Really have to give Mack Brown credit in his press conference

Dec 3, 2022, 7:33 AM

"One of the real issues we've got in college football is people that are tampering with guys on your team and paying them money to leave," Brown said. "It's an issue that needs to get stopped.

"I sat down and did lunch with one of our starters the other day, and I said, 'Are you getting calls?' He said, 'Coach, I've got 15 places I can go.' He said, 'I'm not going anywhere.' I said, 'Are they offering you money?' He said, 'Yes, 100 percent.'"

College football has always been crooked, but the current situation with free transfer/free agency and NIL money just amplifies the new landscape as a disruptive change.

The question nobody asked Mack Brown, unless I missed it was are you tampering with other players, and offering them money too? Presumably, everyone is going to have to do that to some degree, not just Mississippi and Southern California.

It really is the end of college football. The amount of money out there is so obscene that you feel like the bubble has to burst. Can you really pay hundreds of millions to make a certain bowl game? Sharp cliff approaching.

I would guess ZERO!

Yeah I think we’re safe. Probably same number as our coordinators actually.

No question about that****

We’d have to pay for some team to take him, same with our coordinators. All have seen what we’ve seen, even our secretaries agree.

NCAA needs to be replaced.

Dec 3, 2022, 7:45 AM

They are good for absolutely nothing and are ruining the game.

Dec 3, 2022, 8:07 AM

in the bugaboos called the Transfer Portal and NIL.

The one comment I recall they issued regarding the portal revision was, "We're trying to make it more student-athlete friendly." Hard not to regurgitate over that wimpy statement. For God's sake.

The NCAA hasn't been effective at anything for years. With college football being run like a business now, a new, much larger, and better-equipped organization needs to replace it.

I don't doubt this but why is it no one ever offers any specifics? Name the team(s), specific coaches, specific amounts. Call them out publicly. It does no one any good when all you ever hear it "they" are cheating.

Nick Saban did call out Jimbo.

I could be wrong but I thought Saban called out the NIL "collective" A&M had arranged. Buying recruits. I don't recall him making charges of contacting players on rosters with offers.

He may well be calling them out, behind closed doors, to the right people. Saying too much publicly could, I suppose, even get Mack Brown in (legal?) trouble.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m sure they will if there’s some law enforcement that

Dec 3, 2022, 8:21 AM [ in reply to Re: Really have to give Mack Brown credit in his press conference ]

Would be able to do anything about it. Right now all we have is the NCAA who is nothing more than a paper tiger. You start calling out names and you essentially start wrestling with a pig. You know how that turns out. The pig loves it and you get dirty!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty sure Jimbo and Lincoln Riley have been called out publicly

Dec 3, 2022, 2:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Really have to give Mack Brown credit in his press conference ]

But the NCAA is a feckless bloated bureaucrat organization run by a bunch of egg headed nimrods

The shame of it is that this could all have been avoided had

Dec 3, 2022, 8:09 AM

the NCAA shown a modicum of foresight but instead they were blinded by greed. 10 years ago had the NCAA started a fair profit sharing plan with all the athletes we probably wouldn't be where we are today.

If the NCAA had just taken up to 10% of the their annual football profits and split it evenly among all the athletes it would have probably kept this thing from getting to the wild west it has become. But no - the NCAA got greedy and wanted it all for themselves and their conference partners. Even as the warning signs started coming that athletes were, through legislation or the courts, going to end up getting paid the NCAA just ignored reality and did nothing.

It's amazing how all these "smart" people running the NCAA failed to get in front of this issue to where they could have established a really good compensation system that kept the playing field level and incentivized college graduation among the athletes.

I throw the NCAA in with Swofford--both ineffective and short-sighted.

Amen Tabby. Great post. NCAA and all those who’ve been running college football the past decade are at fault here. A greedy and arrogant lot. NCAA has been a zombie org for years and I’m not sure there are any adults in the room when it comes to college football decision making. If coaches, administrators, etc are frustrated by 18-22 year old kids will up and transfer for the promise of more money, look in the mirror and see what kind of example you’ve been putting up for years. Unfortunate the utter lack of any foresight and/or such extreme arrogance got us here. That said, I still watch the games. Not as much as I used to but as someone who grew up on college sports, they’re very hard to quit, even in their current form. And everyone from the NCAA on down to the players know that.

The NCAA and the PGA Tour have a good bit in common. They handled NIL and LIV golf poorly based on what appears to be greed. I mean the PGA tour suddenly finds Millions more for their tournaments and a huge payout for PIP (12 million for Tiger to play all of three tournaments)

The NCAA doesn't get any football profit, unless you want to count the FCS playoffs. The NCAA gets 0 TV money from FBS TV contracts. They get 0 money from the CFP. They get 0 money from bowls. They get 0 money from FBS ticket sales.

The NCAA has never had the power to do what you suggested. The downfall of the NCAA was the Supreme Court ruling in 1984 on the Georgia/Oklahoma lawsuit. That took any power they had.

You are correct about the 1984 lawsuit. Television money took control at that time and in retrospect it is amazing that things didn’t get out of control sooner.

I quit watching pro sports years ago. Now college football and basketball is worse. Mack Brown said the NFL has more ability to manage rosters now than colleges. I miss the “purity” of college sports. ( If it ever was pure). I played a no revenue sport in college. It was still pure and mostly still is.

How could you do away with the ncaa? Is that even possible?

I hate posts like this one where someone claims to have a source that gives information no one else has ...... but here goes.

From a very reputable source, DJ Lagway has already been offered a bundle to play for another university not named Clemson...... probably true. He likes Clemson, and they do not necessarily have to match that particular NIL deal, but will have to come up with something attractive ...... also probably true. My speculation is that we are not going to bend over backwards for anyone whose decision is based "entirely, or even predominantly" on NIL money. But then again it can't be entirely ignored.

Is there anyway we can give the death penalty to the NCAA? Or do we have to wait while they do it to themselves?
