useless as a measure of strength. Don't burn the messenger...take it with a grade of slaw.

ou'd think the NFL would have figured that out by now

Would You Kindly Explain To Me

Feb 23, 2014, 7:19 AM

how an OL bench pressing 225 pounds for as many reps as possible is relevant to football?

Feb 23, 2014, 8:18 AM

why the NFL consistently has used this as a gauge to measure strength then?

Re: Would You Kindly Explain To Me

Feb 23, 2014, 3:33 PM

Because it is a simple lift and there is far less risk i.e. liability to the NFL. At 225 lbs, for lineman, it is a more accurate indicator of muscle endurance than strength.

It's possible they count the number of times it was possible for each man and figure out that if his number was more than another guy's possible number, then it is possible that he is stronger and has more endurance ...... ......possibly.

For many positions its important to be able to keep a person off of you and bench is a measure of that ability. Also bench is still the best measure of upper body strength available.

Many would argue that it is not.

I believe many would argue that its not the best measure of ones overall strength but if you just want to know how much weight a person can push using only thier arms it's as good as your going to find. It's probably a good measure for potential too since its a pretty standard lift that has low risk for serious injury.

As a SWAG I would say it compares well with the physical

ability to confront and push around defenders play after play after play, considering that football games last three hours long and such and that's what's expected from OL during the course of a game.

Feb 23, 2014, 4:52 PM

BT just looked good. Not carrying any bad looking weight like many seem to do even at the pro level.
