Real football question for the football brains on here....

Sep 28, 2014, 5:29 PM

On punt returns, our line never blocks to slow their punt coverage, so our returner is always pressured on the catch. Other than a few going after the punter, the rest of our guys just run down the field with the punt coverage.

What's up with that? Is there some strategy I'm missing here?

I'm interested in this subject also. We desperately need an explosive punt returner with sure hands.

I agree but 99% of the time, when Humphries catches the punt, he is surrounded by enemy players.

AH is sure-handed but not explosive.

And he's usually signaling for a fair catch for the reason mentioned by the OP.

I'm glad we have AH. He must have ice in his veins to stand amongst the opposing teams players and catch the ball. Our punt blocking doesn't slow the other team down enough.

Danny Pearman is our special teams coach and all he runs is punt block even though our team never makes it close to a block. We need to run return coverage so we can at least catch the ball.

Sorry I missed this earlier. If I had to guess I would say it is a direct result of us being burned on several fakes over the past few years. We stay in "punt safe" half the time just to guard against fakes. To block for a return our guys have to turn their backs and run with coverage downfield. We obviously just think the reward isn't worth the risk. The goal is to simply ensure we get the ball.
