ACC Expansion

Jul 25, 2021, 12:08 PM

ACC should go to 20 teams. Work a priority deal to get ND full time. Then add Ok State, TAM, Nebraska, WVU, and Texas Tech. If any say no, try Cinn, TV contracts would be reworked. More money per school. 4 pods of 5 teams. Play four in your pod and one each in other pods that rotate after a home and away game. Then one more based on rivalries etc. 8 conference games. Two out of conference each. Must be power 5 level. Top two teams in conference play in conference championship. Then playoffs bowls etc. change name to Atlantic Gulf Conference. Probably never happen…….nevermind……

Texas A&M and Nebraska aren't leaving unless you think they hate money.

Texas Tech and Oklahoma State are the two best realistic option.

WVU too, but I'm not sure bitter rivals like Pitt and the Virginia schools are going to be too happy about that.

Nebraska is unhappy with BIG leadership. TAM doesn’t want to deal with Texas again. Would they leave? Probably not but who knows. Money would be closer than you think with a new tv contract and ND in the conference.

I think all B1G members are unhappy since Jim Delaney stepped down. I don't see this new commissioner lasting too long as those are too big shoes to fill.

Fair point about the Aggies, but the SEC won't be as impressed with UT as UT is about themselves.

I just don't see either writing a check to leave their conferences to taking at best equal money from the ACC.

Texas Tech owns the DFW and NW Texas markets. That should be the first phone call.

Do you have any thoughts on WVU? They make sense geographically and a good football school, but I don't have any knowledge how interested Pitt, UV and VT are in keeping WVU out.

You keep posting that Texas Tech owns the DFW market.

Jul 25, 2021, 12:36 PM

Do you have any research to back that up?

I am highly doubtful that your statement is true. I have family in the DFW area and have visited many times. My perception is that the most popular college team there, by a large margin, is Texas, followed by Texas A&M. Texas Tech is a distant third.

Texas Tech has the largest fan base in the DFW area. The Aggies pretty much own Houston and South Texas. UT is UT no doubt and like Clemson is almost a national brand. But much of the UT interest is because they picked up a longhorn t shirt at Walmart yet have no idea where Austin is.

Even still, if TT is 3rd - its still Texas.

But bringing Texass into the SEC maybe perfect timing to invite T-A&M to the ACC....

The Aggies hate UT. But I'll ask again. Do you think they hate money more than UT?

To follow up on your point, Texas Tech changed tremendously in the last 10 - 20 years. It has over 40K students, is the flagship of the Texas Tech University system, and almost double the endowment of Clemson. That is no indictment on Clemson but merely some perspective you aren't getting visiting family in Texas.

Endowment doesn't have much to do with being in one conference or another. TCU has a much larger endowment that Texas Tech and nobody is pushing them for the ACC. I think TCU is a much better fit with the ACC and it's members and they have a tremendous sports program.

I’d rather have TCU than TT

Jul 25, 2021, 12:52 PM [ in reply to Re: ACC Expansion ]

I think Pitt and the VIrginia duo are probably in self preservation mode and likely wouldn’t vote against WVU. With the ACC taking Louisville, the academic concern won’t stop them either. WVU likely wants out. People underestimate how much Nebraska hates being in the BIG. They have been treated as the red headed step child since entering. They likely would leave if others in the mid west came too. TAM hatred of Texas could lead to something especially since they were promised no Texas in the SEC. Texas Tech may not have the national following that TAM and Texas have but they have a widespread following in Texas. Especially in the DFW area. That expansion WITH ND included would force a huge increase in TV contract $ and could help with the ACC network contract problem too.

Absolutely. But it stops at letting you bitter rival into your recruiting territory.

20 teams in a league is way too many because schedules in all sports would be out of balance and people would gripe. Oh sorry, people gripe already because the world is always out to get us.

I really enjoyed when TCU came to Clemson despite the loss. Seemed like they brought more fans than many of the current ACC schools.

Re: ACC Expansion

Jul 25, 2021, 5:25 PM

I think the ACC Commissioner should be very aggressive. In the future I see college football going to 4 super conferences the give the NCAA the boot. They will form their own governing organization and cut the the NCAA out of lots of $$$$.

I think Clemson has leveraged themselves very well to determine their own fate. If the conference’s are going to expand again and Clemson stays in the ACC, I hope the ACC will bring in teams that will improve our strength of schedule as well as teams that give the conference a power boost.

The next few years is going to be like the days the government gave land away for next to nothing. Hang on I believe it’s going to be one heck of a ride. ??????????

4 Devisions, 20 teams. Remember it’s just for fun. It will never happen. North plays 4 teams in devision, 5 in Northeast. South plays 4 teams in devision, 5 in Southeast. 2 or 3 in cross rivalry. Playoffs top 2 - north vs northeast and south vs southeast. Winner between the 2 ACC CHAMPIONS. I know NCAA requires 12 games for playoffs. It could change. I just think it would be fun.
