Why the H-E-double-L did UNC agree to play AT

Sep 3, 2022, 10:22 PM

Appalachian State and AT Georgia St. Just goes to show you the worth of their brand or lack thereof

group of 5 schools are willing to give you 2 home games

Sep 3, 2022, 10:26 PM

for you to come to them for 1 game. Not a bad deal.

I don’t see us playing at Georgia state or at Appalachian state

Sep 3, 2022, 10:30 PM

But then maybe that’s one of the reasons we aren’t playing them . . . Guess we did at home in ‘14

I could see Coastal if they make their stadium bigger

Sep 3, 2022, 10:32 PM

I doubt they'd go out of state. Just like VT going to ODU and UNC going to APP State. The one where Missouri went to Wyoming didn't make any sense to me.

No way we would travel to Coastal any time soon.

Sep 4, 2022, 9:56 AM

We only travel to P5 schools.

Look at our schedule the last 25 years.

Money of course.

Give them a home game and you don’t have to pay them a ton to come to your house for the return game(s).

2 for 1 deals

Sep 3, 2022, 10:41 PM

all about the $$$

Clemson gets G5 teams to visit every year without ever needing to return a visit. Not 2 for 1 but 1 for 0.

It’s a bad look for a big boy program to travel to these smaller stadiums.

You really think it made that much of a difference? I don't. No "good" defense played in that game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No I don’t they played terrible. I just didn’t realize schools that

Size go to these smaller schools. Not so much about how they played or home field advantage etc. just surprised to see UNC playing at Georgia state next weekend. I see the money aspect, didn’t realize they didn’t have the large payout if they did 2 and 1, but again to me says something about the brand. You don’t see us traveling to schools that size and you didn’t see the sec schools traveling. I don’t know about Vanderbilt and schools like that bc I didn’t pay attention.

VT and UNC make Power 5 money compared to the Group of Five. Why the heck do they need a good deal? They make 4x or 5x times matbe more the amount the G5 conferences bring in. They can afford to pay these schools a nice pay check to come to their place.

Well in the case of UNC, they don’t exactly fill their stadium unless they are playing Clemson or there’s a basketball scrimmage to head off to during the 3rd quarter.

True but what do the Sunbelt schools get in conference payout every year? Probably no more than a few million. The ACC (as low as their payout will be compared to the B1G) still brings in much more. UNC isn't broke or have to be so cheap they need 2 for 1 deals. They can afford to pay those guys to come to Keenan.

You keep saying “schools that size”. ECU has a larger enrollment than Clemson and App State has a larger enrollment than Clemson did when I was there in the early 2000s. These are not small schools.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fair point again I’m focused on the brand or historical success or whatever

Sep 4, 2022, 8:49 AM

Again we don’t travel to these schools

UofSC had a game scheduled in Boone in 2025 but recently restructured the contract and will pay App $1.95 mil each year to come to COlumbia for that game and the 2027 game. SCar will go to Boone in 2033.

South Carolina’s brand isn’t real strong but obviously they are sec.

Sep 4, 2022, 9:08 AM

Maybe this is becoming more of a thing if these schools are banding together so to speak to insist on this sort of arrangement. I just didn’t realize it was a thing and for UNC to travel to app st one week and Georgia state the next just seems odd to me

I think the GaSt game is an attempt to get more exposure in the Atlanta area.

Also, these money games are basically sharing the gate revenue, right? So yes UNC is making ACC media rights money but probably losing money on that home game ticket revenue when they guarantee $1 million plus to the G5 team. Since these are in-state games, the few UNC football faithful probably still travel like we do for a game at Wake. Why NCSt is doing it is a mystery. Probably some in-state politics are motivating it.
