Why does it matter if you dont intercept passes

Feb 24, 2016, 12:09 AM

but you knock the ball away on almost every single play? cant understand the criticism of Mackensie Alexander for not having an interception.

hes gonna lock up the other teams best receiver, hes gonna knock down every ball thrown his way, and he isnt afraid to come up and lay a hit in run support.

i guess what im trying to say is he does his job on every single play. cant believe a Clemson "fan" was arguing against Mackensie earlier for not having interceptions and saying it is a cause for concern

IMHO, both the NFL and the NCAA prefer higher scoring games at the expense of a defensively dominant performance, This means "take-aways" are paramount, i.e.: let the guy gain another 10-12 yds. while trying to strip the ball instead of simply tackling him. Ray Nitschke is rolling in his grave....

Go Tigers!!!

I don't think anyone is arguing the ability to defend the pass. There was a few times he was in a good position to pick it off, but instead just defended it. If you can get the turnover on first down at their 40 vs a punt starting at your 20, why not?

Here...read this old write up about Sherman vs Patrick...talks about both coverage skills and ball skills:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000210484/article/richard-sherman-vs-patrick-peterson-superior-nfl-cornerback

"Thanks to the proliferation of the passing game in the NFL, it is imperative to have defenders in the secondary who can deliver takeaways."
"In a game that is routinely decided by turnovers, the fact that Sherman rarely drops a potential pick is significant. Considering that Sherman has recorded 12 interceptions, 41 pass breakups and four forced fumbles in his career, it is easy to see why he has entered the conversation as one of the best cover corners in the NFL."
