Your honest opinion requested about CBB

Feb 24, 2022, 2:47 PM

Our Tigers must win out to avoid having a losing regular season record. It’s doable considering the teams we face, but we’ve all learned to not count on those “sure victories”.
1). Will a losing record be enough to terminate CBB’s contract?
2). Can his job be saved if he wins out and perhaps gets a win in the ACC tournament?

I think:
-he’s gone if losing record.
-likely retained if #2 occurs

I think he is back regardless unless they lose all of them before ACCT, which I don't see happening. He could also be gone if he has another Brownell moment in a loss. You know a time out with no timeouts left, 6 men on the court, wrong substitution late, ect.

I hate to say it but all comes down to Neff has just been hired on the job.

I think there is enough in place to bring him back, and Clemson Athletic support is not that big except for Football to make it happen.

Sometimes I wish Clemson was in the SEC because they will let coaches go with the same results.

Coach is very well liked by all of those within the athletic department and his job is NOT in jeopardy. Why can you experts not understand this?????? He will coach Clemson next year and will have a good season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes and its that he is so well liked and respected...

Feb 24, 2022, 3:17 PM

is exactly what helps him retain his job. The fact remains the Clemson fanbase does not care enough about mens basketball and really neither does the athletics department. MBB isnt held to a very high standard and with football succeeding at a high level and tv contracts increasing, basketball just doesn't matter as much to the bottom line.

Until the man in charge (now Neff) really demands the success or at least an upward trajectory, Brownell is safe.

I’m with you until the good season. Why do you think next

Year will be a good season. Maybe I should ask what do you consider a good season? Cause this ain’t it.

He must be your brother. He has been a bit of a failure. 3 out of 12 and you think we should give him an extension and a raise. The program is lower than a snakes belly. You saw the lack of support in the last game. Geez

Neff has been sitting at Clemson for 8 years. Don’t tell me he does not know what is going on. If he is any good like Dabo he has known his next moves along time.

Most of you that has been on Tiger Net since I become a member in 2007, you know that I have never been one to say fire a coach, and I even hate it when others talk about firing a coach that hasn't had the time to turn one of any of Tiger sports. I had been solid behind Brownell for 9 long years, and saying every year that I believed that Brownell would turn our basketball program around bc I believed that he could.

But these last couple of seasons has been all the pain that Tiger Nation should have to live through with Brad Brownell as HC. He is making more money than any Basketball HC has ever been paid at Clemson, and our BB program really isn't no better than it was when he was hired with the hopes of him turning our Basketball program around, and he hasn't done that!!

He ask for better facilities for recruiting, he got it. Like every HC, they want more money, he got it to the tune of being the highest ever paid Clemson Basketball HC. He has recruited better since Littlejohn was overhauled, he's had a better Basketball arena, more money, and better recruiting, and our Basketball winning percentage is no better than it was when he was hire almost 12 years ago. T-Netters, and Tiger nation, it's time for a change before Littlejohn starts to look run down again, and another HC says he can't recruit bc of the condition of Littlejohn!!!!

Re: Your honest opinion requested about CBB

Previous Clemson coaches didn't compete in the expanded ACC. FSU has also a much better program than in the past and Clemson plays them twice a year every year.

Brownell has a good record against other P5 universities in our region and conference with the exception of UVA, UNC, Duke, UVA, and probably Louisville and ND. He's won 3 out of the last 5 with UNC.

People who complain about Brownell never explain why another coach will recruit much better than Brownell or why Clemson should be as successful in basketball as football. Clemson has natural advantages in football recruiting and basketball isn't comparable to football. Talent is more spread out in basketball and there are more competitive programs.

If Dabo went up against the football version of ACC basketball, he wouldn't be winning national titles.

I think the decision has already been made one way or another. The only thing that can change it at this point is either something embarrassing or something spectacular.

I agree. Brad has seemed a little more relaxed the last week or so with the media. Maybe showed how the team played well last night. It might be the stress has already been released on what is going to happen most likely.

Clemson administrators have accepted the decreased basketball attendance and revenue streams. Clemson Football is paying the bills for Clemson athletics and most universities in the ACC.

You kind of hit a valid point. Our AD knows to improve the basketball program would require millions of $$$ from player facilities to increased coaches salary to more staff. They know that revenue will not increase significantly with the increased spending plus there is no guarantee of success.

We have a decent program which stays out of trouble and wins more than it loses plus graduates players.

Re: Your honest opinion requested about CBB

He should be gone regardless if we lose or win the rest. This is what has been going on for many years. You can’t retain or fire a coach on the last few games. His body of work over 12 years is very poor. Who could not have gotten us in the tournament at least 3 times in a 12 year period. Tim Bourret could have done that from his announcers sideline. Let him go. you saw how many were at last game. Most of them was probably their first game ever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have said it before and I will say it again...

Feb 24, 2022, 3:49 PM

three NCAA Tournament appearances in eleven years (one of which was with OP's players) and four years of no tournament appearances at all, is unacceptable by any and every measurable standard.

Frankly I though he should have been fired after the 2014/15 season.

My opinion

Feb 24, 2022, 3:58 PM

I agree with you - he's gone if we have a losing record. He's done all he can do here, and there is no reason to continue another season down this same path. The powers that be have proven, however, that basketball is not important, and mediocrity is perfectly acceptable, so some late season heroics could save his job. Otherwise, in the face of growing discontent among the fanbase, I think a losing record in year 12 would be enough to force even the complacent, "basketball doesn't matter" powers that be at Clemson into finally making a change. As for Brownell, he's a pretty good coach, but not a good enough recruiter to bring in the kind of players needed to compete successfuly against our schedule. We will always be mid-pack with Brownell. I think he's a great guy with high integrity, and that does go a long way. I thank him for his time here, but he is inextricably tied to the mediocrity that has been the hallmark of his 12 years at Clemson; it is the singular defining characteristic, not of his character as a man, perhaps, but of his record as a coach at Clemson, and there's no way around it. The longer he's here, the more unavoidable it becomes, and the more inevitable the decision to move in a different direction becomes.

Nice guy. Runs a clean program. Graduates players. I am and could do that. Absolutely cannot recruit nor coach at a sustained above average level. It's past time to get a new basketball coach. However, for the reasons mentioned (increased costs of a really good coach, Neff a first-year AD, and the fact that most of the fan/alumni base doesn't care), sadly, Brownell will be back next year. I don't plan to ever attend another Clemson basketball game except when the Tigers play in Columbia (and maybe not then).

I agree that 4 more wins will likely save his job. That can come by winning 4 in a row, or dropping one more during the regular season and winning 2 in the tournament. That would give him a 0.500 record, and that coupled with a NCAA tourney game last year will probably be enough.

A losing record, and he might well be shown the door. Fan discontent seems to finally getting loud, and that has to count for something before too long.

He is a good coach at a football school with little basketball history. Unless someone puts big, big bucks into a basketball NIL, I am not sure if anyone can do better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course someone could do better

And when did FSU become a basketball school? Or Auburn ( from the SEC)!Where is their history?
And the last time I remember Ga. Tech being good was when Bobby Cremins was around?
And I don't think you need to put big bucks into a basketball NIL ,at least not until you make a little history other than finishing last in the ACC or taking an early exit from the NIT.
Also, instead of going after big name coaches, which you probably won't get, or guys with no real regional connections( both Purnell and Brownell are from the north)I have said I think we need to look closely at Greg Buckner.
Maybe he can't do better ,but do you have someone in mind that can?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Your honest opinion requested about CBB

Feb 25, 2022, 6:18 AM

My honest assessment is the program has reached that point where you either continue on the path you have been on for 12 years, or you change directions
I am for continuing on the same path but only because I would have to remove my Brad Brownell Bobble Head figure from my bookcase if we change direction.
All kidding aside, I think it is time for a change, especially if we are one and one in any post season play. We are already assured of a losing record in conference even if we end up with an overall winning record.
But if we do part company who do we get to replace Brad.
I have said on more than one occasion that getting a big name coach would probably be very hard to do. But I don't necessarily want a big name coach. I do want a coach with ties to the region ,but more importantly the University, and who is familiar with recruiting local basketball talent, not athletes who can run up and down the court, but can't seem to play defense(just my take).
I have said all along I would love to go after Greg Buckner if he is available and if he wants the challenge.
Beyond that I have no other opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is the rare contract / hot seat year where his team has

Feb 25, 2022, 6:14 PM

not turned it on... yet. So I'm sticking with my guess of a fair enough regular season finish then like 3 in a row in the ACC tourney. Make some noise and get some coverage. Since we'd need 5 games to win it all because of so many earlier losses, hard to imagine we'd have that kind of stamina to pull that off, but it will represent Brad's best performance so... Year 13.
