Wow, have "The Good Ol' Boys" ever fallen on hard times.

Feb 17, 2022, 7:41 PM

Flipped over to watch a little of the Duels at Daytona, and the stands are a Ghost Town! I mean, there is practically NOBODY there. Back in the Earnhardt Sr. days, that place would have been packed to the gills. I do believe NASCAR has lost their audience.

I’m still a big fan! Ready for the one Sun. Should be close to a full house for the main event. Have not looked at the weather for Sunday down there though.

Feb 17, 2022, 7:50 PM

was one of the most boring races i have seen in years..nascar is driving away a good portion of their base to court people from places like LA...also couldnt help but laugh at the folks sipping from whine glasses as ice cube preformed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. In an understandable effort to grow the brand and

Feb 17, 2022, 8:32 PM

expand beyond the southeast, they have alienated much of their base and forgotten what made them a big deal to start with. At one time, the Ford/GM/Chrysler rivalry was real and deep, and drove (no pun intended) NASCAR for decades. Now that has almost no meaning whatsoever. That's not NASCAR's fault, but don't disrespect the fans and tracks and towns that built your business, and don't insult those fans with gimmicks and politically tinged BS. Just let these teams build their cars, line them up and let them race.

The "cars" in NASCAR have not resembled real street cars

in any way for many years now. That is another thing that lessened the appeal of NASCAR.

the old Ford/GM/Chrysler rivalry. They really bear only barely recognizable, superficial resemblance to their street car namesakes.

1950 - 1st Southern 500 at Darlington was won by a Plymouth (lighter than the other cars) that qualified last and used hard composite truck tires that never had to be changed during the race. Some race teams had to take tires from fans cars to finish the race because they were blowing so fast.

Also, that Plymouth was purely stock. It was being used to run around town and all they did was put numbers on the doors and hard truck tires on it.

My father was at that race - won by Johnny Mantz who drove

Feb 17, 2022, 10:13 PM [ in reply to Definitely - and that ties into what I was getting at about ]

Exactly. The homogenization all started because of some good ol boys from Dawsonville, GA. They dominated super speedways so severely that NASCAR made them raise the car, then change the compression ratio, then allowed other makes to install their windshield, then came restrictor plate racing. They thought they had no choice since other makes sponsors were threatening to leave the sport. From that point forward nascar was all about making the cars all the same. It was a bad idea IMO. The great make debate became a moot point. The cars are indistinguishable. I’ve always wondered what would’ve happened if nascar had told the other makes to make a better car?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it really started well before that, with the Dodge

Feb 17, 2022, 10:16 PM

Daytona and Plymouth Superbird. But yeah, it gradually got more and more generic until nobody was allowed to have any advantage.

Re: I think it really started well before that, with the Dodge

Feb 17, 2022, 10:47 PM

Perhaps but that was not as high profile as the Elliott boys deal. NASCAR had arrived and was on TV and for the first time million dollar stakes were involved. NASCAR was so blind not to see what they had. They had Elliott and Ford dominating super speedways and Earnhardt and Chevy dominating short tracks. It was really perfect because they had Ford Chevy fans split and in a fever. But in someone’s infinite wisdom they decided making the cars all alike, like Indy cars, was the thing to do? Fixing a situation that wasn’t broken. And they’ve been fixing it since. They were so blind.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I remember it well. Ford/Elliot vs. Chevy/Earnhardt

Feb 18, 2022, 12:27 AM

sold a lot of tickets, cars, merchandise, and TV time. I was never a die hard NASCAR fan, but knew people who took that rivalry very seriously. Of course what happened to the American automotive industry had a lot to do with it too.

Either you like racing or you don’t. The field today is more competitive than when the field was during the Earnhardt error. Dale made me become a Jeff Gordon fan as a matter a fact. You think Kyle Bush or Elliot couldn’t have beaten #3 at all? Of coarse they could.

Feb 17, 2022, 10:17 PM

Well you must not be a race fan because if you were you would know there were near or around (not a junkie) 10 drivers that won races this past season. Can’t say that back when Dale was winning 3 weekends out of the month.

Yes. More competitive today.

Re: Way more competitive ?

Feb 18, 2022, 2:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Way more competitive ? ]

The problem is NASCAR has taken the Stock out of Stock Car Racing. They've gone to Camaro's, Mustang's and Challenger's, why not MAKE teams go back to the STOCK version of these. They are all what teams need to race, rear wheel drive. That's because front wheel drive is what did away with the Stock cars.
People, like myself, who are traditionalist don't enjoy today's NASCAR, why, because "Rubbing is Racing", and there are NO Pearson-Petty, Allison-Yarborough, Gordon-Earnhart rivalries any more. Who wants to sit and watch 43 cars drive around in a circle for 2 and half hours. NASCAR is in big trouble when their current TV contract expires, coming from Spartanburg, the actual birthplace of major race teams, there are people there who still no what is happening in the background and the word is that without a new TV contract the money for purses won't be there, and that will be another nail in NASCAR's proverbial coffin!

Re: Wow, have "The Good Ol' Boys" ever fallen on hard times.

Feb 17, 2022, 8:00 PM

Only thing keeping them afloat is TV dollars. I have no idea what the TV deal is or when it expires, but their ratings have to be in the tank and getting worse year over year. When that money dries up, they are done as a national sport. I don't take any joy in it, but they have done it to themselves due to a myriad of poor decisions.

You can’t mix rednecks and computers. The cars became to technologically advanced. Fuel consumption, pit stops, tires. It’s all computer driven data nowadays. I miss the old days where the best driver won. Not the best group of nerds.

Exactly … I quit watching mainly bc like posted above the drivers back in the day were a lot more likeable and respected … may not make sense but I can’t get attached to anyone like I did back then . I like chase but it’s not like it was with Mark M, Jeff G, Dale, Bobby, etc… just a diff crew and you’re right most of em learn to drive on this E racing crap now… def not the same sport it was even when I was growing up watching it which was every Sunday

It sucks now. They should have just kept in "rednecky", but instead they try to go mainstream like it would ever work. They needed the rebel flags and Trump flags everywhere and the place would be packed. Of course I don't like either of those two things, but it would sell for sure. They thought people in California would love it etc etc.

Re: Wow, have "The Good Ol' Boys" ever fallen on hard times.

I was born and raised in Darlington County.
Drivers and their teams would stay up all night building their cars. They put their blood and sweat into their cars, when stock cars were actually cars and not computers, before they were all equalized. I was an Earnhardt fan. The sport died the day that he did. You think any of these NASCAR Nancy drivers today know how to change a tire on their car?
They closed tracks like Rockingham and Wilkesboro, tracks that built NASCAR. They wanted the money that Texas and California could bring in. The only reason Daytona will have a crowd is because it’s the first race of the season, nothing else to do this time of year, and Florida is now filled with Yankee Yahoos.

Earnhardt and Go Tigers!!
