Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Mar 16, 2022, 2:32 PM

Think about that. Makes some sense.

A loss would not derail the title chances of either team and a win builds momentum.

1) Would Clemson HONESTLY want to play Georgia every year?

2) Would you want a neutral site rotational game?

3) Alternate home and home?

It has, for the most part, been a great rivalry!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no ... been there done that

Mar 16, 2022, 2:37 PM

rather play different BIG, PAc, 12, teams..

would love a home and away with USC, MIchigan, Texas.. Tired of playing jonny come latelies from the SEC.

Clemson will get it's chance at Bama in the CFP.. Clemson already plays SCar every year so there is no need to waste games on the other 2nd tier SEC teams.

Obviously, UGA wants to play PAC12 - Oregon 9/3/22. I think Clemson and UGA should play every year about the time UGA plays Kent State - last Saturday in September. Let both teams get their feet wet and see what shakes out in game 4.

to be the first game each season or at a neutral site each time, though. But I'd definitely like to return to playing each other every season like in the past.

1. Why not play ever year? We're not scared.

2. Home and Home (better atmosphere at Death Valley)

3. Mostly at Clemson to make the series even. (I believe we have played more in Athens)

Mar 16, 2022, 4:35 PM

We used to play every year, so do it again. Georgia stopped the series.
Absolutely Home and Home, plus every 5 years, Charlotte or Atlanta.
Georgia is the much larger school, larger alumni base, budget, etc.....
We used to play EVERY year in Athens.
Clemson has always been at a disadvantage, but that makes the wins sweeter!
Playing Georgia, FSU and USC each year gave us some rivalry's that meant something.

Hershel only lost one regular season game in his career, at Clemson, and never scored a TD against us!
From Georgia Website: Many believe this (1981) may have been the best of the teams in the early '80's. Walker, Scott, and Belue all had great seasons in leading the 'Dogs to a 10-1 regular season and their second straight SEC championship.
BUT They left out they lost to eventual National Champion 'little ole' CLEMSON!

Never seem to get them on our UP years recently, because they don't want to play Clemson.
Just a point, if we had Trevor last year, we would have won the game and Georgia scores 3 points.

Re: Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Mar 17, 2022, 11:00 AM

Because it represents a risk to the SEC. Let’s just say they play every year and split evenly which I think is not very far fetched and certainly in line with recent history. The years that GA loses it blows holes in the SEC BS that they are top to bottom the best conference if one of their top dogs loses to a lowly ACC team and it significantly lowers the chance of 2 SEC teams making the playoffs. Exactly the same reason the SEC canceled non conference rivalry games in 2020.

I personally would love to see Clemson/GA home and home every year. Not the first game. Maybe we should open with SC and GA open with Tech and make this an annual Thanksgiving weekend game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Mar 17, 2022, 11:18 AM

They played in 2013, 2014, 2021, and if RedDawg is correct in his post, will play five more times in the next 10 years or so. That's eight games in 20 years. That may not seem like much but can you name two other high profile, non-conference teams who play that often?

As for the SEC cancelling noncon games in 2020 to protect SEC teams, who were they protecting? You really think anyone at the SEC offices cancelled SC v Clemson because they thought a loss to Clemson might keep SC out of the playoff? Think the SEC was afraid Ga Tech was going to derail UGA?

Also, I don't buy your theory about SEC "bs." The SEC is, top to bottom, the best football conference. No one would chalk up a loss to Clemson as a lowly ACC team. It would thought of as it alway is, a loss to the one elite ACC team. Remember, Clemson was the favorite going in the UGA game last year.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Mar 17, 2022, 1:18 PM

Most people would agree with your prediction for those 2 games. It was the other 2 rivalry games that scared (yes scared) the SEC in 2020. Louisville had a great chance at beating Kentucky and depending on the FL St/FL game the mighty SEC ends up at best 2-2 and possibly 1-3 against the lowly ACC and that whole BS (yes BS) superiority complex takes a huge hit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Mar 17, 2022, 2:54 PM

You suggested the SEC cancelled the games to better enable two SEC teams making the playoff. You see a scenario where Kentucky misses out on a playoff spot because of a loss to Louisville? Both teams were coming off 8-5 records. You really think losing that game was going to be the difference in making the playoffs?

Florida was coming off a 10 win 2019 and most had them winnning the East in 2020, which they did. I'm sure FSU, coming off a 6-7 season had SEC officials shaking in their boots. The 2020 Noles finished 3-6. If you want to believe they were going to beat the 2020 Gators, I can't help you.

The only one of those four games which even might have gone the ACC's way was Louisville, and that was at best a toss up.

This is a new level of conspiracy.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Mar 17, 2022, 3:14 PM

So Louisville wins that toss up and the SEC/ACC split 2-2 in those games. The way it affects playoff selections is in the strength of schedule and strength of record and the “eye test” that all the SEC homers love - you know the SEC gauntlet and all that cr ap. At the end of the 2020 season all the SEC coaches were yapping about how they played fewer games but all of them were against “tough SEC opponents “. GA’s win over Kentucky doesn’t look as good if KY has a “bad” loss” to an ACC team like Louisville. Going 2-2 in those games just hurts the whole superiority talking point for the SEC. Throw in they made the announcement prohibiting non-conference games 2 days after the ACC announced their schedule that allowed them is a pretty obvious dodge if your eyes are open.

My full answers...

Mar 16, 2022, 3:21 PM

1) Neither team necessarily wants to play each other every year. Limits recruiting exposure. I'd be good with 3-4 games every 8 years.

2) In a 8 year period, I'd play 1 in Clemson, 1 in Athens, and 1 in a neutral location. Every now and then instead of 1 neutral location it could be 2 with the two being Charlotte and Atlanta (which are regional). The other neutral locations should not be those two. Let's play in Nashville. Let's play in Orlando or Tampa. Lets play in DC.

Re: Would a Georgia versus Clemson season opener suit you guys?

Well, both teams are currently scheduled to play each other 5 more times through 2033 (2024, 2029, 2030, 2032, & 2033). Counting this past year, that's 6 times in a dozen years. So that will play itself out.

The years we aren't scheduled, I think it'd be great to play in the CFP. This year the Peach Bowl in Atlanta is hosting a Semi. That would be a good one.

series, until recent times. That being said, the only way I would want the series to resume would be with a true home and home, none of this neutral site, made for TV crap. Clemson vs Georgia will always be a big enough game to stand on its own merit without a bunch of made up hype.

Rivalries like this were the first victims of conference expansion, years ago.

If I had my druthers, we would play the Dawgs every year, and boot the Coots to the curb. Or put them in the rotation with SC State, Furman, and The Citadel.

Re: I don’t see the point in neutral games sites. Nothing

Mar 17, 2022, 10:56 AM

I agree that a big-time home game is great, as is playing a big-time opponent on the road (I've had a lot of great trips to Memorial Stadium). But neutral site games are also part of the fabric of College football. I've been to the Georgia-Florida Cocktail Party a ton of times and the atmosphere is absolutely electric. Same with the Red River Shootout. Our group had a great time tailgating in Charlotte with our lot being almost equal UGA and Clemson fans (probably about 60% Clemson). Like I mentioned above, we are scheduled to play 6 times from 2021 thru 2033; with 2 neutral sites (Char & Atl), 2 in Clemson, and 2 in Athens.

Then SEC upped their conference game requirement to 7 or 8 in 1987. The bulldog cry-babies claimed they couldn't afford to play both us AND South Carolina every year, so it set in motion the two on-two off schedule until SC joined the SEC. The spot has been open for Georgia ever since. Once in a while, they agree to play.

Would UGA really want an annual game? They luckily won that last one without scoring an offensive TD. It doesn't mean that would happen on a yearly basis. BTW, Clemson didn't cancel the annual rivalry game, GA did.
