Wow, taking a look at our OL attrition....

Apr 3, 2015, 3:48 PM

2011

Shaq Anthony
Isaiah Battle
Ryan Norton
Spencer Region

2012

Isaiah Battle
Patrick Destefano
Jay Guillermo
Oliver Jones
DJ Reader

2013

Tyrone Crowder
Maverick Morris

2014

Justin Falcinelli
Taylor Hearn

2015

Jake Fruhmorgen
Zach Giella
Noah Green
Mitch Hyatt

So S. Anthony leaves. Region was a bust. DeStefano had to quit due to health. Same now for Oliver Jones. And Guillermo appears to be in a similar situation. Of course, DJ Reader went to defense.

Rod Byers, Joe Gore, and Eric MacLain have moved to create additional depth. There may have been another added for depth, but it does seem like we are snake bitten at this position. This is just covering the classes that are active. You can go back to previous years and find the same thing with players like Timothy and J.K. Jay, etc. Both of these also were due to health.

I know that WR has lost a few, but that position has been largely "stacked." For us to need OL so badly, this attrition is a head-scratcher.

No other position has seemed to take such a hit.

I know we have not recruited this position as well, although we are on the upswing. But the attrition of what we have had is what baffles me....

Here's hoping Morris, Falcinelli, and Hearn are ready to step up!

It feels like we've been having OL problems forever. The last time we had an OL that was anywhere near dominant was 2006. Unfortunately, we had Proctor, who just wasn't a very good QB.

Re: Wow, taking a look at our OL attrition....

I count 18 scholarship DL for 4 spots and 12-14 scholarship OL for 4 spots (14 with jones and gulermo, 12 without). These numbers include incoming freshman.

That is why I cringe when people speak of taking in 3 OL when we are losing 4, not counting attrition. If anything we should be taking in MORE than the 4 we lose not less.

But the reply is "trust the coaches" rather than a factual rebuttal so I don't know what the point is in these boards.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Numbers on DL are different from numbers on OL ...

Apr 3, 2015, 4:14 PM

We constantly rotate our two-deep DL from the opening gun, while the OL starters usually log almost all of the playing time as long as the game is still in question.

IMHO, we should not take OL just to create numbers at OL every year.

We need to be far more selective than we have been and we need to continue to recruit and sign OL of the potential quality that we signed most recently.

Just signing a bunch of big guys at OL who wash out after occupying a scholarship doesn't help our depth or our quality of play.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong. OL is the hardest position to project and they get

Apr 3, 2015, 8:47 PM

hurt easily, don't develop, etc.

Danny Ford took at least 3 OL every year, with a target of 4. Seeing as though our last dominant OL was '90 or '91 and the fact that Ford always had a very good if not dominant OL I think I'll side with his view over yours.

Good ... you and Danny hash it out and ...

Apr 3, 2015, 9:33 PM

... let the coaches know what you decide.

I'm betting Danny won't advise signing big guys every year who never contribute just to bolster numbers.

But, who knows, maybe that's what he'll tell you.

No one said sign just to sign, it's called recruiting, but

way to spin nonsense when the facts slam your baseless opinion.

5 offensive line positions. That means our numbers are even worse.

If we don't trust the coaches, what are we to do about it?

b1tch on tigerboard I guess.

That'll fix it.

Not to mention...

Apr 3, 2015, 3:58 PM [ in reply to Re: Wow, taking a look at our OL attrition.... ]

that our head coach and offensive coordinator were two of the worst coaches to work at a Div. I school.

seems it has always been like that. At least now we are starting to recruit it better.

Tigergal85 talks her some good football.

Agree across the board, and that's the single most-important factor, IMHO, that's limited this program. We've had killer QB's, especially Boyd, killer RB's, the best fleet of WR's in college football over the last five years. We had the #1 defense in the country - by a mile - last year. Even had good PK's and punters. Our coverage units were occasionally a clown show, and we've gotten nothing out of the return game since CJ Spiller left, which hasn't helped...but a lack of a dominant, or occasionally even passable, OL, has been the thing that's hamstrung us the most. And a lot of it was plain and simple numbers. "Baffling" is right, because Dabo's gotten durn near everything else right.

Fortunately it appears this has been addressed with this latest crew, and I am hearing the plan is to take another 4 this year. Lotta very good names we're involved with, again. Hopefully we've turned the corner there. Caldwell did have some good lines at Vandy, but he and Morris apparently were not always on the same page, here at Clemson. If we can just line up and pound the rock when we wanna, could be a fun couple of years...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But, we took 10 OL total in 2011 & 2012 so ...

Apr 3, 2015, 5:59 PM

... we should have been fine with just taking a couple of OL in 2013 & 2014 ... and those numbers don't even count Joe Gore, Eric Mac Lain, and Jerome Maybank.

For a several reasons, only two of those original 10 are still playing OL for Clemson (maybe 3 if Guillermo comes back) ... but Mac Lain and Gore bolster the count.

To me, it seems like the overall numbers were fine, but the talent and/or durability were lacking.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But that's part of the problem, unbalanced classes. Take at

Apr 3, 2015, 8:51 PM

least 3 every year, while targeting 4, and you eliminate these issues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Totally agree, if you can get 3-4 every year who can produce

Apr 3, 2015, 9:22 PM

Hopefully we're getting better at identifying and attracting those.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Was disappointed that we took only 2 in 2014. We need to

Apr 3, 2015, 5:53 PM

sign a minimum of 4 again this year, and need to bring them in Janauary if possible.

Re: Wow, taking a look at our OL attrition....

Can't really count Reader as we recruited him to play DT from the get go. He never spent one second on
the other side of the ball.

Re: Wow, taking a look at our OL attrition....

Apr 3, 2015, 7:21 PM

I didn't even know that Tyrone Crowder or Maverick Morris had left. Will we
have anyone to play OL?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wow, taking a look at our OL attrition....

Apr 3, 2015, 9:54 PM

We should sign minimum 4 OL every year. Really, I would say 5. If 3 out of the 5 pan out by Jr year, then you have 6 Sr and Jr OL in rotation with 10 underclassmen working to get in. Cull the rest.
