Expansion Scenario for ACC (ok, I know... yawn)

Nov 20, 2012, 2:27 PM

But here's something that could happen and might make some sense...

Swofford gets antsy: He invites Louisville AND UConn, giving the ACC 15 full-time members, while still keeping a seat warm for ND.

For both football and basketball, the ACC moves to three divisions (or pods): 5 teams each.

In football, you play everyone in your pod once, and two teams each from the other two pods, all rotating. 8 games total.

For hoops, you play everyone in your division twice and everyone else once. 18 games total.

Just a thought. I like the scheduling aspect-- you'd play everyone more than you do with the current structure. You also keep the pods more regional to allow for less travel and more games against rivals.

Starting to sound a lot like the way the Big East went down****

Could do a 4-team playoff. 3 pod winners plus an at large. Would've gotten us in the championship game this year...

Nope. Thats 2 more bball teams - FSU and Clem will leave***

Big10 took the easy shot w/ MD to put blood in the water...

...now the ACC is in a flux. its been widely speculated that they want 16. they have 2 spots available, and all current ACC schools are checking their options. i believe the Big 10 is eyeing UVA, UNC and Georgia Tech, which means 1 gets left out and creates a buyers market. assuming UNC and Duke are joined at the hip, UNC gets left out. i think the SEC was willing to wait and digest their last expansion move, but would grab VT and NC State if they showed interest. this would force the Big 12 to act to finish out their expansion w/ FSU & Clemson. the ACC is done.

actually i think UNC is more joined with NCSt then Duke

despite what it looks like from the outside.

I also think UVA is joined to VT more so then people realize (For slightly different reasons then UNC/NCSt).

UVA/VT has a VA Gov attachment and I've heard that UNC holds

the keys to NCST.

Yeah, I know it's not perfect...

But if we're not going to the SEC (and we're not), then I hope the ACC survives this mess. I think this is a fairly practical way to do it.

Re: Yeah, I know it's not perfect...

Nov 20, 2012, 3:34 PM

do you want to stay if FSU leaves? do you think recruits would still want to play for us if Miami, VT continue to decline or worst one gets picked off and joins the SEC (VT) would you still want to sit tight with the ACC?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU leaving changes everything...

Nov 20, 2012, 3:41 PM

But I would not like it to be only us and them going to the Big 12. I don't think that's a good thing. We have no other ties to any other schools. The ACC is a much better home. If it came to us leaving for the Big 12, I'd hope it would include Georgia Tech, NC State, a couple of others...
