Recruiting question/discussion. We are now at the

Feb 14, 2019, 6:24 PM

elite level where we are one of the few teams that recruit nationally. While I love the offers we are making to kids in California, what are the odds they will come? I think geographics is the biggest barrier, mainly their parents getting to see them play. So, that being said, if your son was a five star that had offers from all the major programs, and, you had no loyalty to any of the schools, what would you look at?

My thoughts (and this is ruling out any illegal school or alumni help):

Will I be able to attend his home games?
Coaching Staff. What are they like and how stable are they, especially the head coach.
Academics. Will they make sure he “earns” a college degree?
How good a team do they have now, and, the foreseeable future? I want my son to have the opportunity to have bowl experiences and have some nice rings to show his grandchildren.
A team that consists of players of character...no thugs no matter how good they are (hello Georgia, FSU, and Miami).

While I was writing this it dawned on me that there are few schools that can meet my criteria. Stanford and Clemson. I realize this throws out the “being able to attend his home games.”

Your thoughts?

Dabo has such a good reputation. Some parents just want to make sure their child is in good hands. Parents send their kids off to east coast schools all of the time. Most of friends where I grew up in California went away to Virginia, Duke, Brown, Columbia, Colgate, NYU, Wake Forest, and a few others. I went to Clemson being that I was the worst student of us all and Clemson wasn't as hard to get into back then. Even then I was put on the waiting list to get in. Also, Clemson is a safe place to send your kid compared to maybe the real USC.

I dont think a parent being able to attend games would be in my criteria. Would it be a perk absolutely. But if the best option for my kid is 3000 miles away im supporting it regardless. Not about the parent. If theyre the right parent

Most parents want college

Feb 14, 2019, 8:16 PM

To be personal as well as academic growth for their kid. It's a period of adjustment for parents, too, as the nest begins to empty.

I had to stay in SC and Clemson was far enough that being expected home regularly wasn't realistic. One of my sons went to Oregon, us being near Atlanta. He loved it...and we loved the growth of his independence. While my grades weren't always as stellar as they could/should have been, my dad reminded me that there was no one standing over me to do the work I did. He said it was academic and life education.

My sense is most parents recall their first taste of 'on our own' and wouldn't want to deny their children a similar opportunity. Plus, there's not such thing as a game that isn't televised/streamed. It's a much smaller world now.

I came down from Connecticut(about 800 miles away) back in the 60's.only went home for Christmas and summers.wouldn't trade the CU experience for anything.got a little homesick during the 1st semester, but after that I couldn't wait to get back to school.got a great education, made lifelong friends, and had a lot of fun as well.oh yeah.i also learned to grow up.those 4 years are a great opportunity for anyone.guess it all depends on the individual.would imagine that dabo is just the right person to be your child's life coach as well as a fb.

So you enjoyed No Air conditioned Johnstone hall, Classes 5 and half days a week, The Study Hall, Red carpet, The bum lines, panty raids, jumping in the Reflection Pond after pep rallies, Rat season, ROTC, Frank Howard, and Hardee's as the only fast food place in town. God, times were good back then!

I would also add in Texas. Could you imagine all of the door that would be opened if you play for Texas. Penn State is starting to turn heads again too.

My guess, for most parents how often you can see your kid, whether an athlete or not, would not be very important.

Most parents (at least most of the ones I know) would want their child to go where they can grow athletically, academically, continue to become a special person and contribute after college whether it was 30 minutes or 3000 miles away. Although, there are still some parent(s) that only want to push their children in athletics and don't care about the rest. Either way, for all of the parents, today there is the "transfer portal" if things don't work out.

So players coming from California or any other state is not a stretch any longer
