Would South Carolina be better in the ACC?

Nov 3, 2015, 8:55 AM

Would they have a better record? They did beat the #2 team in the ACC.

Yes..maybe a game or two...probably a similar level to NCST. They wouldn't have done quite as well in recruiting...they have been able to use SEC affiliation to their advantage.

Having actually seen USC in the ACC during my lifetime I can honestly say their entire program should have never left the conference! Coach McGuire led USC out due to limited interests and USC suffered as an independent. Certainly joining the SEC has benefitted the university, but records wise outside of select sports the Gamecocks have not been largely successful.

Having had a candid conversation with Mike McGee before he retired as AD, he indicated USC had been approached to rejoin, but could not afford the costs associated with doing so. The ACC will likely never get USC back accordingly. We need to look elsewhere to evolve.

Go Tigers!

Short answer. No.***

worse

Nov 3, 2015, 8:59 AM

because at least 1/2 of their top players couldn't get in under ACC academics.

Re: Would South Carolina be better in the ACC?

Nov 3, 2015, 9:00 AM

Are you arguing that what conference you are in makes you a better team? You should work for ESPN.

However, I do think they would be under Swofford's non-UNC academic iron first; therefore, they would have smarter players which could have resulted in an extra win... Maybe? Come 2016 they'll wish they were in the ACC so they could ride its coattails.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They would have to grey shirtfor a few years. Not academically eligible for the acc.***

It looks like they would fall between GT (74) (3-5) and UVA (88) (3-6). They are currently 3-5, so I'd say no.

They beat UCF (127) and Vandy (84) while loosing to Kentucky (75) and Missouri (76). Tennessee and UGA are worse than App St and the Citadel doesn't count.

Re: Would South Carolina be better in the ACC?

Nov 3, 2015, 10:42 AM

GT is 3-6, not 3-5.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Depends on whose schedule they had.

Nov 3, 2015, 9:08 AM

If they had Clemson's schedule for example...

Let's use my ratings to determine if S. Carolina would have won the game or not (and ignore home/road, just for the sake of simplicity). I have South Carolina at #83 right now.

FCS Wofford - W
#31 App St. - L
#55 Louisville - L
#5 Notre Dame - L
#65 Georgia Tech
#90 Boston College - W
#43 Miami - L
#46 NC State - L

They are 2-6 there. This is oversimplified, and remember S. Carolina did beat a team this year that is much more highly ranked (#29 North Carolina).

But if they had, say, NC State's schedule, and the same thing is done:

#108 Troy - W
FCS E. Kentucky - W
#111 Old Dominion - W
#100 South Alabama - W
#55 Louisville - L
#66 Virginia Tech - L
#94 Wake Forest - W
#1 Clemson - L

So that's 5-3.

The number 2 team in the ACC is FSU, not UNC. Is that you Swoffie?

Re: Would South Carolina be better in the ACC?

Nov 3, 2015, 9:08 AM

they probably wouldn't have planted the trees around their stadium...otherwise, they'd still be bottom feeders.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They would hurt the ACC's image.

Nov 3, 2015, 9:08 AM

We don't need anymore Wake Forest types.

UNC game was a fluke - USC would lower quality of ACC

Nov 3, 2015, 9:09 AM

I think a usuck fan gave unC qB 10000 for each interception - 3 - 2 to wideopen db in endzone and rb Hood ran at will against usc, and coaches took him out stupidly in redzone

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well...if they played Clemson's schedule this year.....

Nov 3, 2015, 9:12 AM

they would still have no more than three or four wins at this point in the season and that's assuming they could beat App State (a big assumption I know).

It Would Help Clemson's Schedule A Lot

Nov 3, 2015, 9:15 AM

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the coots and want them to be in a perpetual state of inferiority to Clemson.

BUT:

It would allow us to schedule another quality non-conference game. South Carolina in the ACC (Presumably a Coastal Team) would probably have us drop GT as our crossover game for the coots. Would could then play one SEC school and maybe some other Power 5 Problem.

Just a thought

ACC wimmins basketball much better than SEC

Nov 3, 2015, 9:17 AM

and since all they care about now is chick ball, I would say a move to the ACC would hurt them overall.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would South Carolina be better in the ACC?

Nov 3, 2015, 9:18 AM

No they wouldn't. ESECPN helps SEC teams in recruiting by pushing their product. Take the SEC label from the coots, and they couldn't recruit to that dump in cootlumbia with any coach.

Re: Would South Carolina be better in the ACC?

Nov 3, 2015, 10:08 AM

Better question is who should the SEC replace USCjr with? SEC would take a hit in women's basketball, but cant help to improve their stock in all other sports. They are in the same boat as Vandy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would they scuk less?

Nov 3, 2015, 10:13 AM

No, they might win another game or two with the right schedule but they wouldn't take any trophies home.

All of those teams would we undefeated in any league besides the sec. It's possible to believe that USuC is better than Clemson, Ohio state, Baylor, and tcu.

Weren't they in the acc When it was being started.and that was when they got out. They wanted to be in the sec. They got in the sec so they should stay. I don't think the acc wants them

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They left the ACC, in large part, becasue....

Nov 3, 2015, 10:46 AM

the ACC's academic standards made it too difficult for them to recruit effectively.
