Referring to Daniel Rodriguez as Lt Dan.

Sep 9, 2012, 12:00 PM

Most enlisted people don't like being called an officer. It sounds kind of ignorant for people to refer to him as Lt Dan

How about calling him by his actual title, Staff Sgt. Rodriguez? He deserves more respect than being referred to as a goofy movie character.

Seriously people !

I think it was just a nickname the coaches and team came up

Sep 9, 2012, 12:02 PM

with. But I'll call him whatever he wants to be called.

I think he was a Sergeant***

Pretty sure his teammates came up with the nickname.

I certainly don't think anyone means to be disrespectful.***

To you I guess it is since you've expressed that.

But it does not appear to bother Daniel (from what I can see from his interviews).

Try to look at it this way. For the Clemson players very few of them can probably grasp or understand what Daniel went through. They are/were probably even hesitant to talk to him about it. Maybe some of them who have family members in the military have some inkling of what he went through, but I suspect the majority do not. They are just kids and war is something they see in a movie. So, for them, maybe, calling him "Lt. Dan" is a way to relate to him since that is a movie that had war scenes in it and it had a main character who was referred to as "Lt. Dan" (and note that the "Lt. Dan" in "Forrest Gump" went through a catharsis to come to peace with himself and maybe that is what Daniel is doing too).

Heck, Dwayne called Tajh "Fat Boy" all last year. Were you condemning Dwayne for being mean to Tajh? Or did you think it was kind of funny and playful because Tajh was a bit heavy last year?

These are just kids trying to relate to each other. If Daniel didn't like it he would have probably asked his teammates to stop. But I suspect it made him feel accepted and a part of the team.

he was a sargeant. he prolly was a corporal as an enlisted soldier (an nco rank as an E-4 in a (usually) combat arms mos). he wouldn't want to be downgraded to a specialist the same as as he would resent being called an officer.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was given as a term of endearment...

Sep 9, 2012, 12:17 PM

with good intentions. It was a way to welcome him to the family.

We don't know how DR reacted to the name. Without that information we can't say that he was insulted. Being a Sgt is being a proud leader, leading fearlessly by example and not by word only and the backbone of any army. I doubt Daniel's teammates have any idea how important a Sgt's role is in peace time much less in combat.

The kids probably thought they were giving him a promotion or something. Maybe he'll speak about it someday and we can become informed.

I think the fact that he is already accepted as a leader on

this team speaks for itself. I imagine he likes having been given a nickname by his teammates. And I think the fact that he busted out laughing when Tajh told the trainer, during the Auburn game, that he had gotten hit in the cods, shows that he is pretty comfortable with the team.

And no one, NO ONE, in my forty years plus going to Clemson games in all sports , has EVER gotten a standing ovation merely for stepping on the field. NOT until yesterday. He should be proud of that too! Haven't met him yet, but I bet he was.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

What would be neat is if he joined the Corps of Cadets and made it official in a couple of years.

He was a Sgt in the Army and he got an football battle commission to Lt. for the Orange Army!

I've asked him about it and he laughed while shaking his head telling the story about his nickname along with Andrew Patton being General Patton and Andrew Maass being Randy Moss (he laughed about it too). I don't think he cares as long as he gets his education and gets to play football.

It's a sign of respect from his teammates and fans. He's retired from the military so what difference does it make as long as he's ok with it?
