Wren H.S. Mid 70’s

Feb 17, 2020, 9:42 PM

I played football at Wren H.S. Back in the mid 70’s and wanted to know if any of you older locals remember one of my teammates Joe Louis Hagood? Joe was the best running back at the H.S level I have ever seen. He blew his knee out in a scrimmage against BHP entering his junior year and was never the same after that. I was also fortunate enough to be a senior and play with his younger brother Ricky when he was a freshman. Ricky and then his younger brother Kent both went on to both play at USC. Ricky was a huge nose guard and Kent was a really good running back. Just wondering if anyone remembered any of those guys? Ricky and Joe both died young.

highway 8 about 10 or 15 years ago...He was the biggest man I believe I have ever met in person. I told a native from the Wren area that I had met a Hagood and as soon as I described him, he immediately said,"Oh yeah, that was Ricky"....

Spud, I had to hit him every day at practice. He was solid and very fast.

As an old Travelers Rest grad I believe Clemson’s own Coach Batson played against those guys during 75-79. Coach Batson has a bushy head of red hair. Coach B went on to play college ball at Newberry. I remember all of the Haygood brothers. They were always in the sport section during football and maybe even basketball season.

Man how the days have passed. Good good days.

Hey what year you played. I played in the 70s. My brother was Jeffrey Tate Wide receiver and my nephew was the running back with Kent Hagood. They use to call them Big George and Little George Turmon. And they also played basketball. I played basketball to with my partner. His name was Marshall mattress.

I played baseball with Little George at Wren when he was a senior. I taught him how to throw a really nice curve ball. I played first base and he pitched. I knew Big G. Too. He could jump to the rafters in the gym playing b-ball. Jeff Tate was our Q.B. On the football team and he also played baseball with us. I graduated in 77.

Mike was a few years behind you though. I graduated in 83 so Mike was 80 or 81 graduate. But Powdersville was so small back then. I remember the old Exxon across from Elrod's dairy :)

Re: Wren H.S. Mid 70’s

Feb 18, 2020, 7:50 AM

I remember you both. I spent many days working with my dad and 2 brothers at my dads Exxon. Boy do I have some stories for that place. My dad would make us pump all the gas for any woman that would pull up to the self service side. You wouldn’t believe how many of those “old 30 something women” would try hitting on at that time a 17 or 18 year old boy. That was back when you had full service at the gas station, young guys now days wouldn’t know what that was.

Hello Dude nga tiger.

Yes sir. Been a long time! I remember the old Powdersville very well and very fondly. Your dads station, Pete Elrod's dairy, and The Orange store is all that was there at one time. Phillip used to give us each a piece of Bazooka Joe bubble gum when we would stop by. Used to ride/push my bike from River road to Mark Bridges house. My how things have changed! A lot of really good football players came through Wren back then. Thanks for the reminder.

Mike

I remember some guy named Marvin that got his lip split open by a very large and very fast nose guard from Woodruff. After that, he kept asking for my helmet because it had a ProGuard face mask.

Re: Wren H.S. Mid 70’s

Feb 18, 2020, 6:22 PM

Boy did we have some times! And our old friend, son of Gill and Norma June. It’s a freakin wonder we’re still alive after all the crap we did. I remember a certain someone who had a little something special for the opposing offenses at the bottom of the pile after we made the tackles on defense??. Do you know who that might be? Oh, and thanks for letting me use your helmet after that #### freak of nature split my chin open with his forearm uppercut. That was a 4.3 40 guy/running back who had about 1% body fat. By the time I snapped the ball he was past me, “look out block”.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wren H.S. Mid 70’s

Feb 18, 2020, 9:57 PM

We had some times. Lost that special something on the field. Probably still there. The ProGuard was a life saver. I believe the guy from Woodruff was named Joey Johnson. He got around me so fast I never touched him. Saw him the next day at the Clemson game. He looked the same with or without pads. The man was a beast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wren H.S. Mid 70’s

Feb 19, 2020, 3:37 AM

You’re correct it was Joey Johnson. I remember talking to him later that year when we played them in b-ball, he told me that he had more tackles in that game than any other that year. That made me feel good ??

I graduated Easley in 83

Feb 18, 2020, 10:20 AM

My Junior year we scrimmaged Wren. I remember seeing one of the biggest hits i ever saw in person. Kent Hagood, on a sweep, was me by former Tiger James Earle who was playing safety. Both guys missed a good portion of the rest of the scrimmage.
Also there used to be a night club in Easley years ago. Ricky was one of the bouncers.

I played for Wren in that game. It was the 77 season. We punched it in from the 1 yd. line on a QB sneak for the win in OT. Advanced to play Woodruff for the Upper State Championship where they proceeded to beat the brakes off of us.
