Why Do Folks Assume That Just Because a Kicker Goes Down

There is not a viable back-up? Just like any other position a trained and prepared player will play Saturday. Will there be a drop-off in talent and experience? very likely yes.
But, Dabo and the coaches have built an all-encompassing process and system that touches everything in the program down to the water boys and even inclusion of special needs Tiger fans. The PK and KO kicker are included in this process and will be prepared. Dabo is building this program right, I highly doubt the cabinet is empty at Kicker.

People will freak out if any starter gets hurt.
Heck, some will freak out if the 3rd string water girl gets hurt.

I'm not overly concerned about Spence taking over for Huegel. I am a whole lot concerned about the timing of the opening kick coinciding with the cannon shot. I would sure hate to get an illegal procedure penalty and give Boston College 5 more yards.

I would guess because one insider called it a "top 5 catastrophic injury" based on the lack of depth at position for this team. Just because there is a backup listed on the roster, doesn't mean he's going to immediately inspire confidence!

I think people get freaked out because of the horrendous kickers we had in the early 2000's. At least I do.

we would never make another field goal or PAT, and that we'd have to try an onside for every kickoff.

Or just kick it immediately out of bounds and give it to them on the 35 every kickoff.

Most fans assume that a guy is the starter for a reason and

that if he goes down the next guy in line may not be quite as good as the starter.
It doesn't mean that the next guy can't get the job done, but there is valid reason for concern whenever a starter is injured.
Even though our starter was originally a walk-on who had to earn a scholarship, our back-up kicker was recruited out of high school, so we must have seen something in him that made us believe he could play.
Now he has the chance to prove it.

Over my almost 96 years on this earth, I finally learned something. Most of my worries were a total waste. Just when I was beginning to believe I had learned to worry successfully, I learned it was all in vain. The seventh touchdown will erase those first six missed extra point attempts.

Contrary to reality, ESPiN has blanketed the nation with doubt about what Clemson loses Clemson can not replace. That's been going on for half a decade now. Even Clemson Fans have come to believe that if we lose a player all hope goes too.
