Brownell

Jan 19, 2020, 11:20 PM

Do you think brownell is safe for yet another year with the streak ending in Chapel Hill and the win over #3 duke regardless of how the season goes even if Clemson finishes with a losing record. Still a lot left in the season and he also won the international championship. Too early to talk about it.

He’s probably safe this year. But I hope they don’t up his buyout and extend his contract. If they have to extend it I hope it’s only a 2yr extension and leave buyout alone. But beating North Carolina and Duke enough to save his job one more year

Brownell is going nowhere. He is here as.long as he wants to stay. Clemson is not committed to BB, and coaches know that. so Brownell is about as good as we will get.

Recruits also know that. We have decades of proof.

Yeah, that more than $100 million dollars spent renovating Littlejohn twice in the last 20 years proves the lack of commitment.

Having a functional arena is a minimum requirement for a program and has nothing to do with investing in a top tier program.

Re: Brownell

Jan 20, 2020, 7:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Brownell ]

FYI, UVA invested $160 or $170 MILLION in 2006. We spent $77m a few years ago on Littlejohn.

They have literally out-paced our own spending by 2 or 3:1. Then they lucked out and grabbed a sweet-16 level coach from a program that was CUTTING program funding.

Clemson has both been historically and recently in the lower two-three schools in Basketball funding. Worse, many programs had full-time basketball coaches for 40-50 year before we FINALLY stopped using the basketball position as an additional revenue source for the assistant football coach.

That being said, I can't really fault our AD/Athletics Dept. The biggest "cheer" I have heard in littlejohn was for the FOOTBALL team. You can't win all sport, even the biggest schools (and Clemson is no where close to 31-0 sized) can't win in everything, let alone the tri-fecta... whichever that might be. UNC can't win in football, Texas can't win in basketball. UCLA does not win anymore and the coots never win.

The real reason why you can't win everything is because some plucky smaller school will go "all in" on one sport. Clemson in Football, Villanova in Basketball (or any Catholic school up north). And even
Coastal Carolina in Baseball.

So investing in one or a few sports can make a few schools a lot more competitive in specific areas. Not a bad tactic since going toe-for-toe against schools 2-4X our size, more TV, more fans, with far more $$$ to fight with is not going to net great results. I am fine supporting football the way we do. I still support basketball but live within reasonable expectations. This does not mean "settling" but realizing the mountain to climb is a lot higher. Look to return on investment (we are 14 of 15 in investments... but normally between #5 and #11 in the ACC most of the last few years). We have been getting better despite our ecosystem being a lot worse for non-elite P5 programs. Right now it is easier to win at VCU than at Clemson. Still, we are getting better, it is just the long route.

Clemson has shown an increased commitment to basketball

Jan 20, 2020, 3:56 PM [ in reply to Re: Brownell ]

these last few years.

Granted, this isn't what it could be, but it is at least enough to give him decent facilities to recruit to, and enough of a budget to assemble a reasonable staff of assistant coaches and support personnel.

It's clear that this investment has paid off. Brownell does more with less as well as any other coach I know. It's no surprise that since these investments, we've won 20 games in a row the last two years and have a very good recruiting class signed for this year.

Recruits can see that things have changed at Clemson when it comes to basketball. Brownell deserves more time IMO to show what he can do with a more level playing field (nowhere close to UNC and Duke, granted, but much closer to other programs in the middle of the pack of the ACC where he has us).

They'll give him another year just for that.

Jan 20, 2020, 12:15 AM

They've given another year for less.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It probably comes down to how the rest of the season goes.

Jan 20, 2020, 12:23 AM

If the team is consistently competitive then he’ll probably be back. If they absolutely tank then I’d say change is a possibility.

Re: Brownell

Jan 20, 2020, 6:19 AM

No, I don't. He caught the Tarheels in one of their weakest seasons ever and then coming off that emotional win beat Duke at home.
Then you lay another egg at State.
It's never too early to start talking about that now that you are in ACC play.No more OOC or international tournaments to factor in. He needs 20 wins just to get NCAA attention, so I think he has to have a winning record, or else those two wins won't amount to a "hill of beans" in my opinion.

Re: Brownell

Jan 20, 2020, 9:50 AM

Though rarely, UNC has been down in other years and we never beat them. I don't think that many people had high expectations for this year, and so it is foolish to talk about what needs to be done for the NCAA tournament in regards to being safe. This team has at the very least performed to expectations, and exceeded those of myself and many others. If things completely fall apart from here on out, maybe things change, but right now he is safe. He should stay that way if we even sniff the NIT, much less the NCAA's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We didn't lay an egg at NC State.

Jan 20, 2020, 3:58 PM [ in reply to Re: Brownell ]

We played hard and had a good game plan. We simply didn't hit shots.

We were actually in it until the end, against a team that is over .500 in the ACC, on their home court, DESPITE the fact that we had an uncharacteristically awful day shooting.

If we shot anywhere close to our season average on free throws or three pointers, we would've won that game. Hard to blame coaching on a bad shooting day. They happen.

Wow. Tigernet posters are very dumb.

Let's fire Brownell on a known down year with a ton of injuries when he actually has momentum for the first time. Here is why it would be incredibly dumb to fire him now:

- Had his two best recruiting classes back to back (I wonder if the facility upgrade helped)
- Our roster, albeit young and injured is the most talented roster since he has been at Clemson
- We actually have functional depth (first time in a long time)
- If everything goes as planned, we will have a VERY good team next year. When I say everything goes as
planned I mean Simms coming back, no significant injuries, and no transfers.

Seems to me doesn't matter how great these past couple recruiting classes are or will be, brad doesn't know how to coach good players imo. Seems now would be a better time to find the right guy that can make them better. That coach might not be out there but the ad should take a long look at who might be avaible or a up and coming coach. I hate seeing us shoot 3s and not seeing a single person crash the boards. They all start running back on defense as if we shoot 100 from the arc. Free throw shooting it atrocious amoung other things that brownell can't seem to figure out. His buyout is less than it was. Let's just give him 2 more years. No thank you.

Lots of wrong information in this post

- Brownell significantly improved our free throw shooting pretty much immediately. Not sure if you are just talking about 1 bad game?

- Brad doesn’t know how to coach good players? Hahaha. Pretty much every coach/analyst that speak of brad talks about how he’s such a good coach. Please provide an example of one of these good players that he wasn’t able to coach... I don’t think you get to the point of being a head coach in the ACC without being able to coach good players. This is one of the dumbest statements I’ve read on here about Brownell.

You gotta think...what coach would want to go to a school

Jan 20, 2020, 9:39 AM

that fires a guy after he makes that kinda history? We could get someone no doubt but it won't probably be a quality hire. WE need to just stay the course and hopefully Brad can get us back on track. Also PJ HAll is coming in next year and maybe he'll turn out to be a good player for us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He should be judged on the season as a whole

Jan 20, 2020, 3:52 PM

and not just a few games.

The win in Chapel Hill is a big deal, and beating Duke was excellent. But those performances shouldn't overshadow the rest of the season.

My guess is that Radakovich will consider the following:

-Overall performance (wins and losses, as well as effort and player conduct)
-Postseason tournament appearance
-Additional factors (injuries, suspensions, etc.)
-Trend over the course of the season (improvement, regression, etc.)
-Recruiting
-Academics (honor roll, graduation rate, etc.)
-Player conduct off the court (community involvement, behavior, etc.)
-Overall trend in the program/expectations moving forward

We have had significant injuries this year, which have to be considered when objectively evaluating the team's performance. Despite that, the team has continued playing hard, and even been able to rally and band together for some historic wins. That says a lot about our coaching staff.

Recruiting has improved. Brad now has the facilities and staff he needs to continue to recruit well, raise the talent level of the team, and win more games. We have some good talent coming back next year, and also some nice talent coming in. Morale should be high despite what most of us consider a rebuilding year this year.

You mention injuries and it seems like we have had issues in that respect for a few years now. Has it just been bad luck, is it anything we can do differently, or am I remembering incorrectly over the last few years?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rebuilding from what?

Jan 20, 2020, 4:24 PM [ in reply to He should be judged on the season as a whole ]

A team that severely under-performed. I could understand the rebuild talk if last year's team performed as expected and made the tourney. But last year was bad - return the top 3 players/scorers from a Sweet Sixteen team and get relegated to an NIT appearance their Senior year?

I'm willing to see how the rest of the year goes, but please stop with the low expectation, "rebuilding" talk. Brad brought that on himself in Year 10.
