Why would UNC decline to play NIT?

2

Mar 13, 2023, 2:15 AM

Are they too embarrassed to play there which gives them extra coaching and play time for their young players?

I guess when this is the first time UNC missed the dance for 30-40yrs, i guess the NIT is a slap. The last time not in NCAAT was either 1985 or 1995, I forget actually, but it was a long time ago. But why not play NIT?

I think the conference should make schools play in tournaments and bowls as they are a source of income and exposure for the conference. If schools decline opportunities to make money then it costs all schools in the conference. I wouldn't let schools decline money opportunities if I managed the conference.

Not sure what real money is to be made playing in the NIT. You need eyeballs watching the games and if your team is not playing who really cares about watching. Maybe the home teams can make a little extra cash but eventually you will have travel expenses. Not a lot to gain but more practice imo.

They don’t have a goal to make the NCAA tournament. They have a goal to win the NCAA tournament. Their minimum expectation is to be in it to have a chance to win it. The NIT is a waste of time nowadays.

IMO we we screwed once again by the NCAA. It doesn’t matter if it’s football, basketball, baseball, women’s sports those NC schools do not like it when Clemson is successful. The NCAA Tournament boneheads put in NC State a team we blasted 3 times. They even put UNC ahead of us in the 4 teams that almost made it. Another slap in the face from the teams that run the ACC. UNC , Duke and NC ST. Especially in basketball. Swofford sold Clemson out years ago. Sometimes I wonder if some of our AD’s let it happen. Mainly in basketball.

There are steps Clemson can take to improve. But we have been playing catch up with UNC , Duke and NC State since the ACC became a conference.

I was speaking for UNC, multiple time national champion. I imagine Duke or Kansas would opt out as well. I do remember beating Kentucky in the NIT but I don’t know if they would want to be in it anymore.

I’m not sure, short of winning it, what our upside this year is. If we lose in the first or second rounds I think it diminishes the really good regular season we had. On the other hand we need to go deep against lesser teams to erase some of the nonsense we have seen vs those types this year.

I'm all for what UNC did. The NIT is a joke. Not much different than a Duke's Mayo Bowl or a mid-December trip to Shreveport. We can talk about the chance to get players more playing time, but that's a crock. The NIT only solidifies the 69th-best team. That's it. It's completely and utterly meaningless.

If anything, let the NIT become a mid-major only tourney. For Power 5 schools, making the NIT is an embarrassment and just proof that you didn't meet your goals.

I get the disappointment of not making the NCAA Tournament. I mean, we all joke that NIT stands for Not In the Tournament.

But it always has a decent field - one that is better than ever now. A lot of bubble teams that are pretty good (like us) and a lot of schools from small conferences that are also good, but didn't make it because their conferences will never get more than a single bid.

I'm disappointed we didn't make the Big Dance (and I sure didn't expect NCSU to be there), but we need to play in the NIT, build for the future. If we won the thing, it would be a great way to keep up the momentum for next season.

I would say the same thing for UNC. And as much as Hubert Davis seems to be a good guy and was a popular choice to be UNC head coach, I think the decision to not play reflects a major leadership failure from him.

Re: Why would UNC decline to play NIT?

Mar 13, 2023, 1:58 PM

I am not sure when it changed but The NIT use to be the big tournament and the NCAA was what the NIT has become. Playing additional games and extra practice can only help the team get ready for next season.

The NIT is no more irrelevant than adding more teams to the CFP’s or pro sports leagues adding more wild card teams. The more teams you add the more you water down the competition. Personally I would like for things to go back when teams had to really earn their way into playoffs or tournaments.

I don’t know what the NIT pays out or how it pays out. If Clemson is in then as a diehard Clemson fan I am going to watch the games they are in and pull hard for the Tigers to win.

My opinion is still the same. UNC should have to pay a fine for costing the ACC much needed revenue.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure why you're missing this....

Mar 13, 2023, 2:57 PM

NIT is bush league, consolation, for a program like Carolina. Do you really think penny-anny revenue from this tourney is a motivation factor for THE Uof NC, great history basketball program with many titles and huge revenue streams? There is NO exposure for UNC in this either, it's more of embarrassment exposure on TV. I admire them for doing the right thing and declining, their image is too big for this. Movie stars do the same thing, they don't take light roles that would detract from their brand.

In fact, Clemson should turn down the tourney too, but we are too small and pathetic a program to do such a thing, with so little history that matters. It would be a bold statement on our part to decline, but we've accepted mediocrity so we will play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not sure why you're missing this....

Mar 13, 2023, 3:12 PM

It was alluded to that they may be having some challenges in the locker room and perhaps more going on than is being shared. I honestly think they didn't want to expose themselves to another loss unless they felt they were going to really give it 100%. This season was already embarrassing enough for them, particularly when you were a finalist the previous year and pre-season #1.

I would have respected them a lot more if they just came out and said something like, "this season was a challenge and quite disappointing on a number of fronts. Rather than take up an NIT invitation, we'd rather see it go to someone more deserving and motivated to put forth their best efforts. Our intent is to refocus and prepare for the season ahead and we wish the best of luck to the NIT and all of its participants."

UNC is basketball royalty and a program looked up to by nearly everyone. I think that mantle of leadership carries with it a little extra responsibility to lead by example.

The players decided. The same ones taking bad shots and not covering. Worst case Coach Davis should have at least accepted the NIT BID to play the bench some. They didn't get hosed by the COMMITTEE like Clemson did. Trimble and Nickel could really use minutes for development. But the game doesn't fit the old rules and character matters less every year.
