Last time 3rd seed ACC Tournament did not make NCAAT?

I don't know but I almost bet never but probably max 2 times. Normally a .500 record in ACC puts you in contention. I think we made it with a 9-7 record in ACC and 1-2 wins in the ACCT. ACC has sent 9 teams to the Tourn 2-3 times in the last 10yrs. Obviously 7-8 teams multiple times and the ACC could potentially squeak in 4 teams and potentially only 3.

If that isn't a sign of how far the ACC has fallen then I don't know what is? This doesn't help CBB's case for most ACC wins but we also played more ACC games than any other season. That said, I still feel like we should be a tourney team. I fell like if we play decent we can hang with any school but if we have an off night like we did against Louisville, we could lose by 40 against a good team instead of 20 against a horrible team. That loss to Louisville by 20 just screams coaching error to me!

Let's go get a win in the ACCT and make noise in the March Madness!

Since the field expanded in 1980, I believe 2000 time when #3 UVA was not included, but #4 UNC did go to the Tournament. 1980 was the first tournament to allow an unlimited number of at-large teams from any conference.

At this point all we can do is get ready for the 1st game in Greensboro. Clearly, we have not had a great history in the tournament and have to likely beat, a really good NC State team for the 3rd time this year. The game will have to played on our terms the way it was in Raleigh for us to have a shot and getting some fouls on Burns is crucial.

Exactly. We don’t control the selection process. The best thing we can do is win more games. It’s tournament time and we need to play every game like it’s win or go home.

The rankings have been very suspect this season. So I am 84% sure the Selection Committee will screw many teams out this season. Hopefully College of Charleston win their tourneys and don't have to wait for at large bids. 2024 Season needs to start puting College of Charleston on their schedule since the play Roosters. Clemson should always play top teams in SC. Most of the time C of C better than Roosters on mens side.

We need to recruit a couple of our DLineman over to basketball practice and have them back down on Hall. Shoot, maybe Coach Eason can play a role.

I have hoping Clemson and College of Charleston make the Big Dance. Few years back both made the Big Dance only to be upset game before both Clemson College of Charleston match up. Both games that year had terrible Tar Heel type officials. In my 58 years in the South Clemson basketball never had decent officiating in ACC. I think both College of Charleston and Clemson could make Sweet 16 or one in Elite 8 if met in Sweet 16.

Where are these accounts coming from?

Me and my fat thumbs don’t usually pick on typos, but that was some Chinese to English instruction manual stuff.

I'm also curious if the following has ever happened?

Has an ACC team ever won 14 conference games and 22 regular season games and been left out of the tournament?

Clemson gets a bias benefit in football in rankings but the are recipients of the opposite in basketball. We can't have it all I suppose.

That’s nearly an impossible comparison. The number of teams in the league, number of games and the fact you don’t play everyone twice makes the comparison not valid.

It would really only be relevant to compare the whopping 2 previous seasons that 20 conference games were played .

Ok, well the last time an ACC team won 22 regular season games and was left out of the NCAA tournament?

Either way there's definitely a negative bias evident by the fact Lunardi has the following teams ahead of us and in the tournament despite the fact we are 4-0 against them:
NC State
Pitt
Penn State

Throw in Wisconsin with a record barely above .500 it's just odd.

Without a dominant team it may appear the ACC has fallen, but maybe because of TV money, NIL and other factors, just maybe, a lot of other teams have just gotten better?

Since sports is a meritocracy based on relative skill that would still mean we’ve fallen. But anyone that has watched college basketball more than a decade know the product is markedly worse since the introduction of one and dones.

Well another factor is the shoe money. Once that went away with the FBI probe, the dominant teams like UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, etc. have fallen like lead balloons. When they couldn't get the top 20 players on their team every year it truly leveled the playing field. I think that also ran off the dinosaur's coaches because noe they had to actually recruit and coach vs letting top talent win the games. I do believe that the teams like UNC, Duke, Louisville, etc would be better trams if they had their old coaches, but don't think their dominance would be the same without shoe money getting all the one-dones!

Re: Last time 3rd seed ACC Tournament did not make NCAAT?

Mar 6, 2023, 6:13 PM

THIS cannot be overstated.

The FBI probe documented in clear English that the MBB world has NEVER been a level playing field, and the NCAA was happy with that.

Unfortunately it also forces us to wonder if something similar to “shoe money” exists in the world of CFB….

With a more even playing field we should...

Mar 6, 2023, 7:24 PM

be able to lean on great coaching to go us to the NCAAs now...right?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: With a more even playing field we should...

Mar 6, 2023, 8:02 PM

Glad the playing field is becoming more level in Brownell’s 13th year.

Coaches recruit.

Coaches coach.

Players score points, or not.

Points win games.

Winning games gets us in the NCAAT.

I hope that clears it up for you.
