Too bad we have Swoffie

Jul 10, 2020, 9:59 AM

Swoffie could have taught Notre Dame football the value of being in a conference.

If only their schedule had to be basically all MAC teams.

But of course, Swoffie prevailed, as usual.

I completely agree with you.
It will be good when the ACC finally gets a leader who has a pair.

So what will our new schedule look like now?***

I think people focus only on the aspect of ND not being a full football member, and overlook the benefits of the ACC for having this deal. Football is by far the largest driving force behind the amount of money from television contracts. That's why the ACC is way behind the SEC in television revenue even though the ACC is the top basketball conference.

Having ND available for even just a few games per season that ESPN is allowed to feature as part of the contract, and having them for the other sports adds to our conference revenue. That's not even to mention the added tickets sold for the ACC teams when they host ND. The contract with ND also requires them to join the ACC for football if they ever do decide to join a football conference.

One could argue over how much additional revenue ND helps the ACC add, but the point is the deal with ND isn't to just simply be nice. It hasn't been mentioned yet, but if 3-4 games are being cut out of everyone's schedule this season then I could imagine that impacts the amount of money received from the television contracts this season. If the ACC is able to offer 12 ND games this season(or whatever number is left that NBC doesn't have rights to) then they'll be in better position to argue for receiving as much of our normal revenue this year as possible.

You don't know what you're talking about.....

Notre Dame has major deals with NBC and other media outlets that pay them WAY over what they'd make off of football than if they were in the ACC in football.

It's not a matter of John Swofford not being able to persuade them.

Exactly. Even if the ACC decided to not play any games against ND this season, and football season was still played with ND not able to play at all it's not as if this one off event would suddenly make ND join a football conference next season.

One could question the overall leadership of the ACC, but I don't base that off of the dealings with ND. The current deal with ND helps increase the conference television revenue. How much of an increase is debatable, but it does. Offering them this deal for this season honors the contract we have in place with ND while also potentially keeping more of our television revenue for this season. It also increases goodwill with ND and help us if they decide to join a conference in the future.

Again, one could try and debate over how much benefit all of that actually adds, but at least it's deals that are meant to add benefit. The only thing telling ND to take a hike would accomplish would be to satisfy people who don't like ND, and/or feel it's unfair that they aren't in a football conference. I don't see how making a decision based on emotions that would lead to a decrease in revenue is considered good leadership.

This is not accurate. Their contract with NBC was huge back in the 80s and 90s, but today it is just ok. They would make a little more as a full football member of the ACC and much more if they had joined the B1G.

ND is well off financially and has wealthy alumni throughout the country to support them. I believe they keep the NBC deal going for the prestige factor of having their own thing. If it was only about the money they would fully join a conference.

Why did Swoffie give ND such a great deal at the expense

Jul 10, 2020, 2:51 PM [ in reply to You don't know what you're talking about..... ]

of the rest of the conference.

I'd rather not give them all the conference games, this year or any year.

F ND and Swofford.

I think Swofford has played the long game with ND. Short term take care of them in other sports and of course this opportunity has just popped up. But the conference watches out for them and the conference gains more national exposure with home games vs ND.

And who knows, they may join as soon as this is over. They were already dropping yearly games with big 10 teams before covid.

Clemson voted for him as commish. May not have had the votes to stop him but the fact we didnt oppose him still rankles me.

There will be no football this season. The gov totally screwed us with how the virus was handled. Actually it was the republican governors and Trump not taking it serious.

Hey idiot, the virus is out of control in California, NY, and Michigan...all Democrat controlled. California has bragged about being the first to shut down and to wear masks....and the virus is out of control anyway.
