Worst game experience ever in over 40 years

3.5 years ago, at the age of 47 I almost died, since then I have been in and out of the hospital with heart issues and other major disease processes. My biggest regret in dealing with all of that was the inability to go to see my Tigers play. I couldn't take the walking and the travel. so yesterday, I had a friend offer me his tickets to the game today for FREE and his parking pass. I eagerly jumped at the chance to once again sit in Death Valley with 80K of my closest friends. these were not handicapped seats but they were good seats in the lower deck so I felt like I could handle the physical exertion that is required to go to the game. Understand I am all of 4 ft 9 inches hence the name Smurf. I have been going to games since before there was ever a top deck. the so called "gentleman " that had the seats in front of me continued to STAND ( yes I know, they are called stands for a reason but we also buy a SEAT for that same reason) since I am so "vertically challenged" it is very difficult for me to see around and over people who stand. my seat had seat backs so standing on the bleachers was not an option. I asked him if he was going to stand for the entire game. he said yes. then I asked if he would consider just switching seats. ( same exact seats with seat backs only he would be one row up ( I was on AA) he said no, then he told his GF to stand so it blocked my IDENTICAL TWIN sister. I informed him that typical Clemson gentleman usually considered those around him. I had a small child behind me, I knew if I stood even at 4 9 he could not see, I did stand when a big run or play occurred but did my best to allow him to see the game as well. when my sister left to go to the restroom a so called gentleman tapped the jerk in front of me on the shoulder and told him "WAY TO GO I would not sit either" I then turned to the ### behind me and told him he obviously has ZERO manners, that I am only 4 9 I can not see through or around the over 6 ft jerk in front of us. the jerk eventually found his seat after the start of the 2nd qtr, the ### behind me informed me I obviously had never been to a Clemson game before, I informed him I most certainly had, I have been a fan for 50 YRs. I have never, ever, had a fan react so rudely to a request to allow a fan to see, whether it was so I could see the game or my children. Clemson fans have always had manners. I hope he enjoyed bullying a handicapped female, I guess he gets off bullying his GF or wife . as for the so called gentleman behind me, would he tolerate anyone talking to or treating his wife the way he talked to me. and his kids witnessed this"mature behavior" and way to set a good example. How would he feel if someone had spoken to a female member of his family the way we were treated. I like to stand and see big plays and exciting runs, but standing for the sake of standing is rude to those who also have a right to see the game. ALL I ask is to consider those around you. a little common decency isn't that much to ask. and if the jerk that treated us so rudely is on here. I will pray that you learn some manners and how to treat a lady properly because a true gentleman would not talk to or behave in the manner these two jerks behaved today, since when it is appropriate to give a pat on the back and thumbs up for refusing to cooperate or mistreating a lady. all I ask is to please consider those around you and allow them to enjoy the game as well, looking at your butt most of the game was not on my agenda for the game today. way to go I hope you are proud of your self for your behavior. I will pray that you find some manners. and common decency the next time you are in a public setting. not evryone is over 5 ft or can see over or around you, jsut be considerate.

And yell for like 35 seconds.
Probably not for a game like today, but any game within a couple scores.
That said, I would have switched with smurf or been thoughtful if someone had a need.. a request may or may not be respected, but a need always will be. And I'll try to accommodate a request.
My daughter and I fly in from CA now for a game or two a year. With rental car, hotels, etc its close to $800 a ticket.. and we have a blast and get our $s worth.
If you want to sit in quiet, there are plenty of places to do that.

Standing and yelling have nothing to do with each other. Most people can yell without standing. The people who aren't jerks stand when the situation warrants it, then they sit down until something happens to warrant standing again. People who stand the entire game are thoughtless, and inconsiderate. Sort of like people who talk during movies and drive slow in the left lane.

Actually you're way off on your statement here. People who stand for an entire game are taking in the experience the way they enjoy it the most. People who sit most of the game are doing the same. It's the inconsiderate ones that are the jerks. Just because you choose to sit down & don't understand why others don't doesn't make them wrong. Outside of being vulgar & offensive, every fan has their right to support their team the way they choose.

there are people that will actually stand when the people in front of them are sitting even though they know that by standing the people behind them can't see and also knowing that if they were sitting, they would be able to see just as good.
I have no problem standing the whole game if I need to. I'm more excitable than most and tend to jump up on my feet quicker than most. But if everyone in front of me is sitting, I'll sit even if I'd rather stand.

I stick with my original assessment that people who insist on standing the entire game are thoughtless and inconsiderate.
Stand if the situation warrants it, then sit down until the next time something exciting happens.
If you don't have the self-control to do that, then at least admit that you are indeed ... thoughtless and inconsiderate and you might even be a jerk.

Man, I appreciate your view on this but I can't disagree more. I stand every minute of every quarter for every Clemson game I go to. I don't do it to be a "jerk", I do it because I like to be involved. I jump up and down, I yell, I give people high 5's, the whole 9 yards. Even to the point of doing the same exact thing at home; I stand the whole game even when I watch it on TV. I don't do it to be a jerk, I do it because I love Clemson athletics, especially football. Sitting just doesn't excite me. It lacks enthusiasm. Just my opinion on the matter. I certainly respect yours.

When I was healthy I would do the same. I think the biggest issue besides the two men being ugly to a lady is she asked if they would change seats with her. He would lose nothing by doing this. That is where this man was, in my opinion, an a$$. Those of us that have been a member of IPTAY FOR 35 or more years and have gotten older or very ill. I love going to games and there is nothing better than tailgating and I would hope that ALL Clemson fans would be supportive of each other

between rows. Not even close. Code requires 5 steps for a 30 inch change. A 30" seat height change would make the stadium rise 300 ft.

I know many people in the stands today won't be back this year. A kind person would have switched seats with you assuming all was equal. That's on them...But I do not have the expectation that others will change their behavior to meet my wishes. I am impressed by the determination our fans have to be at the games. I look around and see frail elders, people with physical challenges of all kinds where it would obviously just be easier to stay home. I admire that they choose to be at the games. However if you can't stand, a college football game is not the environment to expect people not to stand around you as the choose. Very similar to my desire as a "non drinker, non smoker" not to have to sit beside the drunk with a 2 pack a day habit. If and when that happens the goal is to just make the best of it and control what I can, my attitude. My job is to be there and support our Tigers. Nothing that a Tiger win and shower can't handle.

up there, but not usually "as long" as they stand in the lower decks.
The rise is also much higher in the upper deck, so you can generally see over someone who is standing, or at least when you stand up (as a 5'1" shortie myself) you definitely can see over them up there

Today. I'm very animated and will jump up quite often at the games however will do my best to accommodate people around me if they are sitting and my excitement is hurting their game day experience. I would have switched seats with you and cheered on with you.

That's just a pure Idiot, the whole standing up the whole game is about ignorant.
Especially in a game that's never in doubt.
I understand and hope everyone is loud when the Tigers are on D. Yes I get that.
But why in the h ell would you want to stand for 3-4 hrs.
It's rude and there are lots of kids and old people that can't stand that long.
If you want to stand the whole game go to the hill.

A game never in doubt, I'm totally with you. But other games I'm going to stand. And close games I'm standing on one foot, kicking the chair or bleachers with my other, and yelling. Now, if everyoneis sitting, I'll sit... and be loud. No prob. But Im not sitting and looking at some dude's back to help some bigger cause.
If you're kid is too young to stand for a game they probably aren't interested.
If you're kid is not handicapped but cannot stand for 3 hrs because of physical conditioning... well..
If you're older, we're going to have to work it out at our seats to find something that works for both of us. You enjoy the game by sitting, I enjoy it by standing. One's desire is not more important than another's. I won't, however, condescend you for wanting to sit.
If you're injured, handicapped, or have some other special need, I'll bend over backwards for you.

Normally after about 10 mins everybody sits except a few people.
During big games and close games yeah we stand more but usually everyone around me settles in.
On big plays especially when the Tigers are on D I get it.
But when we have the ball what is the purpose to stand?

I do sit when on offense (unless everyone is still up blocking me.)
But I do stand on D for games within a couple of scores.
I also stood the whole NCG in Phx, ACCCG with UNC, and FSU game 2 yrs ago in DV.. but everyone around me did too. Those games were tense.

Dear Tigersmurf,
99.9% of Clemson fans or most fans in general would made sure you had a better game day experience by swapping seats. Unfortunately with Clemson's recent success it is bringing a few roaches out of the wood work that were closet fans until we started winning. I understand how difficult it is to stand during much of the game when you have medical problems. Like you I was attending Clemson games before the upper decks were built and we were and pretty average team at that time, for the most part my years attending home and away games I have met some great people. Every now and then you run into those who could care less if you could see the game or not.
I hope your next game day experience at DV is a much better one. Glad you were well enough to attend the game though. You will be in my prayers for continued good health and I hope you make it to another game this year and have a much better time.
FYI fans not everyone is able to stand for 4 quarters so please be aware of those around you. They or someone else paid to see the game too! No body is asking fans to sit down the entire game but try to be aware of those around you who like Tigersmurf may need a kind act like switching seats. Then there are kids who want to see the game too. Being 5'8" I know what's it's like trying to look over someone taller than me.

Clemson fans that way. I've been going to Clemson games for over 40 years and my father taught me as a young kid to always be considerate of the people behind me; something that I continue to pass down to my kids now. I truly believe people reap what they sow and for the jerks in front and behind you yesterday, I have no doubt it will come full circle for them.
Sorry you had to endure that yesterday. Most Clemson fans/alumni are better than that.

I like to stand a lot as well, yes sometimes I even stand when the people in front of me are sitting. It is not for the person in front of me to decide when I sit down.
I also sometimes sit when people in front of me are standing, especially when we are up by 40 like yesterday.
Now, Next week for Auburn I may not sit at all. Probably won't except on TV timeouts.
Now, I definitely would have switched seats with you with setbacks or not, and I have seat backs. Thats just common courtesy and I find it disgusting that they would not switch seats with you.
Adding to that, I have a 90 something year old couple behind me that both graduated from Clemson in the 30's I believe, and he played football for Clemson. It is hard for him to stand, and if I see he is having trouble I will definitely try to move out of his way if possible or even sit down if the people in front of me are standing so he can see better.
However, if someone that has no problem standing asks me to sit, thats probably not going to happen and I find it rude to even be asked that question quite honestly.
So in the end, I have no clue how I feel, each situation is different and if you asked to switch seats, I think he should have done it.

Maybe it was the 40's/50's, I have been sitting with them for four years. This was a four year old conversation. They also got recognized on the field two years ago.

I was also at my first Clemson game yesterday. I took my mom who uses a seeing eye dog. A student stepped on the dog's tail while going through the gate and instead of apologizing he just denied it and went on. Children kept coming up and petting the dog ( a no-no for service dogs) and while I politely asked them not to, the parents stayed disengaged. We ended up near the Kent St fans who were very helpful.
Also, the Clemson web site says that the handicapped parking is at the Hendrix Center. This proved to be incorrect, and we kept getting bad directions from the parking lot attendants and crossing guards. Eventually found the spot behind the president's house, but there was no parking available an hour and half before the game. I felt badly,, but I jumped the curb and parked in a natural area. Did not get ticketed.
Does anyone know who to contact at Clemson so that they can correct the web site with the correct parking info?

That stinks but I understand both sides here. Maybe it was the first game they been to in 5 years and were super excited as well.
However, personally my seats are the same and have been for years so I know most of the people around me. They do give their tickets away or bring new people a lot so I always check to see who is behind me. Many times it's a kid or a shorter person, I try to take this into account and find a way to make the experience enjoyable for them as well. Maybe switching seats or just leaning to a certain side so they have a clean view can make a huge difference.
I'm sorry that happened to you and really hate the fact that common curtesy isn't common anymore all over, not just at CU games. I hope your next chance to go is better.

I can see both sides of the stand vs sit debate, but it sounds like the guy in front of you was standing simply to annoy you.
The problem with having a winning team is that it attracts fairweather fans. Not to get into the alum vs non-alum argument, but I can bet good money that he is not a Clemson alum. That's not to say that jerks are always non-alums and that alums are perfect, but overall you aren't going to see a true Clemson man act that way.
I hope you have a better experience next time.
