Meh…..rather play southern programs….way better football and they are region rivals….especially in recruiting. Sec is the only move that makes any sense. We’d be blowing money flying to every away game

Think about all the expense just for traveling with a Big 10 schedule!!! It would cause our team to see less & less fans at our away games!!! Give our travel fans in the stands, and our Tiger teams the SEC if a conference change has to happen!!!!

Jul 4, 2022, 12:44 PM

If there is even the slightest chance that this is true, it's 100% in our best to see this happen. Before the USC/UCLA news, I really hoped that the ACC would make waves with a future Notre Dame deal and big plays for some combination of Cincinnati, Penn St., UCF, and possibly Navy and Oklahoma St. But now, the writing is on the wall. The B1G won't stop with the 2 left-coast teams and the SEC won't take a back seat to anyone. A jump to the SEC makes way more sense than an invitation to the B1G so the choice is pretty much go now (or soon anyway) or drown with a sinking ACC.

Left out Oregon as a team that’s made the playoff and not in B1G or SEC

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We can't, but I like the idea

Jul 4, 2022, 1:50 PM

First, HOW could they pay for this move? I mean, I get the suggestion of spreading it out over years, but the money to do so right now or even in 2025 (when the CFP contract changes) is simply too vast to be a realistic choice, so it seems like a non-issue.

Meanwhile, I certainly do like the opportunity to play better football teams, so I'm sincerely curious. Playing Alabama every season would be awesome, IMO.

Jul 4, 2022, 2:18 PM

I don’t know why folks think that once the ACC implodes (which it is… just a matter of time) that the GOR stuff will be null and void. Which ACC team wants to keep a “no way out” condition in place as they sink further and further into the abyss? Maybe Wake or Duke? I’m telling you, the vast majority of the ACC teams don’t want to do a Jim Jones suicide pact and go the way of the doh doh bird. There will be a solution to the GOR one way or another. Way too much at risk to just suffer and die.

Perhaps if Clemson goes to the SEC (or any other team for that matter to a different conference), the receiving conference should pay their new team's exit bill, just like the cell companies do.

But if it's only a $50M buyout, and Clemson could bump up to make $80-100M a year versus $50M with the ACC, it should pay for itself, eh?

Heck, if it's a 150 million payout, that's like a three year money differential between ACC/SEC. Then in year four we're clear.

Jul 5, 2022, 4:12 AM [ in reply to Re: We can't, but I like the idea ]

You lost credibility saying you’re a lawyer! Lawyers are respected & trusted about as much as politicians and the media.

You remind me of the idiots during Covid hysteria saying they’re a doctor and this is what you should do and of course it was the government party line. It was the liberal party line. The CDC admits it was all BS and it didn’t save lives, but we know there are going to be people dying over the next 5 to 10 years because of the lockdowns. Of course I knew it was BS from the beginning because I know how to do simple math and statistics and look at the data from the CDC website.

People remember Eisenhower coining the phrase military industrial complex. He also warned against the rise of the credentialed, the experts, the elites. That was probably more important in hindsight. Although it’s those two combined controlling and manipulating us.

You know contracts are written to ensure lawyers fight them out in court.

I’m sure you know the one about the difference between a catfish and a lawyer!

Welcome to 2022 media. Scare tactics combined with undocumented opinions trying to be spoken into reality. B10/ACC merge would be the only way to compete top to bottom with the upcoming SEC. ACC has won 3 recent National titles, B10 has won 1. The only way to dethrone the SEC permanently is combine ACC/B10 with ND included. ACC/SEC has 17 of the last 18 National Titles. B10 has no chance by itself. SEC fans are loving the idea of the B10 being the 2nd power conference when its barely a threat in college football as it is. Go Tigers!!!

In reality, when it comes to current football title contenders (SEC 2, ACC 1, B10 1, B12 1). It's really just propaganda when it comes to conference strength comparison if referring to 1 sport only. If Bama was in the ACC would we be referred to as the dominant College Football conference? Share ur thoughts folks. GO TIGERS!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is fun.

Jul 5, 2022, 6:27 AM

It doesn't matter to which conference Clemson belongs. I didn't attend a conference and my diploma was not issued by any conference.

It's downtime and we do this same stuff during every downtime. Talking heads need something to say and fans need something to hear. That may be all this is about.

There has been "pushback" in the past when various schools are not in the playoffs: Central Florida, BYU, etc. Seems like the B1G and $EC super leagues is pure snobbery. Not inclusive or fair. Is that what ANYONE wants college athletics to become?!? Wake up people !!

Re: TNET: Report: 'Growing sentiment' Clemson in ACC trio considered for SEC move

Jul 6, 2022, 6:48 AM

Two reasons Clemson will never join the SEC 1. Gamecocks won’t allow it. 2. They would have to stop gathering at the paw after every home game because the SEC would fine the University every time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty straightforward...

Jul 6, 2022, 1:14 PM

If we don't join the SEC or Big10 our future competing for titles is OVER. Simple as that, those two conferences will have all the big names/contenders and they'll likely create their own Title game and playoff. If we do ANYTHING besides join one of those conferences we're effed, PERIOD.

Jul 7, 2022, 6:14 PM

Imagine the impact on recruiting!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Report: 'Growing sentiment' Clemson in ACC trio considered for SEC move

Jul 7, 2022, 8:48 AM

The outlook is not good if we don't move. The money going to Big 10 & SEC schools is going to bury us if we stay put, & any attempt to forge a comparable superconference to those two is likely doomed already... Too many moneymaker teams have already been snapped up, & there's no real reason it wouldn't just keep happening until only two noteworthy conferences remain.

That being said, Screw the SEC. The vast majority of their fanbases are awful, and we already recruit their territory just fine. We are a much better fit in the Big 10 for all purposes except geographic. The Big 10 should want access to southern markets & we should want access to midwestern & pacific markets... it's really win-win.

The Big 10 accepted Nebraska despite it not being a member of the AAU, so the precedent for pulling in a nonmember school to access the tv markets already exists.

Personally, I just really, *REALLY* don't want a bunch of LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Missippi, Texas, Oklahoma, etc fans wandering around our town week in & week out. I also want nothing to do with being subjected to them on their home turf.

South Carolina is bad enough to deal with every year, let's not consider getting too chummy with these jerks, yeah?

Yeah, I'd be cool with going to the Big 10 [16] over SEC if the Nut's were not there. But as long as OSU is in, I'd vote to stay south and out of that cheating swamp.

I suspect quickbaby and I are in a significant minority in preferring the Big10 to the SEC. I agree with most of the negatives he pointed out here. I have been to most of the hometowns of SEC teams. Generally speaking they suck. At best their gameday experience is a lot like ours, but Saturdays in Death Valley are just better. I'd prefer to play more teams from across the nation than the same old lookalikes that populate the SEC.

Personal prejudices aside, I think the Big10 has a brighter future than the SEC. The Big10 has been proactive for a very long time in creating a national, coast to coast footprint. The Big10 market includes the east coast, the west coast and the heavily populated midwest. The Big10 needs to gain market share in the south and Clemson, Miami, GT and FSU give them a shot at an even bigger market nationally. Obviously, Clemson would be a compellingly attractive place for recruits from all over the country. In the Big10, we would bring records of the most recent big successes. We'd be welcome. Who among you expects that from SEC fans?

Bottom line is dollar potential. In 2019 the Big Ten payouts per team were greater than that of the contiguous, deep south SEC. Add in Southern Cal and UCLA and that payout will grow. ESPN's Kornheiser said this week only two teams that counted and remained unclaimed were Notre Dame and Clemson. If the Big Ten gets both those 2 teams and picks up OK ST and Baylor.....

The Big Ten will be the big national player and the SEC will be what it has always been.....A collection of mostly suspect academic schools most of whom have a long history of cheating and that carry an unsavory reputation in most of the nation.

So if there were to be a draft, I'd rather Clemson be taken by the Big 10 than by the South Carolina's league.

Go Tigers!!
