WRU

Sep 7, 2022, 7:51 AM

Is not Clemson anymore

I’ve seen a lot of people criticize our WRs. They deserve all the criticism. Our offenses in the past always had that elite outside WR. Nuk, Mike, Tee, and even Ross were exceptional at winning the 50/50 balls. Ngata and EJ just haven’t been those guys. Are injuries a big reason why, yes. Did the coaches miss on their evaluations, probably.

The thing I’m most concerned about is that elite programs are transitioning away from those WRs, but Clemson isn’t. Ohio State had Wilson, Olave, Smith-Njigba and Egbuka. Alabama had Jameson, Ruggs, Waddle, Smith, Jeudy. LSU had Jefferson, Chase, and Marshall. It feels like all of those WRs are more in the mold of an Antonio Williams instead of Joe Ngata. I’ve been saying this for years, we need more of those types.

The coaches recruited a bunch of big body, deep threat WRs for DJ, because of his arm talent. Match made in Heaven, right? If those WRs aren’t winning 50/50 balls, then what else can they do? Ngata, EJ, and Dacari aren’t screen or short to intermediate passing threats at WR. They are all vertical, outside the numbers type or WRs. But they just aren’t making enough plays.

Beaux and Antonio are more diverse. Both of them can win in the short game. Both of them are good after the catch. Both of them can win vertically. Then you add Spector and Will Taylor in the slot, and you have a more diverse group of WRs. Both are coming back from injuries, so we need to be patient with them.

I think the future is bright at the WR position. We just missed on them in 2019 and 2020. That’s why we are where we are right now. Back to back misses on the recruiting trail. If we aren’t going to utilize the portal like Bama does, then we can’t keep missing.

I'm impressed. Most people could not manage to write that much about our receivers without feeling obligated to mention the one who had two TD's in our first conference win of the season.

ours need more separation from db's than they are getting. then holding on when it gets there would be nice. And I am an advocate of some play action passing at time.

It’s hard creating separation without speed and agility in your route running. Taller WRs typically lack both. Ngata, EJ, and Dacari seem to like them.

Yep and when you add a QB that typically gets the ball out of his hands 1.5 seconds slower than most there really isn't any separation left.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

It never was if you counted our receivers in the NFL. Yes, we have had some really good receivers but not the number needed to be perceived as the best receiver producing school in the country. Recruiting is now national and to say coaches truly evaluate may be a bit of a stretch because I wonder how many times a coach actually goes to see a kid play? A player can look great on film but can you really tell how good, or bad, the competition is on film?

They come to our camps in the summer.

That's fine...

I'd rather be DLU...

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

correct...our current WRs don't come close to 2015-2019 era

Sep 7, 2022, 9:50 AM

that's a large reason for our offensive issues, but our fans just take the low hanging DJ fruit to blame.............b/c it's convenient and easy.

Answer. We miss Jeff Scott more than any coach we've lost***

We have really good WR’s, that’s not our problem, it’s whose throwing the ball. They don’t know what to expect a 100 mph fast ball a little behind them or a floater way over their head.
