You guys read about the ECHL player who got suspended

Jan 27, 2022, 2:16 PM

and later released from the team.

During an on-ice skirmish, the player (Panetta) gestured towards/taunted an opposing player (Subban) who is black.

Subban says it was a monkey gesture and racist.

Panetta says he was flexing like a tough guy/body builder (a gesture he has apparently made a number of times before without incident) and that there was no racial intent.

The league suspended Panetta for what the league called "a racial gesture". The team then released Panetta following the ECHL's decision to suspend him.

The video of the incident is on-line. What say ye !?!?!?!

It looked pretty benign to me. Had this not occurred one day after the American Hockey League suspended Krystof Hrabik after he made a racist gesture toward Boko Imama (who is also black), this would have been probably been a non-issue.

Perception is reality in this case BUT if he has done this same gesture many times before as stated I don’t see how it can be called racist if it’s never been brought up before or maybe white players just take it differently.

What evidence is there that he's done it before other random people on the internet saying so?

He said so for whatever that's worth.***

Definitely looked like a monkey gesture to me and the refs on the ice thought as much since the announcement in the arena was a game misconduct for racial gesture.

Years ago one of my hardest-working employees (an older white lady) was putting equipment away at the end of a job. A young black guy sat there smoking--on the clock--and told her she didn't have to be so precise in putting equipmentwhere it belonged.

She responded that anybody, even a "monkey", could do what she was doing.

He complained to the boss that she had just called him a monkey, and the boss compelled me to fire her. I told him the most I would do was counsel and suspend her--but i really couldn't counsel her what not to do again besides read his mind to know what words or gestures would offend him in the future.

The boss didn't appreciate me asking him to make a list of racist words, phrases, gestures or behaviors that a lazy employee would find offensive.

So while she was suspended she found another job and quit. He eventually got fired for no-shows (way over the stated limit before the other boss finally canned him--apparently as an aggrieved party he was entitled to more bad behavior than normal employees), and that boss and I never worked well again in the future.

Ripple effects from 3 centuries of slavery and another of discrimination? Or underachieving personnel empowering themselves by getting offended at the freedom, expression and insensitivity of the achievers?

Depends on where you stand.

that goes WAY out of its way to accommodate what are deemed "historically underutilized" businesses.

Your whole "an aggrieved party or group believing they're entitled to a lot more latitude than other workers" definitely resonates with me. I see it all the time.

I had a similar situation about 20 years ago while managing a manufacturing operation in Miami. We had employees from all over the world and a lot from the Caribbean and Central and South America. 2 guys from the Dominican Republic were unloading a truck and one of them (who happened to be black) found an old piece of rope on the truck and made a noose and told the other (white) Dominican if he was having a bad day “here use this”. They were friends and both just joking around. An African American employee that was not involved in the conversation and was just passing by saw this and complained to HR that the noose was a racial gesture. I had to call the black Dominican guy into the office and counsel him about the incident. He was really apologetic and said he had no idea that would have been offensive to an African American. Managing in that multi-cultural environment was certainly challenging at times but pot luck lunch day was always great!

Imagine if that had been a garage door pull-down.
Your place would have been crawling with FBI agents “investigating.”

His NHL player brother PK posted a video on twitter

First it looks to me like he was mimicking an ape not flexing. When you do the Hans and Franz style flex from SNL you bring your hands in front of your belt and bow up; when you mimick an ape you have your hands at your side like he did.

Second the referees felt it warranted a penalty so that tells me there was something more nefarious to the action. There were two refs like 5 feet away; perhaps there was also a sound that he made that we don’t know about.

Can’t tell from the video

Jan 27, 2022, 3:06 PM

He could have been doing either but based on the reaction from everyone involved, especially Subban and then Blackmon, he was being racist malicious. There’s no place for that in Canada (they’re both canadian).

Canadian hockey is notoriously racist historically, especially against any indigenous people who tried to play the sport.

Racist comments or gestures have no place in any situation.

They don't but some people invent them when none exists. Especially in this day and time, some are trying tp exploit things because few will defend it and it gives them money or their 15 minutes of fame. I will preach this until they lay me in the ground, racism occurs in all races but only one race attracts all the flies. People need to start standing up for "their" rights.

PCU, good comedy! "Can you show me where the campus is?" Hehe. But it really parodies how far liberal some colleges really have gone.
