Why has Dutch Fork had so much success recently?

Nov 23, 2021, 6:17 PM

60+ wins in a row

Going for 6 straight state championships

I’ve been away from the state for a while. Wondering why they’ve been so dominant?

Thanks in advance

Go Tigers! ?????

That’s one way to do it. Lol

Still curious about how they’re actually doing it though

Meh, if you coach for 80 ####### years, you should win a lot of games. He was a good coach, but was pretty mediocre for the last 20 years of his career. I still consider the best three high school coaches in SC history are Bentley, Babb, and Varner, probably in that order. Bentley had the right strategy for dominance in coaching. National recruiting (which was sketchy, but legal, and worked) as well as bringing in kids from around the area and giving pee wee coaches his plays, so kids grow up running their plays. I think those were the most dominant teams in SC history.

"Recruiting" is not pure high school football

Nov 23, 2021, 8:32 PM

since most high schools don't do it. So I agree with you on Pinky Babb and Willie Varner and maybe add Keith Richardson at Clinton, Dave Gutshall at Dorman, and Bill Isaacs at Pickens

Are you old enough to remember Mooney Player at Lower Richland? Couldn’t say his overall record but his teams were really good and he was nuts with crazy plays. Great fun!

Because they hired Tom Knotts as head coach about 8 years ago. He did the same thing in North Carolina.

Mooney Player started high school recruiting in the 60's at Lower Richland High. McKissick was able to use all of the talent in the Summerville area but, more importantly, all of the talent at Charleston Air Force Base which was considerable. Years later when the students associated with the air base was assigned a different high school, Summerville's dominance began to wane.

Tom Knotts coached at Independence High in Charlotte for years and at one time had 109 straight wins. His best QB was Chris Leak who went to Univ of Florida. Knots was investigated for recruiting outside of his district and ended up moving to Dutch Fork HS. I went to several Independence games when Leak was the QB. Excellent teams. I’m surprised Knotts isn’t a college assistant coach.

Tom moved to SC as he already had vested for NC state retirement system. So he is drawing his NC state retirement while making over $100,000 at DF. It was mainly a financial decision (duke grad knows how to do math) and I always here these things about his time at Independence but have never seen one documented fact. He had an altercation with a crazy parent once that got him in some trouble but that about it.

He is great leader and I suggest before judging the man go up to Liberty on the Lake Murray where he often hangs out for a cold one during off season and meet him. Mans man and great guy. One of best things every happened to my son growing into a great young man was playing for Tom Knotts …..

I've also been away, but I do think it's also a function of the traditional powers being down. For about 25 years, the only teams that meant anything were Byrnes, Gaffney, Greenwood, and Dorman. Summerville and Conway would do okay in the playoffs before meeting one of them. They're still okay, but they've dropped off tremendously, leaving a huge gap in the traditional power structure. I also think SC high school football has dropped off. It seemed like a bunch of those older teams were loaded with talent. I remember watching Byrnes-Greenwood back in 2006 and there were like 9 players who would eventually make it to the NFL in some capacity. Dutch Fork dominates the state, but doesn't really play nationally like those did nor produce a ton of talent (I do think Rhames is a pretty good defensive end).

Ask any knowledgeable fan in the Charlotte area who the most despised coach in the past 25 years has been. Kids from all over the area could become eligible at Independence High, where he did the same thing as DF...joke was he set up a trailer park near the school to serve as dormitories for his players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tom Knotts

Nov 23, 2021, 8:37 PM

My son was in 3 state title teams at DF and just finished this season as the leader in tackles for Furman.
The whole recruiting thing is not true. We lost more players to other schools who could not crack the DF starting line-up. I remember one player who transferred in for the 3 years my son was on varsity. A QB did transfer in this year and he didn’t even start

The academic stuff is not true either. Bryce Thompson actually failed out of DF and had to go the Ben Lippen, where he somehow became eligible and then came back the DF for his senior year

Go to a DF practice and you will see why. It is the most organized, attention to detail, demanding perfection I have seen in any organization. That includes 28 years in the Army. And yes the talent is amazing …..

Coach Knotts is the best play caller I have seen at any level. Just always one step ahead. He plays the tough guy but is a Duke grad, as was his dad and several uncles who all played at Duke.

I have listened to all this “rumors” about the Independence days and is he tough, etc yes ….but all these allegations about rouge programs is just BS. It’s kind of like any dynasty team ….. haters going to hate. Kind of like what has happened to our Tigers. We and Dabo were the darlings for awhile but now haters look for any chance to tear down Dabo

I know Tom Knotts well and he has been nothing but first class and been a incredible influence in the lives of 100s of young men. When my son got to Furman the coaches commented how it was obvious the coaching he had received at DF. He came in much more prepared than many other players.

You are correct, especially this year not so much in previous years. When we played Mallard Creek a few years ago (Trenton Simpson ) was their running back Dutch Fork looked small compared to mallard creek but Coach Knotts just one step ahead in playing calling to keep us in game (ended in the one tie)

Tom knotts. Both my kids graduated from DF during his time there and he lived in our neighborhood. He’s one tough bird. Has nothing to do with the area. DF covers the same neighborhoods when they sucked before he got there. It’s all him.

No they didn’t. I know will and his dad very well. Coach Knotts wife works for Eddie ( Will’s dad). Coach Knotts always said he be glad to have him and he could come compete for a job. At first is was at safety because Ty Olenchuk was firmly established at QB. Eddie felt like Will needed to play 5A football to show colleges what he could do against the “big boys” not SCISA competition.
