Recruiting ratings - not entirely logical

Dec 14, 2015, 7:51 PM

I've always said the whole high school recruiting rating system was more arbitrary than scientific. It's almost as bad as Heisman voting. One man's star is another man's dud.

But if you look at our 2016 class so far, here are results from 2 rating services:

By "star average"
Scout = 6
247 = 4

By overall magical mysterious rating using hocus-pocus (and class size)
Scout = 17
247 = 20

That's a HUGE drop just due to head count.

So if we only needed, say 10 players and we recruited ALL 5 and 4 star, we could still be pretty far down the list. Behind a team that has recruited 30 but mostly 3 star and a few 4 star. So they fill a BUNCH of position needs with a BUNCH of lesser players and get a BIG ratings boost.

It's almost illogical...

They count the first 18 or 20. ESPN goes by straight average.

The math still doesn't add up

unless every head less than 18 or 20 gets a "zero" or is normalized to 2.5 or something. Our average of 13 committed is still better than many who have yet to have more than 18 commit but who still have a higher total ranking.

The only rating that matters is the POR at the end.

We got that, don't sweat the details.

Rivals is the only site worth looking at for my money. I know they factor in team need in the recruiting rankings somehow. I wouldn't worry too much, I feel sure we will finish in the top 5 or 10 recruiting.
