Cooper River Bridge Race--

Apr 1, 2022, 6:12 PM

is tomorrow. How many are there? Post some photos.

This has long time been THE race of SC.
It is 6.2 miles and "tricky". Some flat, then the bridge hills, then the flat.

At one time had my treadmill programed to that course. Most folks kill themselves on the bridge and suffer in. The better deal is to hold position and haul a$s on the two miles after the bridge.

25000 show. To run for time you must be near the starting line which is a chore. You can't race friends here as too many folks. You run for time and then compare times later over beer.

Some excellent age group racers only race a couple time a year, so this is a chance at them.
The fun is mostly after the race as Charleston is over run with joggers seeking beer well past midnight. I always took lots of my home made beer to share.

My best time there was when I was 46 - about 35:45.

It’s a horrible “race” and not a good experience for anyone. It’s a heck of a lot more fun to do any local 5k and hit up the beer trucks after… CRBR is trash.

Steroids are wonderful… LBB is on a TRT dose. Don’t judge, let’s just have some fun!!!

Every time I see a picture like that, I wonder if the bridge

Apr 1, 2022, 8:12 PM

designers took an entire bridge full of wall to wall people, when the normal use is vehicles, into account when making weight calculations. Hopefully any newer bridge is overdesigned to the nth degree, to account for aging gracefully without danger of failing.

nope, no engineering here - just a few rednecks building a bridge.

In olden days we raced on the original bridge which was much steeper. I have done them all, no bridge was stressed even with my fat a ss on it.

in the low country. It was my first bridge run. I had a great stay in Mt Pleasant and was ready to tear it up the next morning. I set my alarm clock in the hotel to give myself plenty of time pre-race to carb up and stretch. When I woke up rested and ready, I realized I overslept and missed the whole race. The clock had a separate knob for the radio volume. Can you believe that? Why would the mfg have a separate knob for the radio volume????

No big deal, the deal is the all day after race party !

No doubt.

The foot race community definitely know how to party. I saw more old man-balls hanging out of short shorts than should be legal. Something about being bald too that makes older men forget to tuck their creepy balls into their wastelands.

I take on the flat start to the race with a modest 7-minute pace. Upon reaching the bridge incline, I propel myself forward in a series of rapid-fire quick-twitch broad jump style maneuvers. You are correct this is a tough stage of the race. Upon reaching the top of the incline, I level off into an extended gait and pick up the pace. Next reaching the decline, I rapidly accelerate into a full sprint running around bodies that seem almost stationary in my zen-like focus - I also scream like a wild jackal. Finally, I cross the finish line with whatever energy and sanity is left. Then a cold one.

Probably not the best technique for every one, but it's a vastly enjoyable race.

Wanted to do the last one over the old bridges

Apr 1, 2022, 10:42 PM

but got sick and couldn't make it. I did do the first one over the new bridge. I wore the singlet that Col Robbins used to wear at track practice. I graduated from N. Charleston High School but hadn't been back since 1965. I recognized a lot in downtown Charleston, but everything outside that and around Park Circle and the high school I didn't have a clue.

Don't expect to get back again as I live in Colorado and will be 80 this year. I will be doing a 5K with my grandson the end of May and after that I'm done running.

I ran in the first Reedy River Run (10K) in Greenville ........ a long time ago. I had trained for it, but mostly due to the time I had after work, I usually only ran about 3 miles a day. For the first half of the race I ran with a friend and we hit the half-way split at a tad over 19 minutes. The second half I ran in 24 minutes ....women passing me left and right. I think it might have rained, so I used that as an excuse.

When they ran it on the old Grace bridge

the steel structure’s roadway would “bounce” several inches. It was sufficient to make you stumble if you weren’t careful.
