Yes, yikes. Whichever side of the issue Dabo is on

I hope he has the good sense to keep it to himself. I am really surprised to see Saban taking a public stand, either way. I don't care what he thinks (or what Dabo thinks about politics, for that matter). Maybe Manchin does, maybe he doesn't...

Yeah. I am tired $10 million sports figures who don't have the guts to participate in public issues, and I can't think of a bigger one that voting. Good on him and Jerry WeSt, two West Virginia natives.

Manchin doesn’t represent Saban or West if they don’t reside in WV. It would be like like Lindsay Graham giving a Brandon what Ryan Day thinks. Even so, I will defend their right to voice right or wrong opinions.

No he means like Biden getting millions of fraudulent votes in the very late hours on election night after they supposedly got tired and stop counting at 9 pm and went home to start back up the next day. You know as well as I do that Trump did not lose the election but Biden stole the election. Elections need and should be secure that the only votes that are counted are the ones provided by legal US citizens who have proven they are US citizens. Democrats are trying to rig elections so the can steal every future election just like they stole the 2020 presidential election!

You are an idiot. There is zero evidence the election was stolen and over 60 courts have agreed with that conclusion. Trump lost because enough republicans were sick of his chaos, whining, lying, and bragging. Look at the down ballots in the states of Pa., Ga., Mich., Az. and Wisc. Down ballot republicans out performed trump in every one of those states. So your theory is Democrats stole the presidential election but let the Congressional elections go republican? Really, you are a fool who probably didn't get a vaccine either.

This has nothing to do with voting rights for Saban. It is merely a show of self virtue signaling to endear himself to his minority athletes on his team and to the ones he recruits. He should worry about making sure that all of his players are treated the same regardless of race, nationality, or religion.

like this but what I do have a problem with is when media outlets act like bc icons like saban and west say this that you cant go against 'the greatest of all time'. Both of those guys are very smart and accomplished but their opinion is no different than ours. Imagine for a second if Manchin wrote a letter with other congressmen to urge Saban how to coach his games or tell West how to run the Clippers/Lakers or whoever he works with now.

Also, the level playing field comment is complete crap. Some might even say they dont operate on a level playing field and their careers have benefited by taking jobs in places that the playing field is set them up for success. Not taking anything away form them, but Saban didnt win 5 titles at Iowa St.

Re: I dont have a problem with sports celebs doing something

Very few care what Saban thinks about anything that is unrelated to college football. Saban made a calculated decision that it could help and would not hurt Bama recruiting with the kids. Nationally, those who follow Saban pails in comparison to social influencers like a Kim Kardashian (not a fan) who has much more money and many more followers. (Both have a little more than me.)

No ID. No vote.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The whole NO ID no vote thing is based on a fallacy

Jan 19, 2022, 10:37 PM

that the elections are being rigged.

All the science and intense scrutiny say that they are not. So why is this such a big issue?

The simple fact is that the demographics of the US are changing to more left-leaning and controlling the vote for fewer participants favors the republicans. Republicans need to revise their economic platform and address issues that people care about. Democrats need to stop pretending to care for the poor.

We all should encourage everyone to vote, whether they agree with you or not.

As a liberal who hates this "us versus them" mentality from BOTH sides, I will leave you with this:

We need to #1 - get money out of politics. Nancy Pelosi disagreed with the ban on stock-trading for congress. ###? Can't we all get behind that Nancy is corrupt too?

#2 - we need to stop categorizing any sort of economic help as republican and any sort of social help as "socialism or communism" or democratic.

The two-party system is not good. We don't hold anyone accountable. Plutocracy benefits no one but the very few and you ain't one of them.

So politics is an all or nothing kinda thing? Can’t have opinions which cover both sides of the spectrum? This ‘you’re either with us or agin us’ mentality is a big reason we are where we are today.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Saban getting into politics.

Jan 19, 2022, 4:47 PM

Well these bills are an attempt to federalize what is a state function according to the Constitution. Cementing temporary provisions enacted because of Covid. Ballot Harvesting, no ID, no voter roll purges? The heart strings argument is based on things like Georgia’s “Jim Crow” laws which actually are more lenient than many blue states including NY and Delaware. If they want to federalize voting then pass an Amendment. If not and they manage to ram these through then SCOTUS should rightfully strike them down. Once again here we are with a false argument “who is against voting rights?” and divisive rhetoric “if you’re against us your on the side of Bull Conner, Jefferson Davis, etc.”. And as usual, when it comes to a certain party, the press is either MIA or pushing the narratives.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Saban getting into politics.

Jan 19, 2022, 5:18 PM

Yeah…my comment was more of a response to 2000, who indicated he now knew which side of the aisle Saban sits on. My point was (perhaps I made it poorly) that just because he believes one way on a particular topic, it doesn’t necessarily define his political affiliation…if we even have to assign him a label at all.

As to the bills, I don’t like the idea of federalizing voting either, but there are parts of both bills I do like…not as a matter of federal control, but one of general fairness. An example might be a rural county in GA only providing one polling location with no consideration for those who can’t get there to vote on a single day. I think fairness would dictate that we have more polling locations and/or allow early voting for instance. A lot of folks in this thread gravitate to the voter ID issue or voting by mail. To me, those pale in comparison to just making reasonable accommodations to ensure people can get to a polling place in order to cast their legal vote…period.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Saban getting into politics.

Jan 19, 2022, 6:36 PM

Well Georgia offers early voting. Longer than the examples I listed above. I also can’t understand doing away with purging of voter rolls, though it should be done through committee of all parties involved.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Saban getting into politics.

Jan 20, 2022, 9:44 AM [ in reply to Re: Saban getting into politics. ]

But that rural county in GA doesn't just up and vote on a surprise day. There are set days to vote, i.e. Nov 4th, and it's not a surprise. Plus, they should have access to request and absentee ballot - that process has not changed - well, if you don't count shot-gunning them out to everybody.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Saban getting into politics.

Jan 20, 2022, 11:47 AM

Exactly. Everyone knows months to years in advance when they need to go vote. They have plenty of time to make accommodations so they can get to the polls. That’s one of the weakest excuses. When did people get so helpless that they can’t plan out election days and get ids? Why do leftists think people are so helpless?

Historically Stupid Politics.....

Jan 19, 2022, 11:49 AM

....from the left, says that black Americans don't have the mental capacity to acquire a basic form of identification to vote, when an ID is needed to be competent in every other facet of life.

Lets face facts.....this "woke" movement was built by self-loathing (female) whites who do what they do best: utilize non-existent racial strife to mobilize emotionally-defunct minorities as a means to gain either control/money/notoriety.....or simply to bring society into the same realm of depression that they (the left) seemingly never leave.

Re: Historically Stupid Politics.....

Jan 19, 2022, 12:03 PM

My "feeling" is that his "wokeness" is far more derived from what he learned in 2020 when the media (ESPN) went after any white coach who didn't overtly come out in full support of BLM.....

Saban runs a machine. His machine is overwhelmingly powered by young black athletes who currently live in a time where notoriety can be as valuable as money. If he wants to make headlines (like this one) then you can bet that it's a calculated move by the entire athletic dept to put Alabama out on the airwaves (ESPN) which is already overwhelmingly pro-SEC and pro-left.

him. Every citizen in this country has the right to vote already. Sanctioning avenues to skew the numbers is not freedom its an assault on freedom. The only part of it that i agree with is making election day a national holiday. This would allow all people the chance to get to the polls and eliminate the excuses. Democratic voters have got to start opening their eyes and see that this isn't politics as usual. for Libs and Conservatives alike and therein lies a big part of the problem. According to the Libs, the only "fair" way to conduct an election is to admit as many voters as possible including a greater emphasis on voting by mail which is rife with opportunities for fraud. Dems argue that voting is a right and that the barriers to casting a ballot should be as low as possible and that includes not requiring photo ID's, undocumented immigrants voting, incarcerated individuals or convicted felons voting, and people being "bused in" on election day.

Wake up folks. This is not protecting anyones right to vote but Federalizing elections to bring control of elections into Washington. This would take control of elections away from the states. The name of the bill does not have anything to do with what the bill does. Read the bill not just the title of the bill. Deception in the name.

I agree that we need voter ID in every state and district but what is more important is that we need tabulator ID.

It doesn't matter who or how people vote, it only matters who or how people count those votes as seen in the last election in the wee hours of the night!

An old playbook.

“ I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this—who will count the votes, and how.”
said in 1923; Boris Bazhanov. (A Stalin cabinet member)

Kinda wish folks on this message board will leave politics alone and talk sports. It's obviously one thing we all have in common...

I wonder if Saban knows someone that was denied voting. I bet he doesn't. Nor do I. Can you name someone who was eligible to vote and denied?

The bill is a stupid political stunt.

It is opposed by the only two senators of either party that are brave enough to buck the strict party
line.

We need to look to them as Pres/VP candidates the next time around.

Joe was elected at his advanced age. Now, Saban looks at it like, "I got YEARS to get elected to some cushy political orifice."

I don’t get all the hysteria over the politics of this.
The issues are separate.
Voter bill is one thing. You can be for it or not.
The reason for the 2 dems is not the voter bill. It is eliminating the safety measure of the 60 vote requirement. That needs to stay, no matter which side of politics you are on. So the other side cannot simply run roughshod and pass absolutely stupid bills without getting the middle to support them.

Do you mean legal citizens who have never been convicted of a felony or dishonorably discharged from the military?

In some states, they can never vote again unless they receive a pardon (federal or state, depending on the conviction). It's a number that exploded during the war on drugs to over 6 million people now. In all states, they aren't allowed to own or even handle guns without a federal pardon.

Everyone has the right to vote ........ but they also have an obligation and responsibility to make an effort to understand issues and know who and what they are voting for. Quite frankly, I don't care about making it easier for those who will not go to the slightest trouble to vote. I do care about those who take the responsibility seriously making it easier for them to vote. I'm not sure of the perfect solution, but presently, if you want to vote there is a pretty simple way to do it ..... everywhere!

I am so over famous/celebrities stepping out of their expertise to use their fame to influence things that are not in their purview. Like who cares if a pro footballer likes a certain brand of car or Subway sandwiches? Same goes for their politics.
Basically, shut up and coach football. Stick to pushing or promoting things that directly effect what you are an expert in.

Saban basically does this as a PR stunt to help recruiting of the misinformed.

He is a private citizen like the rest of us. As such he can say what he wants. His voice just has amplitude and this is about recruiting. No one should have to “stay in their lane” as others have stated he should do in other German posts of this German occurrence.
