It isn't advertising hits solely.

It's that the largest consumers of media are white adults and when a white girl goes missing, it is easier to connect that story to a daughter or sister in the family .... so the connection and empathy is easier to drive longer engagement with the news site.

So it isn't click bait per se, it's actually a longer term strategy to use that relationship to pull that viewer in long term and drive engagement for more content overall.
