Will Dabo play him?

[2]
Dec 18, 2021, 9:36 PM

If Cade outperforms DJ in camp, does Dabo have the ?? to play him? Clearly Watson and Lawrence were playing much better than Stout and Bryant, respectively, but Dabo was so hesitant to play the new kids..

I finally gave up trying to explain that coaching is Dabo's living and that he got paid to do so, not like some of these clowns who think they know more than he. But alas, I failed-- now you can take over:).

Uh, he replaced Kelly Bryant with TL.

flag link

True but…

[1]
Dec 18, 2021, 10:00 PM

Going into that season he insisted that Bryant was his starter and better at that point in time than TL. Just like he insisted this season that DJ wasn’t bad. The only difference between then and now is he doesn’t have a generational QB to bring in and make everybody forget the screw up at the beginning of the season.

Screw up ? Really?
You mean He started a QB who led them to the playoffs the year before and probably was more prepared at the first of the year How ever He did Give TL an opportunity from the very first game. Then TL took over and won. A national championship.
Please screw up some more Dabo!
You people are idiots!

A lot of you guys are to ####### brainwashed to have a real conversation with.

This is a really good question....Dabo is extremely loyal to players....he knew all to well Watson was a way better player than CS...yet CS kept starting for 3 weeks and possibly cost us the fsu game in 2014 because CS played the first quarter and after Watson got us down the field dabo put cs back in just to watched him turn the ball over in the red zone....

Dabo was also loyal to KB and let him start the season and play with the first team all fall despite knowing Lawrence was the better player....this one I understand more than the CS/Watson

But In both cases the better player didn't start the season at qb or play with first team in the fall....

If CK is the obvious better player.....will dabo break away from what he has done in the past and play CK?

It’s not brainwashed you idiot. That’s why there is no

“conversing” with you.

You are CONVINCED it is blind player loyalty because you have the benefit of hindsight.

AT THE TIME THE DECISION HAD TO BE MADE - WHO HAD THE BEST GRASP OF THE PLAYBOOK AND WHO GAVE US THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN AND WERE THE NEWBIES READY TO FACE ADVERSITY AND NOT HAVE IT DISCOURAGE THEM IN THEIR LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT ?

Seriously - it’s not that hard to understand.

And typing all this out is a total waste because you KNOW that it is nothing more than blind player loyalty. I feel 100% the opposite way - it is a careful decision based on a LOT of pieces and NONE of those pieces is “loyalty”.

day.

Kelly Bryant could not throw a forward pass in the 2017 game with Bama. We lost because KB could not complete a pass and hold a sustained drive .

Well, in 2018 Trevor Lawrence was being called the best freshman QB they have seen when he passed for 347 yards passing, with 3 TD's and no ints. The ESPN crew said he was the best freshman QB college football.

Clemson beat Bama 44-16 that night, the worst beating Saban has taken since coming to Bama.

We lose that A&M game without Bryant, probably. The main difference now is that Dabo has to handle this to try to keep both players on the roster. Yes, I know Bryant transferred, but the portal is much more common now and making Cade the starter would likely immediately send DJ headed for the portal.

I recall the scenario with Bryant being more of surprise, whereas DJ would most likely bounce if Cade gets a start. Not a shot at DJ, most kids now will do the same thing.

round.

Bryant could not run or throw the ball against Bama in 2017 . The very next year Trevor was the QB in the 2018 CFP Playoff Final and he was fantastic against Bama. Shoot, the ESPN crew kept saying Trevor could be a first round NFL pick as a freshman. With Trevor as the QB, Clemson beat Bama 44-16, the worst loss Bama has had with Saban as the HC.

I was fired up after just finishing a YouTube show that was just bashing Dabo. They were calling him a liar and other nasty comments for about 15 minutes. Those guys are nothing but SEC jerks.

Anyway, please accept my apology!

Watson freshman year after watching Watson play 1 series of downs against GA it was clear to me and everyone else that Watson was Extremely more talented and the better player than CS....not a single soul watching that game couldn't see how much better Watson was than CS.....

So you mean to tell me that Dabo Swinney as great of a football mind as he is couldn't see through 6 weeks of practice what common fans could see in 2 minutes?.....That's simply not realistic...Dabo knew Watson was the best player, yet he still started CS for 3 weeks....he still let CS start against fsu and come in the game in the red zone after Watson marched us down the field....I LOVE DABO FOR HIS LOYALTY...I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT DABO SWINNEY....but let's not act like he's perfect and we can't discuss things he's done wrong...it's nothing wrong with having discussions....

I definitely could see The freshman being the best player but not hitting the field right away.....

I trust dabo...but it's worth the discussions

I was very outspoken at the time that I thought Dabo and Co were doing a great job with the KB/TL transition. Wouldn’t mind seeing a repeat of 2019. We really don’t know if CK is ready. He had 280 yards passing yesterday and 236 went to one receiver. Is he really that good or does he have fantastic receivers making him look even better than he really is? Dabo and his staff will get to figure out in the spring and fall if he is ready and I trust their judgment.

Stoudt may have cost us the FSU game but KB won us the A&M game. TL had the big pass to Tee and besides that he looked overwhelmed. I think keeping DW in against UGA could have changes that game as well but who knows.

In two or three games he will take the starter's position.

DJ will react like KB did when he lost his job. Reality will slap him square in the face. I wouldn't be surprised to see him enter the portal.

The line isn't the problem everyone seems to say it is.

Shipley finished the season averaging 5.2 yards per carry
Pace 6.3 yards per carry

It's the QB play that was absolutely awful. DJ is rated 120 out of 126 and he is so bad his advanced stats show him averaging negative points added to the team per pass attempt. We literally are a better offense with zero pass attempts.

If DJ plays like he did this year with no improvement then yes. Dabo might give DJ the 1st game start but thats it.

Re: Will Dabo play him?

Dec 19, 2021, 9:43 AM

I think it will be more of should he play him from a physical stand point. He will no doubt come in and wow the coaches and team with accuracy and decision making, but if he doesn’t add at least 20 lb between now and the start of the season the coaches could be worried about his safety and health long term. He’s rail thin right now and needs power hour, if he had our O line this year he wouldn’t have played more than 2 games, probably had a season ending injury. If he’s physically ready no doubt he will play if he’s better, but there is more to it than is he “better”.

flag link

Re: Will Dabo play him?

Dec 19, 2021, 11:13 AM

There’s more to playing than ability. Yes, he’ll get snaps. No, he probably won’t start. Much depends on his acumen, memory, and toughness. In Dabo we trust.

DJ will start game 1 of the season, his performance during the off season and the first game will determine how long he stays QB1, the question is what if he lights it up during the season like the ND/BC games his freshman year, he won't get drafted early so he would stay another year, does Cade sit for two years then?
