Why do we let our slowest WR return punts

Aug 31, 2014, 1:05 PM

run sweeps, and catch screen passes? Isnt the point of the spread to get the ball into the hands of fast playmakers? Let the speedsters do what they do and let him block for them cause he does one heckuva job of it(see the past few years blocking for Sammy).

100% agree

Humphries is probably one of the better BLOCKING wideouts but has no business running a jet sweep

Seems like the coaches are very content with just catching a punt (i.e Humphries) vs turning it upfield to try to break one. Given how limited the offense is going to be, every last yard counts.

UGA puts Gurley back there and we have Humphries, CJ Davidson, and TJ Green.

TJ Green may have something, but I'd like to see M Alexander, G Hopper, and Artav. Scott get a look.

I truly believe that they utilize him as much as they do becasue he is white and dabo has a man crush on him... There is absolutely no reason he should be returning punts... Why we are on the subject, why the hell is Howard even on the team!!!

I know we are all mad here today, and rightly so, but do you really believe AH is on the field because he is white? Come on man, that is just ridiculous.

Just guessing here, but it is probably that the coaches believe he has the best hands, and because our offense is typically able to burn the other team up. Likely, We were more concerned about making sure we are getting possessions and not turning the ball over when receiving punts than getting an extra 10 yards or so on the return.

That I can see

but running sweeps and catching screens? Absolutely no excuse or reasoning!

As the coach has said, if we don't get the ball out beyond the 25 yard line. The play calling becomes very vanilla and we end up being Stuck in place and can't get out. But I did watch games yesterday where teams are pinned back at the 1 yard line, and marching the ball 99 yards for a TD. We need to use those type plays to unstuck us when we are on the 10.

i assume he returns punts because he's more sure handed than anybody else, and the coaching staff obviously doesn't care a lick about working on special teams.

There were some of the players playing in positions that I thought were playing in those positions only b/c of senior endowment just like Humphies, Howard, and Cole even though I think that Cole can lead the team. But how many times did we ever see Tajh Boyd make the 3d base slide when there were more positive yards that could be gained at the end of the run. There were a couple of times that Cole performed his slide when he could have run over the defender for 4/5 more yards.

Because our experience with our fastest WR catching punts

Probably because our slowest WR has the best hamds

Aug 31, 2014, 1:45 PM

I agree though on the sweeps. But you need good hands to field punts and catch screen passes. Doesn't matter how fast you are if you muff a punt.

who knows how these kids are doing in practice, but seems AH experiment has run it's course. CJ , Sammy, Nuk, etc they all dropped punts every so often, but they more than made up for it with game changing plays. AH has fumbled in the past, but doesn't give you game changing plays.

The entire special teams was bad. 10 points alone on missed FG, Gurley KO return. Poor punting when pinned deep. Just not good enough offensive team to give up points / yards due to mental errors on ST.
