Woody Dantzler ..... does anyone here remember his

Dec 1, 2022, 5:53 PM

Freshman year? Woody was a great, and I mean great, dual threat QB. I remember his first game with playing time against Furman (I think) where he was put in at the end of the game and ran three QB keepers for maybe 3 yards, if that. He played in 5 games that year (1998) and ran 34 times for 84 yards. He threw 17 times and completed 8 passes. The next three years passed for 1500, 1700, and 2300 yards ..... not eye popping numbers, but very efficient. The next three years he rushed for 588,947, and 1004 yards. There is no one I would have rather had in at the end of a close game than Woody, especially on 3rd or 4th down trying to pick up a few yards.

The point is, that freshman are just not ready to come in a dominate a game like Watson and Lawrence were. We were extremely lucky and those guys are rare, rare, rare. I think to assume that Cade could have taken this team on his back week in and week out is not a fair expectation for him. I wish that we had been in a position to play him a lot more, and I wish that DJ had developed like Woody did over the years. I don't know what the future hold for next year, but hopefully our patience with Cade pays dividends. The dilemma will be with DJ and how he is handled.

I remember Woody well. You are spot on.

I also remember Willie Simmons and how he threw the most beautiful spiral and we couldn't figure out how to get bowden to somehow put them on the field at the same time.

He was also the back up to Brandon streeter.
Oh the irony.

It's really ironic. Until our current QB, we were starting the worst QB in Clemson history statistically. Yet we were sharing time between Woody and Streeter, despite how trash Streeter was. It took Streeter getting hurt for our coach to actually do the right thing.

Y’all can continue to try and sell yourself on this idea that Cade isn’t ready I’m not buying it. Kid played against D1 talent all throughout high school. When allowed has made throws just like DW4 use to, was sold on the two point attempt against Syracuse. Would he be perfect no, but if he would of been given a legitimate chance would’ve grown through the growing pains by now. The kid has been a winner, and will be a winner in college. No way you slice it, it has been a failure on the coaching staff not getting him more experience since his redshirt gone.

What did I say that is not true. I said we can't assume that he could have taken this team on his back. Do you not think DJ played his high school career against D1 talent. Maybe Cade would have excelled, but it is not fair to expect any freshman, even Watson or Lawrence, to carry a team. They were exceptional beyond words ..... like Sammy Watkins ..... but that is three in what 15 years. Yes, there are a few more, but not many. I hope you are right, but we will never know, how good he would have been this year.

PS: I think Cade will be exceptional!

I remember the great TL being in over his head at

Kyle Field. We lose that game with Trevor. We won it with Kelly.

I'm a HUGE TL fan (have his jersey), but even great ones have to be freshmen.

So you think Dabo would risk losing... for what exactly?

Dec 1, 2022, 7:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Woody Dantzler ..... does anyone here remember his ]

Dabo will not hesitate to replace a QB if the next guy gives us a better chance to win. The staff watches every single rep of practice and then of course we have 5 games of film as well. The game film doesn't show a guy ready to start. Not sure what youre using to form an opinion, but it obviously can't be his 5 game body or work.

What would possibly be the prerogative for keeping the best guy on the bench? Sounds like a conspiracy?

Really?? Based on what?

Cade has not gotten to play with starters… by the Miami game he looked so much better than earlier in the year … plus he was quicker in his decision making and execution than DJ in that same game.

I can’t fathom the coaches not thinking, “DJ’s Way off today 8/29 … maybe we should see what Cade can do”. It’s incomprehensible to me.

Would have loved to seen Woody run the offenses of today's game. He was a little bit ahead of his time. Great talent

I’ll never forget the shootout in Atlanta at Grant Field when Joe Hamilton was QB at Georgia Tech. I can remember exactly but Woody had a zillion yards of total offense. What a game.

Woody also played with 2.5 star talent around him at that time.

I don't think we'll ever really know what Cade could have done since he was never given a fair chance. He will start next year
if latest news about DJ's brother and UCLA taking them both as a package is true. That would be good for all concerned.
Otherwise I think Cade hits the portal.

yes, remember him fondly. Guy was a baller for sure. you say his stats weren't great but he was first player to pass for 2k and run for 1k. I always thought he was terribly underappreciated by the press, but it was also a time when we didn't have a whole going for us other than Woody right and Woody left.

Never understood how he didn't make roster for NFL.

Yeah ….. not room for a Jack of all trades in the NFL, unless they do one thing particularly well ……. think the former BYU QB at New Orleans. I think Woody was one of the last players cut. He also didnt have great speed but was crazy shifty and a tough runner.

He made a roster (as a RB), and had one of the best kick returns in NFL history

Sorry I don't buy the analogy...

and nobody thinks Cade would have come in and dominated college football but given are fair shot and time with the 1s he would have lapped DJ's progression as a QB and his 2 year hamstrung command of the offense-
