Why does Dabo and the staff like to give scholarships...

Dec 21, 2021, 8:30 PM

To walk-ons to fill the roster up when the portal is an option? Hope the new cordinators convince him to rethink that...

Why did UNCheat get blown out by Kentucky ?

.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So the answer is?

Dec 21, 2021, 8:45 PM

Dabo had a bad moment just like the Holes had a bad game??

Is UNCheat ranked ?

Do they miss Deputy Dog that much ?

But there aren't too many Renfros out there. It's like hitting lightning in a bottle...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wouldn’t that be the case for anyone?

Dec 21, 2021, 10:19 PM

Who’s to say they are gonna be any good bc they are in the portal? Kind of like hiring a big name coach only to fire them 3 yrs later bc they don’t meet expectations. Brownell has hit the portal pretty hard, how’s that working out?

I have never seen you post one thing positive about Clemson. Always questioning the way Dabo handles his team. If you don’t like it cheer for UNC.

Dec 21, 2021, 9:04 PM

Dabo is great! Best coach in the country. But a few have said why he chooses more walk on then portal players to fill the roster.

Do you think the new cordinators might have a voice in his ear to get some transfers...?

Mainly because Dabo knows exactly what to do in these recruiting situations.

So what works for Bama and other teams sprinking in portal players is not a good culture fit for Clemson? We will see how things change but I'll take your word for it now...

Dec 21, 2021, 9:09 PM

Of course I don't have the 'inside Dabo's brain' perspective, but this is what is seems to me.

Dabo can induce a bunch of really high quality walk-ons (who are usually smaller guys who can turn into nickel backs / defensive backs / wide receivers). These walk-ons are essentially auditioning for a scholarship position; their 'hit rate' is small but those who 'hit' are sometimes major contributors (Will Taylor / Hunter Renfrow / Jake Venables / Tyler Venables / numerous kickers & punters over the years).

The proof that Dabo gives walk-ons a real chance at earning playing time and for earning a scholarship becomes 'common knowledge' among HS coaches. For those physically-not-yet-developed HS players that can't get a scholarship offer to the 'big schools,' Clemson offers those players a legit chance.

The calculation is that regularly granting a few scholarships to high-quality walk-ons and building a reputation that Clemson is THE DESTINATION for such high-quality walk-ons is worth sacrificing one or two scholarships to 'higher profile' players that Rivals or 247 Sports thinks are great, but that Dabo doesn't see as being highly likely of fitting into the Clemson culture. The walk-ons go through a lengthy audition process in order to compete for a scholarship, whereas the 'higher profile' players get scholarships based on his HS film or via very brief audition at a summer FB camp.

Which would you (or me) prefer ... lengthy auditions or review of HS film? (Of course, this is a rhetorical question.)

Inarguably, Dabo's strategy with regard to granting scholarships to walk-ons has been enormously successful as a component of the Clemson football team. (Of course, his ability to find HS superstuds that fit the Clemson culture and who will come to Clemson instead of going to Bama or UGA or OH State also has something to do with Clemson's FB success.)

Great explanation! It also is a big part of where Dabo came from. He was a walk-on...

Just a guess- but maybe the coaches think that after watching and comparing the walk-on and knowing what he can do - is a better player and help to Clemson football - than an unknown player that they have looked at and decided not worthy of an offer.
Just a guess though.

I see a lot of unintelligent responses. Before I even answer this dumb of a question you have to post proof that Dabo gives more walk-ons scholarships than any other team out there. Most teams hang around that 85 number but can have around 120 on the team so that means a team can have up to 35 or 40 walk-ons. A lot of those guys bust their rear end for every team which is why you see social media post from team accounts that show the team going crazy when one of those said walk-ons finally receive a scholarship. EVERY team puts multiple guys on scholarship during the spring and summer not just Clemson but you seem to think it's just Clemson bc you follow them every day. I assure you that you're completely WRONG.

Re: Why does Dabo and the staff like to give scholarships...

Dec 21, 2021, 11:50 PM

You're right, other teams do it, too. The Burlsworth Award is given every year to the best player who began his career as a walk-on; if Dabo were the only coach giving scholarships to walk-ons who later proved their value, Clemson players would be the only ones winning the Burlsworth. We're certainly not.

But you're also wrong, because Dabo's emphasis IS unusual. He has said repeatedly that it's all about culture. Coach McDaniel actually tweeted about this recently, saying that the Clemson staff doesn't have near as much interest in players who only have 1 or 2 years of eligibility left, as they do in HS students that you can grow, teach and train to be men.

If you think about it, the transfer portal is about the same as the Junior College system. The list of coaches who depended on JuCo transfers was a pretty solid reason NOT to. But now that you have more gold nuggets in the transfer portal (the JuCo system generally was used by late bloomers, scholastically challenged or behavioral cast-offs like Chad Kelly or Randy Moss), Dabo has said he and the staff will look into it more.

But I'm sure their priority will still be growing puppies into Big Dogs. That's why they coach. Winning games is the bonus part of the job for Dabo.

lived long enough to see a coach named Dabo Swinney provide leadership, resulting in TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, not to mention other lesser titles...something I thought I'd never see again after the 1981 title.

I don't give a hoot in he1l if Dabo Swinney wants to hand out scholarships to boars with hind t*ts for two reasons: I am dammm proud of what that man has accomplished for Clemson, and I think he is smart enough to remain very judicial with his scholarships, more than likely, giving them to fellows he believes are worthy and demonstrating upfront dedication via their walk-on status. In other words I'd take a person showing loyalty though he might be a diamond in the rough over a ship-bailer layered in gold dust ALL DAY LONG.

Just call my thinking old-fashioned, if you will, but that's my beliefs, and I'm sticking to them. By the way best wishes to you.

I’m all for trying to use the transfer portal to fill some needs, but we don’t have to go overboard on it/sell Clemson’s soul to use it.
