Unless Joe does a prisoner swap she will be in prison for at least 8 years.

In reality, what you're saying much more applies to the alcohol that you can readily buy at any any bar, grocery store, or convenience store, and alcohol kills people every day.

Do I like the country, NO, but I do like the fact that they enforce their laws, unlike the communist who are running our nation today, who believe that criminals should have more rights than victims. Oct 25, 2022, 10:19 AM

it before they will get it. All the people that i've met from foreign countries tell me how great it is here in the U.S. They are more proud to be here than half the spoiled brats that live here. And its b/c they've never been anywhere else. Bet Griner will hate Russia more than the U.s. after this is all over.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 25, 2022, 10:26 AM [ in reply to Re: Griner's conviction was upheld. ]

"I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season," Griner said. "I think we should take that much of a stand. I don't mean that in any disrespect to our country. My dad was in Vietnam and a law officer for 30 years. I wanted to be a cop before basketball. I do have pride for my country."

But hey you spin it however you want to. If you wanna believe she hates the US and side with the Russians carry on. That's something you get to do in a free country.

maybe loathe is a better term than hate

Oct 25, 2022, 11:13 AM [ in reply to This is what she said ]

forgive me for my choice of terminology.

The problem is that there is a undercurrent of ideology that wants to destabilize and poison the minds of young people and "easy to get at" people to grow contempt for the US. There are really only a handful of power brokers in the world that hate the West. And one in particular that runs alot of our communication platforms which can in turn sometimes steer our opinions through news and social media.

Our culture has become increasingly prone to take the bait bc we are lazy and always looking for someone to blame for our shortcomings. The hype behind the division that she promoted is one of those tools that I believe was and is designed to fracture our country in hopes that we turn on each other. I don't blame her alone. She fell for the bandwagon. But with her being a prominent figure and her aiding an abetting the nonsense, that divided so many, put her at odds with keeping out country safe and strong.

Through this dark time maybe this is a way that she can realize how great our country is. But its only great if we all quit being so gullible and easy to be deceived by those that wish us harm and stop voting in people that continue to parrot those talking points b/c they only do it for profit and gain.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: maybe loathe is a better term than hate

Oct 25, 2022, 11:23 AM

I think in part it's just an overreaction to the "USA! USA! America #1! Love it or leave it!" crowd that makes up a big chunk of previous generations and is just as obnoxious and ignorant in their own way. The US is a great country for sure, and a far better place to live than most of the rest of the world, but it's far from perfect and in a lot of ways we've fallen well behind the rest of the developed world (aka the countries we should actually be comparing ourselves to). I mean, we still don't have even universal healthcare in this country. We also have a habit of getting involved in other countries' problems and arguably making them worse. The Iraq invasion was obviously a huge and frankly criminal mistake. The pendulum does tend to swing a little too far at times, though, and social media nowadays is just a bunch of toxic echo chambers that turn previously normal people into radicalized nutjobs.

"There are really only a handful of power brokers in the world that hate the West. And one in particular that runs alot of our communication platforms which can in turn sometimes steer our opinions through news and social media."

What's that one in particular? Just curious

One of the most rational takes on this subject the board has ever seen.

Think about the progress that could have been made if we didn't spend so much time bickering over personal liberties like being gay, smoking weed, and women's reproductive rights.

Our founding fathers were so staunchly against religion & "the establishment" in politics that they would be disgusted with how we operate as an oligarchy today.

“Nothing is more dreaded than the National Government meddling with Religion.” - John Adams

“I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.” Thomas Jefferson

“[T]here remains in others a strong bias towards the old error, that without some sort of alliance or coalition between Government & Religion neither can be duly supported… the danger cannot be too carefully guarded against. - James Madison

The people who built this country were wholeheartedly against religion in govt. Many of them we against religion in general but that's not the point here.

Re: maybe loathe is a better term than hate

Oct 25, 2022, 12:18 PM [ in reply to Re: maybe loathe is a better term than hate ]

Stuff is nuanced.

One of the things that makes America, America is that we're allowed to protest what we don't like. I didn't like her anthem stance but Griner is definitely no Commie or America hater, she went to Russia to play basketball, plain and simple, because it paid. Some of the big clubs over there were basically showpieces for various oligarchs and shelled out big bucks in both basketball and soccer for International players...Griner signed a 3-year, $664,544 contract with the Phoenix Mercury but was getting more than a million a year to play in Russia. When you're 31, as she was, and nearing the end of your playing career, that matters. A lot.

And of course, her timing was absolutely wretched, and she ended up getting caught up in basically what amounts to a hostage situation when Russia invaded Ukraine. She's unfortunately being used as a pawn against the US; there's nothing remotely "just" about it.

I’m shocked, appalled, and distressed that so many on here are cheering this arrest. This is an American citizen who you cheer a 9 years in a Russian prison sentence for? For what? Not even the crime she was arrested for, but rather speaking her mind about what she perceives as injustice; for exercising her freedom of speech - a tentent of American freedom that I bet you claim to hold dear.

What has become of us? 9 years in prison as a political hostage and people cheer? Is this who we are? I hope not, but I’m not as optimistic about it as I used to be.

Oct 25, 2022, 2:15 PM

No they absolutely were not, as Stalin discovered the hard way after he and Stalin cut a deal to divide Poland between them in 1938...only to see Hitler turn on him and invade Russia. Calling the Nazis "Socialists" is the worst kind of tired revisionism. Hitler was distinctly not interested in turning the world into a giant classless worker's utopia, he was interested in obtaining living space for the Master Race...and ridding the world of people he considered genetically subhuman. Like the Slavs.

The Nazis called themselves "National Socialists" because it made the harsh medicine go down easier. It was just populist fake branding, fake socialism. Their government wasn't about the greater good or worker's utopianism at all, it was actually about the Big Lie and the direct manipulation of the masses.

We've fought plenty of wars over the years with socialist regimes. The Nazis weren't that. They were far-right-wingers, allied with the Fascists and Imperial Japanese...all birds of a feather.

If i tried to beat up Trenton Simpson the police would probably visit me in the ICU and charge me with assault. It doesn't matter that I have less than zero likelihood of successfully committing the crime what matters is that I tried.

if you tried to beat up Trento Simpson and failed you would be charged with assault but not attempted murder . Unless the prosecutor had some other agenda and wanted you thrown under the jail.

Why would you build a rocket in your bath tub?

Oct 25, 2022, 11:29 AM

You don't have a garage? Hey if you identify as an astronaut I'm not gonna fight you on it.

If I stated, or it was able to be proved, that I intended to kill someone; the yes I would be charged with attempted murder. Many of these defendants publicly stated that they were attempting to prevent the vote from being certified; that's sedition plain and simple.

Oct 25, 2022, 11:55 AM

that is supposedly the best thing to put on your tinder profile.

if those any of these defendants confess to sedition then they should be charged accordantly. The ones that broke in and vandalized the capitol building should also be charged accordingly. Pretty simple.

NO one should ever , remotely.... believe these people had any decimal of a chance of overturning the election.

Absolutely no reasonable person could have believed that they would be able to overthrow the government, but I'd argue many of those folks weren't reasonable. What they very nearly did do was to come into contact with elected members of congress. And it's not unreasonable to think that some of the crazies could have inflicted bodily harm on our elected representatives.

This is what happens when Americans travel abroad and do

Oct 25, 2022, 10:42 AM

something stupid in a foreign country. It's bad enough to break a "friendly" nation's laws but when a USA citizen does it in an adversarial country then the results are very predictable. Heck - a lot of times a US citizen doesn't even need to break an adversarial nation's laws to get in trouble - simply being there is enough.

I'm quite sure the Putin regime (and make no mistake - Russian courts are part of the regime) will get as much out of Griner's incarceration as they can. First - the Russian public's approval for slamming her in jail and then when Putin deems the time is right - a lopsided prisoner swap with the USA (a pothead basketball player for some number of trained Russian spies) or some other US concession.

But Griner can look on the positive side - after doing some jail time in Russia and she eventually makes it back to the USA I'm sure some book publisher will give her some cold hard cash to publish her "story"....

Russia doesn't care if you like their laws.

It's a crime in Russia.
She was in Russia.
She broke their law.
She admitted to it.
They in turn sentenced her according to the law that she admitted to breaking.

It doesn't matter if any of us think that "this should not be against the law".

She is in some deep doo-doo...and it's nobody's fault but hers.

Do I think she should serve 9 years ? It doesn't matter what I think...Russia doesn't care.

A good start would be to change the laws here so we don't look so hypocritical for calling Russia out for prosecuting someone for doing something that's illegal in the US, too. The main reason cannabis was even made illegal here was racism against Hispanic/black people.

Oct 25, 2022, 1:27 PM [ in reply to Re: Griner's conviction was upheld. ]

Yeah, no problem. I can provide plenty of evidence.

Harry J. Anslinger was the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, which was a predecessor agency of the current DEA. The FBN is credited for criminalizing drugs such as marijuana with the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Anslinger served as commissioner from 1930 to 1962.

Here are a few quotes from the man himself:

"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others."

"Marijuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men's shadows and look at a white woman twice."

"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."

"The primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races."

Thanks JD404 ..... very interesting and I was not aware of those racists comments by the guy in 1937. Of course, the laws have been revisited many times since then and know that penalties for crack cocaine were largely based on race issues and that has been in much more modern times, so I don't doubt that our federal government is capable of stupid stuff!

They keep saying unlawful detention in the press yet she admits guilt and broke the law. Maybe it’s a harsh sentence but it’s with in the laws. She was anti police anti- white , anti- American wouldn’t stand for the anthem. So I guess this is justice at its finest . If we had a president or government with half a brain we would have negotiated her a lesser sentence instead of insulting their legality in saying completely let her off.

I do not like her. I think she is anti-USA. Her actions and statements, in my mind, were despicable. Saying all that, my feelings towards her should not intervene justice. Feelings should have no bearing on what is just. Receiving nine years for a marijuana substance is truly ridiculous. There is no justice in that. I would hate to know the next time justice is perverted, it would be against me. No one, left, middle, or right, should take pleasure in this woman's verdict.
