Why does everyone assume we're headed to the $EC?

2

Apr 27, 2023, 9:41 AM

That DavidHood® feller sort of implied that a re-negotiation of the revenue share was about to go down, but I didn't hear him say anything about us joining the "it just means moar" conference.

re-negotiation of revenue is not a long term solution. Giving less money to teams will only make them less competitive nationally long term and bring down the conference even further. It just buys the ACC more time for them to figure out another solution and delays our departure, but it does not prevent it.

Well, DavidHood® already said what you just poasted.........he didn't believe the ACC could pony up enough cash for us to stay.

solution - just ask the big 12 - giving more to Texas and Oklahoma didn’t offer stability - the only solution is to leave

If I read everything correctly, if 8 teams leave the ACC, the Bill of Rights no longer applies. Should we add 4 more teams to that 8, we have a new conference. Add Penn. St., Baylor, Okla. St., West Virginia or Texas Tech. What say you.

Why would Penn St leave the Big10? Why would Baylor and OSU want to join up with a bunch of East Coast teams?

What TV deal is on the table and how much more lucrative is it than the current ACC deal?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why does everyone assume we're headed to the $EC?

Apr 27, 2023, 1:10 PM

Its funny when people just pick a team like Penn St and assume they would join. Its like saying lets get LSU or Auburn. Penn St aint leaving the B1G for the ACC. And all the teams left in the Big 12 bring few dollars and few eyeballs. There is a reason that conference is safe. Its good enough to be a power conference, but no school adds any real value. I think not having OK and Texas dooms them. The Big 12 is not much without them.

I know, this is ridiculous. Everyone should be focused on the ACC adding Alabama or Ohio State. That's how we get a better TV deal. Duh.

Your premise that everyone assumes we are headed to the SEC is blatantly untrue. Most are undecided on where we will land as there is simply not enough info to make an informed decision. My guess is we would be Big10 bound but who knows. The possibilities are Big10, SEC or other. I would assume that we would not jump ship without a landing spot but at this point who knows what discussions have taken place.

If I were the BIG I would make a move for Clemson-UNC-Miami-FSU. It would raid the SEC footprint and help their recruiting in the south which has so much talent. It would also help FOX grab some ESPN teams. Of course that does not explain how we get out of GOR.

At first I thought the SEC was the best for Clemson but now I'm leaning toward the B1G. I know when Clemson plays UofSC or a game here are there against other SEC opponents, the Tigers are contributing a small amount to the SEC coffers.

A conference schedule and post season full of games and the associated revenue being split with UofSC and other (not so liked SEC schools) just doesn't sit well with me. I know the same can be said about a couple of the B1G schools too.

The other part for me is that Stankey and the rest of the SEC just feels "dirty" for some reason. Kind of like there's a dead body in the closet but you can't get the door open to prove it.

Unequal revenue sharing wont work

1

Apr 27, 2023, 11:52 AM

Youd have to give half the league literally 0 dollars for any sort of unequal revenue plan to close the gap significantly on the SEC and BIG. No way the rest of the league agrees to that lol.

As for the SEC, its realistically the only league that makes logical sense. That said, Id take the bIG over staying in the ACC.

They said that if Clemson stayed in ACC thru 2036 they would bring in $800000000 less tha SEC team and 1 billion less than Big 10 team. Cannot overcome that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Unequal revenue sharing wont work

Apr 27, 2023, 3:18 PM

Right now the ACC makes over $500 million annually. As I posted something simular a while back, boot ND out unless they join football and bring their NBC revenue which would change the $s some. Pay based on football performance because that's where the real money comes from.

The below is based on ND being out and annual ACC revenue at $540M:

ACC Conference Champion - $85M
ACC Runner-up - $70M
ACC 3rd - $50M
ACC 4th - 8th place - $40M each ($200M)
ACC 9th - 11th - $30M each ($90M)
ACC 12th - 14th - $15M ($45M)

If it takes 8 teams to vote to dissolve the ACC and "kill" the GOR deal, why not 8 schools voting to pass this?

Youd have to win the league every year

Apr 27, 2023, 3:39 PM

Otherwise youd still be well behind the SEC and BIG.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Youd have to win the league every year

Apr 27, 2023, 4:09 PM

That is true or be 2nd to stay relative. However, when the lower tier schools start improving to get to the next level and higher pay outs, the games and competition will be better and revenue should increase.

If things have to change within the next 2 - 4 years, I say do what it takes to get to the B1G.

Can you imagine the ACC ref bias towards the tar heels (and other NC schools to a lesser extent) for games that made that much difference in payout?

Cause unless that negotiations guarantees Clemson and fsu to what sec team get in tv deals….. no deal….. no way the ACC let’s two team get all the money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here is the problem the ACC faces...

Apr 27, 2023, 1:15 PM

The league handcuffed itself and the member institutions with the unbelievably foolish and inequitable GOR Agreement. Because of that, they have placed the member schools in an unenviable and impaired position, and the league doesn't have the financial resources or bargaining power to recover from it. Consequently, the league members are now left with little choice, either individually or collectively (as the case may be), but to pursue other more stable and level/equitable options.

Re: Why does everyone assume we're headed to the $EC?

Apr 27, 2023, 3:48 PM

I could get used to a schedule like this:
  • Georgia
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Georgia Tech
  • Tennessee
  • Florida State
  • Florida
  • Kentucky
  • Vanderbilt
  • one team (or two) from SEC West on a rotating basis (send Mizzou to the West for geography)
  • would be nice to try to play somebody from the old ACC for nostalgia, maybe rotating
  • schedule home-and-homes with a B1G school, even like a UCLA or USC
  • one warmup game but against a FBS team like UCF, LaTech, Marshall, etc. (no FCS teams)
The common critique is that "Clemson would never survive a SEC schedule." I seem to recall our teams getting up for SEC games and competing just fine most of the time, winning more than losing but even being competitive in our losses. Why would that change? With the SEC brand on our jerseys, we just became a more credible football school. Recruiting gets better. TV money gets better. We become even better than we are right now. What's not to love?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s definitely going to be the Sec

Apr 28, 2023, 1:32 PM

The Clemson board will want to keep our southern roots of playing in the Southern conferences.
The recruiting footprint in the south is better and the SEC will help us recruit better in the south to compete with Florida, FSU, UGA & Alabama too.
Our football coaches have come from Alabama, most of our players from the south too.
It will be a done deal in the SEC, but we have played both sides to get the best deal.
It’s coming soon unless something big happens soon and it could with the battle between Good & Evil in our world.

Let's think outside the box for a minute. Instead of joining an old conference, let's make a new one. The Big 10 and the SEC have a solid core of 4 to 6 teams. Let's start with our core teams. I would start with FSU, CU, NDU, and OKSTATE. For the next level we would have to rob teams, say Nebraska, UNC, VTECH, PSU, and Pitt. If we got most of these teams, we would get plenty of offers from other teams to join our conference.
