ZA Bit of Nostalga

May 29, 2021, 12:53 PM

Don't pass a car on curve or hill.
If cops don't get yo, morticians will !!!
Burma Shave

Ah !! Those Burma Shave signs on fence posts all over the country were clever and one of the best advertising gimmicks I've ever seen.

And who can ever forget the barns, usually the only barns that were painted, and a huge sign painted on the roof inviting all of us to "VISIT ROCK CITY". Farmers were happy to get their barns painted at no cost.

Do any of you remember the ad Spring Mills had that was advertising their sheets that caused a lot of interest? It showed a beautiful Indian maiden and over in a hammock was an Indian brave with the caption, "A buck well spent".

Up and down US 301 in South and North Carolina were the "Pedro Says......" signs.

Years ago there used to be a small grocery store on the North side of Aiken named "Hoggly-Woggly". I suppose they were in direct competition with "Piggly-Wiggly".

At a run-down honky tonk near Gainesville,FL, was a sign, "VALET PARKING NOT AVAILABLE".The sign was the only item that didn't look as though it was rescued from the garage dump.

I remember all those.
I am a product of Springs Mills. Col Springs loved his girl art. It was riskque in the day but top quality.

Oh yes, the Spring Maid magazine ads are still collectible today! Too politically incorrect for the woke generation. Can you imagine the firestorm they would cause today.

I've had a See Rock City birdhouse in my backyard for 20+ years.
I also remember staying at Springmaid Beach in Myrtle Beach when I was 15. They had little cinder block cabins, and none had air-conditioning. They even had their own pier. Those great signs were everywhere.
My 91 year old mom and dad still talk about the Hoggly Woggly. We lived in Aiken (College Acres off Whiskey Road) until I was 4.
