Recruiting This Week PT: 2

May 5, 2021, 12:08 AM

Well we are on to the second update this week which will include updates on some key prospects for the 22' and 23' classes, including visits. Let's get Started:

-Clemson's lone outstanding offer at wide receiver Brenen Thompson has scheduled an official visit to Alabama in November for the LSU game. Thompson should also take an official to Clemson some time in the Fall as well. His relationship with quarterback commit Cade Klubnik certainly helps the Tigers chances. Besides Bama watch Texas and OkSU.

-I said that Thompson was Clemson's lone offer at wide receiver but that could very well change in June. Two targets seemed to be poised in the best position to have an offer come their way from Clemson in 4*Antonio Williams and 4* Andre Greene. I have spoken about the in-state prospect Williams before and how he attended Clemson's Spring game. He plans on camping at Clemson on June 6. That would be when an offer would be distributed, if an offer is to occur. I have not touched as much Greene out of Virginia. The Tigers have had interest for a while, but recent domination at camps has even furthered that interest IMO. While a date has yet to be scheduled, as of now Greene has every intention of camping at Clemson in June. We will have to see if an offer emerges. Greene has visits to UNC and Georgia planned. I could see this lasting until the Fall, Clemson could land him if they want him IMO.

-Clemson offered former Michigan 4* DT commit Alex VanSumeren days after his decommitment. VanSumeren appears to be spending a weekend at Clemson this month. As such the dead period is still in affect and he would not be able to meet with coaches or anything of that nature. Remember that his brother transferred to Michigan State and Alabama is pushing here as well, which should show the quality of the player.

-4* Safety Sherrod Covil plans on attending Clemson in June, I have been told June 13-14 but nothing definitive. Clemson, USC, and Penn State seem to be competing here.

-Clemson will attract a 5* class of 23' athlete to camp on June 3rd in Treyaun Webb. Webb is a former Georgia commit and all the big boys, OSU, OU, and UGA, appear to be getting visits as well. A name to watch for sure.

-I stated a few weeks ago that FSU was the leader for in-state tight end prospect Jaleel Skinner. He will now visit them June 5-6. Clemson has Oscar Delp higher on the TE board, but it will be interesting to see how much Clemson pushes for Skinner.

-On the OL front Julian Armella remains the lone offer out. However, two committed prospects are worth remembering. First, Kiyaunta Goodwin committed to Kentucky last month, however the sentiment has been that Goodwin still wants to take official visits to his top 5. Second, LSU commit 5* Will Campbell. Campbell is in an in state guy and LSU gets who they want in state, but Clemson has had success flipping LSU commits in recent years and Clemson is interested, just something to watch.

-5* DE Enai White released a top 8 list tonight that included Clemson. He already has 4 officials planned in June to Florida, OSU, UGA, and Alabama. He said that if Clemson was offering officials in the Summer they would have definitely received on of those visits. He is saving that 5th official visit for later if he chooses to commit in the Fall, and that would give Clemson the last crack at him. I have painted this as a Bama/UGA battle based on what I have heard, despite some liking OSU. However, after talking with a few people Clemson is way more involved here than I originally thought. White is going to become a player to watch way more over the next few months.

-Some of you may have seen that Trevor Lawrence was the 1st pick in NFL draft and it turns out having the #1 overall pick can help recruiting. As such Clemson reached out to two 5* for the class of 23' in QBs Arch Manning and Malachi Nelson. I have already said that Clemson is team two for Nelson behind OU but they will get him as a visitor this June, and are involved heavily with Manning who also would like to camp in the Summer.

-Have a great week Tiger nation!!

Good information. Per Rivals, Nelson has canceled his CU visit and will be committing to OU so you were correct on us being #2. Our allure is getting them on campus and, if we don't do that, we seem to struggle to close the deal. Hopefully, Manning is serious about us, otherwise, we may need to branch out in our quest so that we aren't left playing bridesmaid. I think we have all seen and agree that to win at the highest level, a difference maker at QB is necessary.

Also, do you think our refusal to allow official visits in the summer, while all the other schools are doing this, may be holding us back?

Yeah Nelson has now backtracked from his interview just a week ago saying that he would be camping at Clemson. USC screwed this recruitment up and OU capitalized better than Clemson and just flat out beat them. Look for my next post we will talk about 2 5*, and a third player who could become a 5* at quarterback that Clemson is targeting.

That second question is hard to answer right now. I will say that other targets have scheduled visits to schools other than Clemson because they are getting the OVs that Clemson is not offering, such as Enai White. However, if Clemson is able to draw them to campus and convince them to take an OV in the Fall, then they get the last crack at them. So, ask me this at the end of the cycle and I should be able to answer it better.

So please forgive my ignorance here...Why in h3ll are we not offering OVs in the summer when all of the other big dogs are? Seems like recruiting suicide to me...Is it an ACC policy or something??

This is a Clemson policy not an ACC policy. Clemson has never offered officials in the Summer. However, I thought that they may have changed their position since these kids have not been able to visit schools for a year, but they did not. Like I said we will have to wait and see if it works, but it is defiantly a very big risk.

A major part of Clemson's policy on no summer official visits is how much our coaching staff thinks of Clemson's gameday environment.

Recruits can either come to be wined and dined on a 90 degree day in July with 17 people on campus, or coaches can convince them to come in for a game weekend with 100,000 people in town and all of Clemson's bells and whistles ringing loudly.

That fact that Clemson recruits on the total environment and not just empty promises of playing time and NIL benefits means getting the gameday visit is much more important.

I can't imagine Nelson's decision has anything to do with Clemson not offering a summer official. If that were the case then he would simply be taking Clemson off of the list instead of making the commitment to OU. He seems to have made his decision and feels there is no need to waste time with other visits and schools.

You are right not offering officials had nothing to with Nelson's decision because he is a Junior and would not have even been able to take a visit this Summer.

This is a great summary of our philosophy.

May 6, 2021, 11:31 AM [ in reply to Re: Recruiting This Week PT: 2 ]

We are targeting kids that want to be in it for the long haul, embrace the grind and be part of our culture.

Yes, we are going to have some transfers here and there because we are recruiting the best of the best now and kids may have opportunity elsewhere but, on the whole, we see a lot less than the National average.

Our philosophy is also why we rarely have decommits. We want kids that are locked in and will tell them to hold off on the commitment until they are 100% all in.

Yes, we will lose a guy here or there to the Georgias and LSUs of the world that are all sizzle but no steak, but if that kid just wants to listen to hype, maybe they weren’t a fit for us anyway. The only other programs I see us consistently losing recruiting battles to are Bama and OSU and I can totally understand if a kid thinks they are the best option for them. The track record of success and NFL talent speak for themselves. You just tip your cap and move on.

TLDR - Clemson recruiting is fine and we will get ours in the long run. We never sign the #1 overall class but are always up there in average rating and this year will be no different. Just let it play out and trust the coaches.

Could not agree more with a great post.

Clemson will not have a top 3 or maybe 5 class this year just because the volume that they are taking in.

However, their average player rating should be top 4 like it has been the past 3 years.

Looks like we just lost out on Ryan Turner, cb out of Florida that we were working. From what I've heard, it was down to us and OSU. Kid said it was a tough decision to decide between the two. Who knows, this one might be a possible flip depending on what happens through the year. Seems like so many of the cb recruiting battles are down to Clemson and OSU. Maybe that gives us an advantage now with Pride.

Mannings not playing in the ACC, he will pick between LSU and Ole Miss. He was interested in UGA till they signed back to back 5* QBs
His HS coach at Newman is a good friend of mind in NOLA.
