and 20 receiving TDs

OL- Over 3,000 snaps and 151 game appearances. This doesn't include Beasley and Anthony. Plus Battle started in the Orange Bowl and played every snap. Thats great game experience. Not to mention Norton started against the mutts last year and also played every down.

They're touting their D but they lost to Vanderbilt last year. And Florida ran 70 plays on them. Plus JHC is gone. And their depth took a hit when Taylor was asked to leave.

If you are going to bring up Vandy, it is only fair to note that Gurley, Marshall, Scott-Wesley, M. Mitchell, and Michael Bennett were all out for that game.

Regarding experience... I would be fearful of the lack of experience at QB, RB, and WR... if you had experience at QB, but not WR or RB then it isnt so bad. You can lean on the QB experience.

Or experience at RB and/or WR but a young QB, then again, not quite as much to overcome.

We are in the same boat with Mason at QB...but have a ton of experience at WR and RB returning and are at home.

Who would ya'll consider your go to WRs and RBs outside of Humphries?

Running backs....Zack Brooks and CJ Davidson probably did the most plays last year when McDowell wasn't in..Davidson played in the OB.

Also aiding Vandy were possibly two of the worst "Targeting" calls of the entire 2013 season. I think both extended Vandy drives that lead to scores. Just terrible officials. A Saturday night road game as well. Vandy was a decent team and would have won the ACC Coastal Division last year.

yes, and Georgia would win the ACC title even after losing to Clemson too, right? A mediocre team in the SEC is so good, they could beat anyone in the ACC, blah, blah, blah...

One of those targeting calls was really bad though. Pained me for the dawgs. Still shouldn't have lost that game with the talent disparity. You don't have any elite receivers on your team so that alone shouldn't have affected your offense that much. You still had senior QB Arron Murray and safety net in TE Lynch. If your defense was half as good as you say it will be then that loss is inexcusable.

Re: Dawgs don't realize we're bringing back experience....

Jul 30, 2014, 12:51 PM

Both calls were terrible and if you recall we had lost both starting RBs and our top 3 WRs by that game. Our rbs were two true freshmen.....throw in 3 TO's and a poor showing by our defense in the 4th qter and we were a whipped ###.

I agree the loss was inexusable. I honestly blame Bobo more than anything b/c we went into ultra conservative play calling when we got a small lead and let Vandy come back.

Without all the injuries we would have easily put them away and never gone conservative on offense.

The targeting calls were horrendous and made me lose faith in humanity that day. But agree...an inexusable loss.

Stoudt's appearances in those big games were

Jul 28, 2014, 4:56 PM

not close to being in crunch time. We were up 38-10 on Virginia Tech in the 4th quarter when he came in.

Not sure when he came in against West Virginia, but we were down 70-26 at one point.

Those games, and more importantly, those situations, are not instances when the pressure has been on.

Re: Stoudt's appearances in those big games were

Jul 28, 2014, 5:00 PM

I think that is beside the point... I kind of see where he is coming from...it doesn't matter to Stoudt he is making the most of the opp he gets and so what those are still very athletic teams and he is still making the reads and trying to make smart football plays against solid Ds...I mean just bc to us the game is out of reach doesn't mean that the guys on the field are not playing..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is truth to that assessment, but to say they are "big

games" when we're either up by 4 scores (and the other team knows the game is over) or when we're down by that many scores (when our team knows the game is over) is an exaggeration.

I didn't knock the stats he accumulated. But the original poster made it sound as if he had a huge impact in these games on the national stage when, in fact, he did not at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

nice compilation TigerBry! good information...

Jul 28, 2014, 5:03 PM [ in reply to Stoudt's appearances in those big games were ]

the numbers say we've got some experience & we've certainly spread the ball around on offense. crunch time or not, i think we'll be fine with who we have in place.

is Adam Humphries gonna have a great year? i'd love to see that, kid's a workhorse!

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you're right about Adam...

Jul 28, 2014, 7:00 PM

He could have a great year. I think we won't go as vertical in our passing game this season. Could be wrong. But I think he gets more thrown his way this year. I also think Williams is our next stud WR. But we'll see what our newbs can do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you're right about Adam...Great Blocker

Jul 30, 2014, 12:44 PM

Watkins should have given him more credit...

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not saying it was in crunch time but that experience is vital.

Jul 28, 2014, 5:23 PM [ in reply to Stoudt's appearances in those big games were ]

Good to get out there and play in front of a crowd and on primetime tv; even if the place was rather mute. Good to get out there and get the butterflies out of the way. Glad to see Cole execute. He's been in Chad's O for a while now. Its not as if he's a true freshman forced out there or trying to cram in the whole playbook. It also helps to have an experienced slot WR and some good check down TEs.

For these reasons and more, I feel Cole will do just fine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No doubt any experience is better than none.

Jul 30, 2014, 11:40 AM

But I just can't feel fine about it until I see him in crunch time. How will he respond when we're on the road and we fall behind by a score or two? Will he bounce back from a bad throw that results in an INT or will he let it carry over to the next series? Will he be able to scramble out of the pocket when it breaks down?

Again, not saying he won't be good, but I just haven't seen it yet. I also have concerns because it seemed to me to be a tight race this spring and the only reason he was announced as the starter when he was is because his chief competition was hurt and kicked off the team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly though, sometimes Tajh didn't do so hot in crunch

time. Not bashing him, just stating the obvious to make a point about this year. Odds are we don't miss a beat at the QB position.

first game. This is a redshirt senior that has gone through many game situations, hundreds of practices, NFL father who is coaching him 365 days a year so Stoudt might be considered a wee bit more experienced/ready than you care to admit.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cole's ability to handle the pressure is a least concern.

Jul 30, 2014, 1:23 PM [ in reply to Stoudt's appearances in those big games were ]

I'd say his plowing ahead on the ground for three yards and a first down might be an issue.
