I agree Rand is a cocky POS, thinking that because he is an eye doctor, that he has any idea how molecular biology and virology work. I disagree in that "When this is all said and done" there will likely be nothing but doubt cause most, including me, don't know how molecular biology and virology work. Everyone will rely on whatever talking head they believe most. I don't think we will ever really know "who is right". I agree with Tig though, it's a circus alright.

I mean he defines gain of function. He then says the virus likely came from this lab. He then says we funded the lab. He then says they did gain of function testing at that lab. Ok, NONE of that means we funded covid development or gain of function research at that lab, that MAY have caused it. And I think that is what got Fauci. Many people bite on stuff like this, and Paul knew that. That's what you do in a circus trial.
We funded that lab. Like all government money, they don't pay any attention to how it is used. China prolly sweetened some deal for us in exchange for it. I dunno. But did we fund gain of function testing on ANYTHING? No. Could our money have been used for it? Maybe. Was it? Who knows. Did covid come from there? Maybe.
And that's about it. Otherwise, it's the circus that we have all come to know and love with Congressional hearings. NOTHING ever comes from them but sound bites.

You’re wrong. Fauci stated it wasn’t gain of function, and Rand Paul read his own definition of gain of function; which matched the research. Fauci still said no, contradicting himself for the Juneteenth time, and got mad and threw some papers around. Seems Alzheimer’s induced rants are all the rage among this administration.

of something that may or may not have happened, that may or may not have applied to covid, that may or may not have used, in part, some of our funding.
If we donate money to a lab, but are forbidden to do gain of function testing, and that lab does gain of function experiments, and we fund the lab, that does NOT MEAN we funded gain of function testing at that lab, even if it was done, and with covid.
I mean I buy stamps from the USPS. I send mail with the USPS. I pay taxes too. Some people send drugs. That doesn't mean I fund the interstate shipment of narcotics.

I'll compare this to a court of law. If you bring 4 expert witnesses up to testify on issues of molecular biology and virology and they can all tout their wisdom and experience, I'll bet I can find 4 on my side that can all tout their wisdom and experience ... and they will say two opposing things and then normal folks like you and I in the jury are confused on which to believe because WE ARE NOWHERE NEAR experts in molecular biology and virology.

You do you brother! I just showed you a video in the "My Pillow Guy" thread where Fauci was the Fox hero during Ebola and the Fox enemy now. Does this affect your opinion?
I feel Fauci has done as well as he could given what and who he was dealing with. His biggest error was lying about masks early on cause he knew they were trying to save them medical ones for the medical folks cause our gov. was not prepared. This cost him some credibility. Anyway, I think Tiggity pretty close to nailed it above: "NONE of that means we funded covid development or gain of function research at that lab and Like all government money, they don't pay any attention to how it is used". I only know that he has made it through 6-7 presidents and only 1 seems to have been a pain in his ###, he seems like a very likable and competent fellow and does not deserve all the crazy asszz idiots sending death threats and fake anthrax packages his way.

Simplest explanation is usually the most likely. By going out into the field to collect specimens, looking for some bats and swabbing the bat guano, you have just increased the likelihood of contamination and risk, unnecessarily exposing the rest of the world by an exponential factor.
Had your blind ambition not gotten the best of you, the number of decades humanity would have survived without that unnecessary exposure is unknown. It could have even been centuries before it surfaced naturally. But by virtue of the fact we went looking for it, and found it, here we are.

hearings and activity. Court reporters are still there and can provide transcripts within 24 hours, and the press can sketch and report on their notes during breaks and after. Recordings available a week later to all. This will cut down on 90% of the grandstanding BS and allow reps to actually do the people's biz instead of auditioning for the next election or TV gig or what the eff ever.
Turn the cameras off and make all these folks work for a living for a change.

Well, I'll be durned. You are correct. The above Cnbc vid cuts the first minute or so off. However, IMO, showing the whole thing actually makes Paul look worse. Maybe they cut some because the average American attention span generally does not exceed 5 minutes. No doubt we are looking at two politicians here, one is just an ALL Trumpian politician. One however, actually cares about the general PUBLIC HEALTH also.
I'll equate it to this, which is why 40% or so of the population DETESTS Fauci. We were coming off the first minor peak and Trump was downplaying a second wave, rebutting what CDC said about Covid in the fall in a presser and I think repeats again " it will just go away" and then the press asks Fauci and he actually has the balls to say "I'm CONVINCED that we are gonna be dealing with Covid in the fall". Well, as you know, this is NOT ALLOWED in Trump world and all the Trumpers were #firefauci from there on out. But what I learned from this was, one of these individuals very much cared about the public's health and wanted us to be adequately prepared and one DID NOT GIVE TWO SH!TS about Americans dying other than how it would affect his chances of reelection. And alas, we did not have to even have to wait until the fall, the fall ended up being the third and most deadly wave. So what we should really focus on is, WHO WAS CORRECT? Well, I'll be durned again, it was the TOP EPIDEMIOLOGIST in our country for the last 40 years and not the guy who pointed at his head and said something like "cause this works really really greatly and I just somehow know things". Imagine that. But, did the facts get in the way of the Trumpers, of course not.
So, the words Fauci said on the above video that I trust in the most are, "Senator Paul, YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT QUITE FRANKLY". He just read one guys opinion and ran with it for political purposes cause you know, his team HAS to be anti-Fauci because the orange narcissistic god king demands so. God forbid Rand actually use his time in a productive way to keep more people from dying in the future.

Mine, like Tucker Carlson's stuff, is an "opinion piece" with facts like "we did have a third wave in the fall" and Fauci was CORRECT intermingled in. We will never know what really happened re: the origins of COVID, but the bigger question to me now is why would the US funnel ANY money into a Chinese lab? Maybe one day, one of the Wuhan scientists defects-doubtful and tells the real story whatever that is?
Are we continuing to fund even on a small scale viral research in China or elsewhere? If so, it needs to stop. Must we outsource everything?

See Tiggity's reply above. I agree on the origins issue but on the question of "but the bigger question to me now is why would the US funnel ANY money into a Chinese lab?" I saw a 60 Minutes story on Covid that featured a Dr. Peter Daszak with EcoHealth. This is the company the NIH funded. I remember him indicating that the funding they provided Wuhan was relatively low like hundred grand or so per year and he said they had to because this is where the emerging bat coronaviruses like Sars were coming from and that they had to jump through certain political hoops to be able to. He seemed a little shady to me so ... TRUE? .... IDK.
I don't know enough to know if the positives from that research could outweigh this huge negative in relation to if it should stop. I do think it was stupid not to stop after discovering that this lab had been documented by US to violate certain safety procedures.

Paul says - "take an animal virus and increase it's transmissibility to humans... you're saying that's not gain of function?"
Fauci - "yes"
Paul quotes the NIH's definition of gain of function: "scientific research that increases the transmissibility among animals is gain of function"
Putting the rest of the noise of that clip aside, what am I missing about the above interaction????
Any Fauci apologists care to explain without getting into who funded who and where Covid came from?

In general what is happening is Rand is referring to and reading from a paper by Richard H. Ebright of Rutgers that claims it is gain of function which is one guy on his own and Fauci is saying, while holding up that same paper is that a long list of folks in his field have disagreed with Ebright and that it doesn't meet the definition of gain of function research. Rand is just playing politics and trying to make Fauci look bad but pisses him off when he implied that he was somehow responsible for 4 million deaths, which Paul then backtracks on("I didn't say that, I said "COULD BE"). Tiggity nailed it above when he said they were arguing over a definition
