Active Duty vs. the Guard controversy:

Oct 26, 2016, 12:51 PM

I served on active duty in the USAF, 1982-1986, and wasn't some pantywaste Guard member.

It was really hard duty, serving in Bitburg Germany protecting Germans from an onslaught from the East while working in the base personnel office. Bitburg was a unique little town, centrally located, about 4 hours drive from Paris, about fours hours from Amsterdam, that had it's own brewery. The beer was so fresh that you could peel the label off the bottle to see when it was brewed and it was always less than two months old. The head on the draft was like cream.

I also played on the base basketball team, and we would travel around during season playing other bases in Europe. I was one of two white guys on the team, and most European girls just loved our black players. We used to get their castoffs which wasn't bad at all either.

I remember going to Vienna during Christmas of 1983. I was accompanied by my Charleston and Clemson home boy, who was teaching in Bonn at the time, and his crazy #### Coot of a twin brother. We stayed in a youth hostel there that turned out to be quite the hippy/chick scene. The crazy #### Coot twin got so much action from ugly chicks that we made him get a separate room. We also met a Lebanese guy who lived in Vienna, who obtained for us mucho illegal substances. Weird, the guy's name was Muhammed Ali, which we thought was pretty funny. He was born before Cassius Clay changed his name, so we joked with him that he was the original.

So, back to my original point. I don't think any pantywaste guard member could have ever stood up against Communism in West Germany the way I did. It was a helluva sacrifice on my part, but someone had to do it.

I retired from the Air Force (GA ANG) in '13, but I subscribe to the theory that everyone in uniform is a recruiter.

The US Army; Clemson; the USAF; and the GA (Air) National Guard are the reason I am who and where I am today, so if you or anyone want to discuss membership or a career, I will be glad to oblige.

I am not a smart guy, nor do I have 'all the answers', but I DO know a lot of people who are/do.

Actually, I have family who has served in every branch of service except Coast Guard. My Dad went from USAF to USMC to USN where he retired as a Corpsman, having served with the Marines in Vietnam.

What's really fun for me is that my son, a 15 year veteran now, has just started his duty as a recruiter for the USAF here in Florida! I give him some junk but it is all in fun...in fact, I was glad when he went USAF.

TU'd back at you!

Pass my thanks on to your son for his service. The GWOT/OCO generation of service members have had it as bad as any generation, they have my utmost respect, admiration and gratitude.

As for covering all the services, my older brother was a Coastie, AND my dad was in the Merchant Marines at the end of WWII, before joining the Army prior to Korea. Between us, I think we're all over it!

Can't think of a better way to have lived my life.

I was active Navy for 3 yrs....1981-1984

Oct 27, 2016, 10:40 AM

I knew the hash and prositute prices throughout the Mediterranean.
I passed out in the GTMO minefield.
I got arrested in the Port Authority bus terminal.
I had my pocket picked by a 6 yr old Spanish girl.
I went in as E-3, was discharged as E-2.

I also got to see the battleships USS New Jersey & USS Iowa in action off Lebanon.
I helmed my ship through the Suez Canal & the Dardanelles.
I survived the 'Crossing the Line' hazing, and now proudly call myself a Shellback.
I got to see many places in the world (like Diego Garcia, Karachi) that I will certainly never get to see again in my life, and others (the Balearic Is., Athens, Istanbul, Naples, Rome, Sicily, the French Riviera, the Costa del Sol, Djibouti) that I'd love to return to, but will never be able to afford seeing all of them again.

And, as a deckape, I worked my ### off, did rotating watches, and rarely slept.
Joe & I saved the world from the menace of global communism.
You're welcome.

Torremolinos. You could live like a king there for $15 a day back in the 80's.

Ran into a lot of American expats in the Costa Del Sol

Oct 27, 2016, 11:23 AM

some ran the local bars, and were quite happy to see an American ship come in. The Cote d'Azur (French Riviera) was way more scenic, but the $ didn't go as far, and the locals not quite as friendly. Athens was awesome....we were there for 3 weeks while the ship was refitted. I got attacked by the Ouzo monster every night, and the Greeks all seemed to know English, and wanted to argue American politics.

A sad end for 3rdG's Navy vessel.

Oct 27, 2016, 1:50 PM [ in reply to I was active Navy for 3 yrs....1981-1984 ]

Remaining in reserve for 2 years as she was stripped of parts and electronics to support her active sisterships, the Butte was finally declared surplus to the needs of the US Navy in 2006 and selected as a target ship for Fleet Exercises.

The Butte was towed from Philadelphia to this location where she took a 3 day beating involving sea launched Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Tomahawk cruise missiles and finally a single MK-48 torpedo from the USS San Juan (SSN-751). The torpedo spelled the end for the Butte, breaking her back and causing her to break in two before sinking at this location in 2,020 fathoms.

Man, how I love that sh...stuff!

Any video?

If I can only find the one from the opening night of Desert Storm - of the Infra Red TV view/video from a Guided Bomb about to take out an Iraqi early warning radar site. About 12 sec prior to impact, you could see this figure bolt out the back door of the control van as the realization of exactly what that 'blip' on his radar screen actually meant...

...gee how I miss my old job building bombs for a better tomorrow.

Re: Active Duty vs. the Guard controversy:

I Was never given the chance. I know I shot 39 out of 40 and maxed out my PT test. I know I'm more alert and pay more attention to detail than others.

The people I went through basic with, some were active duty, some were gaurd.

Let's just say I'm glad real rounds wernt in the guns when we did field excerxises. I know I would of been hit.

I'm sure some guardsmen has given his life for the country.

People switch back and forth between active duty and gaurd all the time.

I hope this was a joke
