Why did LB designations change to MIKE, WILL, etc.?!?

Jul 24, 2013, 11:52 PM

I remember when they were MLB, ILB, and OLB. I used to think that the change was due to the preference of our defensive coordinator at the time (I believe it was Kevin Steele) but it seems to be the norm now.

So what gives? Why did this happen? Did I miss that day in school or something?

I think it may be used for easier reference to LBs

Jul 25, 2013, 12:08 AM

by just dubbing the weakside Will, middle Mike/Mack, and strongside Sam.

You obviously never played football….

mike and will are terms coaches have used for a long time for the MLB and Weakside Linebacker positions.

when teams ran the t or wing-t when I was at Clemson it was just middle and outside linebackers like left and right halfbacks.

As teams went to spread, slot , etc with only one tight end, it became strong-side (where tight end was) and weak-side(split end side)

The terms used today are just shortcuts. Sam lines up on side with Tight end. Usually best run support. Will is side opposite tight end (weak-side) and usually better pass protector. Mike is still the middle linebacker and is the super stud of the 3.

Never is a long time - I played in the 60's - smartass!***

I was just referencing the sam=strong, will=weak, and mike=middle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it is kind of dumb - is "Will" easier to say than "weak"?

Jul 25, 2013, 8:25 AM

"Sam" easier than "strong"? Is "Middle" really that tough to say? It's not like these are secret code names any more, like they once were, that will confuse the offense on a blitz call.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's just one of those things now that has stuck.

People use to think Grandma cut the Turkey in half prior to cooking it on Thanksgiving and that was the secret to her successful recipe...only to find out she had a really small oven and had no choice yet people still do it.

It's just terminology....

Jul 25, 2013, 8:39 AM [ in reply to it is kind of dumb - is "Will" easier to say than "weak"? ]

similar to the "Bandit", Nickle Back", "Spur", or "Rover" which are all safety/linebacker hybrid positions.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Re: It's just terminology....

Jul 25, 2013, 9:12 AM

Yep, exactly, like when John Johnson played the Bandit or Rover position back in the day. That is what the terms were on Dannys team back then

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What difference does it make whether he played or not?

Jul 25, 2013, 9:18 AM [ in reply to You obviously never played football…. ]

Chiding someone for supposedly "never playing the game" is a bit obnoxious.

And as others have pointed out, the term "a long time" is extremely relative.

For some it has been "a long time" since Clemson won a national title. For others, it seems like yesterday.

There actually was football being played, by good football players, way before many on here were even born.
