These charts were part of yesterday's Whitehouse briefing.

Case Fatality Rate US compared to other nations.

New Cases vs Deaths

We've performed about 50 million test so far which is a consideration for evaluating the numbers on the charts.

other nations. Not just on COVID...on everything. It's not a global competition. We need to focus on our positives, and our negatives, and deal with them.

To me, that second graph is concerning. I hope we don't see that death count continue to rise.

Jul 22, 2020, 7:08 AM

It's interesting how diffferently two people can view the same information. I see the second one and see a much lower motaltity rate...a less deadly virus. Thats a great thing. It says we don't need to hide in our houses scared of dying.

Comparison is important. We use it in everyday life to measure how well we are doing and to find areas where we can improve.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Comparison is only effective when controlled.

Jul 22, 2020, 7:10 AM

How can one compare two countries, with completely different populations, geography, etc.? I think it's hard to draw many conclusions.

When I look at the second one, the part that concerns me is that inflection point in July.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The death rate is questionable considering how it's counted.

Jul 22, 2020, 7:17 AM [ in reply to Re: I think too much time is spent comparing to ]

Everyone who dies with covid is considered to have died from covid. With the massive numbers of reported cases without symptoms that becomes greatly exaggerated. Imo, those charts are inaccurate due to the way covid deaths are counted. Still, there is promise in the deaths' rate.

Testing is a problem. It seems the 5-15 minute test are all in DC and state capitals. I don't know a soul who has taken the quick test.

I know someone in the athletic department in a university in Columbia who, along with his entire family, have been taking the quick test daily for several days now.

Imo, comparison and contrast is a valuable way to measure progress when there's no real reference point for success. What is a good, practical reference point for success?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To me, success is zero new deaths, maintained.

Jul 22, 2020, 7:14 AM

Progress should be measured against that goal.

Like with the flu?

Huh? When you compare apples-to-apples (or as close as you can) it is instructive. Death rate as a percentage makes sense to talk about and look at far more than number of cases which IS PURELY A FUNCTION OF NUMBER OF TESTS.

The problem with media coverage is the media has an agenda to make Trump look bad. So, any spin on data that achieves that goal is what the media will be airing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know what they are saying on TV, but

Jul 22, 2020, 7:19 AM

Looking online, I am shocked that the rising rate of new deaths is not getting hardly any coverage. I've been watching that for weeks. All the news websites are talking about is cases, which, while useful, pales in comparison of importance to deaths.

Re: I don't know what they are saying on TV, but

Jul 22, 2020, 7:27 AM

Did anyone not think the death rate would increase as the disease spread across the nation? That's how it works with all flu virus.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I did think it would happen.

Jul 22, 2020, 7:30 AM

I can't speak for others.

It's why it's important, and has been important, that the case numbers have risen so much. It's inevitably followed (after a delay), by people dying. It's simple mathematics.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Am I reading the chart wrong?

Jul 22, 2020, 7:34 AM

It appears the death rate since early June has gone from ~500/da to ~650/da. Is that not correct?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I think that's about correct.

Jul 22, 2020, 7:39 AM

The concern is that the rate of increase will continue, which is what makes the spikes you see in exponential curves. I hope this does not happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

*rate of increase will continue to rise****

But at a much lower rate. To the point that it is going to lose pandemic status soon. There cannot be an expectation of no deaths.

There are things that are much worse than this that receive far less attention.

Did you know that over 400K kids go missing in the US each year...but we baraley hear anything about it. Fear of death is a hell of a thing and it is making people act in irrational ways...even though the chances of dying from COVID are extremely remote.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would not expect zero deaths...

Jul 22, 2020, 7:43 AM

But I would make that my goal and drive towards it.

If you think missing children needs more attention, then start giving it more attention. For example, how many posts have you made about it in the last few months? Letters to your Congressman? Not trying to be critical, but I often feel like people project onto the "media" problems that in the populace. The "media" will start caring when we start caring.

Good Point Prod

Jul 22, 2020, 8:35 AM

My wife and I do support Operation Underground Railroad (fighting sex trafficking) and try to consistenly raise awareness for it. It's hard to get traction because it can feel like "someone elses" problem when we arent individually under threat of it each day; like COVID can feel like.

But we will keep at it.

Re: I would not expect zero deaths...

Jul 22, 2020, 8:42 AM [ in reply to I would not expect zero deaths... ]

Did you just arrive from 1980 with this statement "The "media" will start caring when we start caring."

The media has a liberal agenda. Would you not agree with that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I would not agree with that.

Jul 22, 2020, 9:18 AM

Fox News, Breitbart, etc...are all media. Do you think they have a "liberal agenda"?

Corporate media have a main agenda of making profit. Therefore, they will broadcast what will get them viewers and clicks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The astounding thing is...

Jul 22, 2020, 7:49 AM [ in reply to Re: Yes, I did think it would happen. ]

that your life is in your hands everyday including whether or not you get this virus. If people behaved properly by washing hands, wearing a mask and staying out of other people's faces they/we could prevent the virus from entering our bodies.
