Dabo Swinney.
We all know that in a few years there will be two super-conferences and that they will be governed by something completely different from the NCAA. We don't know the details, but we do know the general framework. Two top conferences and everyone else being below them in status.
I just didn't think it would happen today. Until Texas was called the #3 team I had not even considered the possibility that the committee would, either on their own or from pressure (subtle or dynamic), would show the prefer those two conferences.
I was wrong.
Note: As hard as this may be for some of you to believe, I'm not that upset about it. It's football. I love college football. But, I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. The three guys I rode with on the way back home were irate and let it be known for a couple of hours after the announcement.
Me? I was disappointed. I think the committee showed tremendous bias in the decision. But, what the heck. FSU went 13-0. The defense played lights out last night. It was great fun to watch in person. As coaches say, "Control the controllables." FSU did. No point in arguing or debating or explaining whey the committee was wrong. Just accept it and move on.
It was a great year. Far exceeding expectations. I'm not gonna let a group of people in a room in Texas steal my joy.
It's just football.
Now, in a post I'll make in a separate thread, this makes things really precarious for FSU, Clemson and any other school that wants to get into one of the BIG TWO conferences. They have to be very careful.

Bret, not surprised that you have what I consider the right perspective on this. I don’t agree with the selection but I can rationalize it enough to accept it. I do think some of this perspective comes with age and experiences. I hate this for FSU and really hate the way it seems to have affected Jordan Travis for him to say he wishes he had been hurt earlier. But like you said at the end of the day it’s just football. Congratulations on a great year. I know it had to be fun for you, right up to today.

My perspective is based on two things, primarily.

Age, as you said, is one of them. As you get older you begin to change your perspective on what is really important in life.
But, for me, the other factor in my perspective is from the small amount of coaching I have done. Years ago I was an assistant coach in basketball for a JUCO team. (No big deal. Strictly volunteer on my part.) Then, years later, I was an assistant coach for a lower level HS football team. (Once again, no big deal. Strictly volunteer. I did it because I enjoyed it.)
I tend to look at things from two perspectives, fan and coach. Coaches have to be far more focused and far less emotional on certain things.
As Jim Valvano once said, "For two days before each game I try to convince my kids that this next game is the most important thing they will ever do in life. Then, right after the game I try to convince them it really wasn't that important at all."
In my younger days I probably would have been yelling and screaming and calling talk radio shows and ranting about how unjust and crooked the committee was and trying to figure out who had been bought off and writing letters to Mike Norvell telling him that they shouldn't go to the Orange Bowl and FSU should just drop the football program since they will never win another national championship.
Now, I look on the bright side. 13-0. All the great memories. A committee decision can't take that joy from me. I can only give it away if I choose to. I choose not to. The joy I had when Toafili had a 70 yard run, the joy I had when Bethune intercepted that pass, the joy I had when Fiske sacked the QB to seal the game, the joy I had walking out of that stadium and celebrating with the three guys that went to the game with me, are still mine.
We're not gonna win the national championship this year. So what? Only one team will. Does that mean the fans of all the other teams have to think their entire season was a failure? I choose to think FSU had a great season, far exceeding expectations.

Well said. I understand the argument for Bama, but disagreed with their inclusion. Defenders of the selections dont seem to grasp how this relegates Clemson/FSU to outsiders moving forward. The ACC, now by precedent, seems to have been relegated to no better than Group of 5 status. Congrats on the season Sir, FSU deserved better.

The sport has been declining at an accelerated rate the last few years. FSU was screwed, but it's just one example of a massively corrupt sport right now. In so many ways.

If you feel that way, I'm glad for you. The whole thing is shady. I don't like it, and will leave it at that.
