Red Parker and a piece of Clemson Football History

Sep 22, 2013, 7:05 AM

“(USC coach) Jim Carlen threw for the end zone and I thought that wasn't necessary,” Parker said. “Jim and I were supposedly good friends. I told him afterward, 'Jim, you coach your team and I'll coach mine, but you'll pay for that.' ”

The next year Parker got to turn the tables on Carlen.

“I had Mike O'Cain, who Steve (Fuller) had beat out at quarterback, in there with the second team and I had him throw for the end zone at the end of the game, just to remind (Carlen) of what happened the year before. I wasn't doing it to be vindictive. I was just doing it to say now you know how it feels.”

The victory began a run of Clemson dominance in the series. The Tigers went 24-8-1 against USC from 1976 through 2008.

Parker doesn't get enough credit.

He recruited the players that Charlie Pell won with.

I believe if I remember correctly, that the score was 49-20, coots up, and we were playing our bench. Carlen brought in the first team with QB Jeff Grantz and scored. A true contrast to some of the games we haven been up big. I think of 1989 45-0, it could have been 70-0 if Danny had not called off the dogs, and Bowden was playing a lot of backups in the last of the 2003 63-17 game. He could have easily made it 70-17, coots had pretty much given up.

Great to heart that Red Parker is still coaching. I remember wishing he had gotten a little more of a chance at Clemson since he was bringing in great recruits. Guess it wasn't to be and Charley Pell did succeed with Parker's recruits before leaving for UF. Not sure how Clemson history would have been different because it was a Pell asst. coach by the name of Ford who took over from there.

BTW, I remember the battles against that dog Carlen and also seem to remember that 45-0 game. Hehheh.

If Charlie Pell had not undermined him the whole time

he would have been succeesful. But then as the dominos fell, we got Danny when Pell took of in the night for Florida.
