The playoff picture

Oct 22, 2017, 3:27 AM

First off, Penn State looks for real. Assuming they win out I can’t see them not getting one of 4 spots. They have 2 pretty big games which both happen to be on the road against Mich St and Ohio St. TCU is undefeated and they have Iowa St, Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma. Their game against Oklahoma is on the road and probably their best chance of losing.

In the SEC it looks like Georgia could run the table. This scenario could be an absolute nightmare for us. If they win out and lose the SECCG to Alabama I’m afraid we may get the shaft. We could possibly see a 4 team playoff of Alabama, Georgia, Penn St, and TCU. To be honest it would probably be best to see SC beat Georgia. That would find them plummeting in the polls. Georgia also has to play Auburn. I would rather see Auburn beat Georgia as it would make our win against Auburn look that much better. Now, assuming the SECCG is Bama/UGA, the worst case scenario is for Georgia to win. There’s no way a one loss Bama is left out of the playoffs.

Another team to watch is Notre Dame. If they win out I fear that the lovefest for them will put them in. Let’s hope they lose.

Obviously there are a ton of scenarios I could talk about, but it can get very confusing and possibly turn into a way too long post.

I’ll end with us. We have to win out obviously. If we lose another game all of this is irrelevant. If we win out and win the ACCCG we will have won games against Louisville, Auburn, Virginia Tech, NCST, our in-State rival (always big), and possibly an undefeated Miami. If Miami is undefeated at the ACCCG we could be playing a top 4 team. I also want to add that one of NCST’s games they have remaining is against ND. If they win that game then we don’t have to worry about ND. It will also move NCST further up the polls. Under that scenario, provided we win out, we will have potentially beaten 3 top 15 teams, a top 10 in NCST, and a top 4 team in Miami. If we were to get left out in a nightmare of nightmares, the playoff committee will have left out the reigning National Champions and a team who just went 12-1 while having, IMO, the best resume.

Thoughts and comments? What do you guys think will happen and do you see a scenario where we win out, but are left out of the playoffs?

Very good summary. Thank you. Obviously, the Tigs have to win out for a playoff to even be in the discussion. However, I had not really thought about what that means in terms of SOS if we do win out. The challenge is obvious...we're up for it!!

Go Tigers!

Win and we're in. That's it.

It doesn't matter how everything else plays out. At 12-1 the defending national champion will be in the playoff. Worst case scenario would be a 3 seed playing in the Rose Bowl. I doubt they would have us playing Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

I heard a guy on the radio yesterday say that Clemson would not get in if they won out unless they get a lot of help from other teams getting beat.

ND and TCU are the potential spoilers.***

It will be a helluva a lesson if we win out and don't make it.

Can't take any game for granted. Can only blame ourselves if that happens.

If we win out we are in. We would have played one of the top 3 most difficult schedules. If alabama wins over ga in seccg ga is out. Their SOS not nearly good as ours. Plus we would be conference champs. If alabama loses seccg they are out bc they have yet to play a team that's ranked and only teams on their schedule that's ranked is auburn and ga.
Sec is falling. Media sees it.

Nevermind Penn State, Ohio State and Wisconsin they're fighting for the same spot.

Once TCU gets beat "and they will" the big 12 is done and the Pack 12 is almost done.

Notre Dame will probably lose two more games, if I had to guess Stanford and Miami.

Georgia will lose to Auburn, Georgia Tech and Bama.

This may be the year you get two from the overrated Big 10.

Ohio st and Penn St both ahead us have to play. ND and Miami play. We need Miami to beat ND and then we get an undefeated Miami in ACCCG. However ND has NCSU first and Miami still has VT. UGA still has Auburn and don’t count out GT against them either. I think you can eliminate PAC-12. If TCU runs the table they are probably in. However I think you can eliminate a one loss BIG 12 team as well. That leaves three Power 5 conferences in. Either ND gets in or one conference gets two. I think for us the most important domino that needs to fall is ND losing because if they get in that obviously eliminates two Power 5 champions from being included in the CFP. Very unlikely that all other teams ahead of us now will win out. We win out we should be in. Seeding of course doesn’t matter. Just get in.
