Woody Hayes is one of the biggest jerks in the history of CFB.

Dec 26, 2019, 1:44 PM

He threw tantrums worse than anything we see now. He was hateful to his players. He was selfish and petty. He would get unsportsmanlike flags that hurt his team. Even in our game against him, one of his own players ran over to tell him to stop hurting the team. Eff Woody Hayes. Glad we took out the trash.

He definitely had anger management issues. He got away with a lot of things that wouldn’t be tolerated today. Imagine a coach today punching a cameraman...

or reporter. Or trying to punch another school's AD. They name the football building for him and put him in their ring of honor

Amazes me that their fanbase still idolizes him. Still

hoping we see some Charlie Bauman jerseys #58 at the game Saturday.

Why what purpose does that serve? We are so far past and above that it isnt funny. Line up and kick their behinds. Period

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It serves the purpose to remind them that their legend coach

tried to punch a college student in the throat for intercepting a ball.

It serves to remind them how we behaved in contrast.

You could easily say alot of those things about Bear Bryant

and many of the "old school" coaches of that era.

Woody Hayes was known for his temper, but he did a lot of great things for his school and players.

I know its game week and all, but I'd tap the brakes on labeling him as 'trash'.

You are 100% correct. He was a huge supporter of the military, was a Navy man, TAUGHT college level military history classes at OSU, and there are several under the radar stories of bonding with students and helping former players overcome and achieve great things.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was a total A-hole D-Bag.

Dec 26, 2019, 2:38 PM [ in reply to You could easily say alot of those things about Bear Bryant ]

"In the summer of 1979, Hayes spoke at the South Carolina high school coaches association clinic. True to form, he didn't apologize for punching Bauman and even admonished several high school coaches in attendance for their facial hair."

"His players at Ohio State had seen Hayes lose it at practice so often, some of them even prepared for it. They made sure to stand to his left. Hayes was left-handed; if you stood to his left, he had to take a step back to throw his left hook, and you had a chance to get out of the way."

At 2 a.m., Enarson and Hugh Hindman had met at the president’s hotel room in nearby Ponte Verde and agreed Hayes had to go immediately. At 8 a.m., Hugh Hindman went to Hayes’s room and gave him the opportunity to resign. Hayes knew his career was over. He just couldn’t bring himself to end it.

“That would make it too easy for you,” Hayes told Hindman. “You better go ahead and fire me.”

At 10 a.m., Hindman held a press conference at the Sheraton. He announced that “Coach Hayes has been relieved of his duties as football coach at Ohio State. I prefer not to go beyond that.”

I was at the clinic in ‘79, front row.
Not only what you said is true, he stopped speaking at one point until a TV cameraman left the room.

“When that____leaves with his camera, I will continue.” Total silence as the poor guy broke down his equipment and left with Hayes staring at him down.”

From what I understand he did give a lot of money to Ohio State and supporting academics.

Doing good deeds doesn't erase the fact that he physically assaulted college football players until the end of his coaching career.

Sure it doesn’t, but it doesn’t condemn him to hell either.

Of course it doesn't condemn him for eternity. If OSU had taken action earlier in his career maybe Hayes would have made an effort to control that temper.

he messed up and paid a large price, let it go lol

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Woody Hayes lost his mind long before he punched our guy.

Dec 26, 2019, 3:02 PM

He once sent spies to Michigan because of rumor of secret shoes which he must have thought were magic or something. The soles made the UM players more sure-footed and faster.

I swear, the man would make a deal with the devil to beat Michigan. He's the kind of nutjob who would poison the trees at Toomers Corner.

anger management issues, but he was also in many ways a Dabo-like coach. Students apparently adored him, in spite of the fact that he was a Nixon supporter. He recruited black kids back when that didn't really happen much, and had black assistant coaches way before that was done much. He taught athletes English and vocabulary, and even military science. In other words, he was a really complicated guy, and like most people, he had demons he had to battle.

He was also a diabetic and his diabetes was mostly uncontrolled. Not making an excuse but that disease being uncontrolled leads to anger and emotional issues.

Best of luck to your Tigers Saturday night but not too much. I have posted since the congratulations for the ass-kicking your team put on my Buckeyes that night. I'm hoping for a game more like 2014 with a different outcome as that game was an epic battle and was probably the springboard to the success Clemson has had as a program since.

His players spoke well of him. Students liked him, and he got along well with the administration. Former USN Officer commanded two different ships in combat during WWII. (Submarine chasers I think)

Not trash.

Trash is the OP's post.
